I think everyone is having a hard time getting in, just because there are so
many people trying at the same time. When most of the footprint is outside
the CUSA and the repeater is not busy, I can get in easily with just a 19"
ground plane (here in south Florida, there are often passes where Floridians
are in but otherwise the footprint is mostly over water).

Double check that you have the correct new uplink frequency (145.99).

Bill NZ5N

>>>I am having a problem getting into the ISS,even when its over head.
>>>I can hear the station vary loud. Last night it was almost over head and it
was 40 over, still no luck.
I am using HRD 4.1Build 2019 to run the TS-2000.
I have checked the tone and it should be set for 67hz. and turned on.
It is almost like the tone isnt there.
Will the uplink antenna make that much of a differance? I am using an old
style KLM 143-150-14C without the switch wired up so I cant change it.
The other question I have is...is it better to cant the antennas at a 45*
angle rather than being 90* to ground(looking more like an"X" than "+") ?
I would sure like to get in one time before the mode changes again.
Great web site.
Thanks everyone for the help the last couple of weeks. It make this new mode
a lot more fun.

Hmm, I found all my S band gear, so I should give this mode a
whirl. Looks like it could be interesting. :)

I made an interesting recording of the S band transmitter last pass with
WinRad and my SDR-IQ. The signal peaks about 45 db above the noise! This is
with a 3 ft dish with a patch feed, preamp at the feed, and keps.it
downconverter to a hamtronics converter to the -IQ.

I'll make the recording available to anyone who'd like it, and the software
to play it is available for free at http://www.winrad.org/ . The catch is it
is about 530Mb. Maybe someone has a website they would put it on? Otherwise
if you want it, send me a SASE and blank CD or DVD and I'll make a copy for
you.

I had a problem hearing the pass. I see I made it into the bird. I used a
grid parabolic 23.5 x 39.25 x 15 inches with a keps.it downconvertor/preamp.
I could hear some stations fading in and out, but just wasn't strong enough
to hear them all or myself.

That antenna seemed to work well for AO-40, but seemed light on this try.
Next good pass, switching to a 17 turn Directive System circular
polarization antenna. Seeing if my receive will be better for AO-51

Any opinions on the grid vs. cp?

Put the downconverter RIGHT at the antenna feedpoint. Any coax between the
dish feed and the downconverter or preamp is usually disastrous.

Good Luck!

I tried again just now on the (fairly high) pass over the UK and EU.
Heard a couple of EA and SM stations on, but I couldn't open the
repeater myself.

I had my Kenwood TH-F7E handheld with the cross-band Yagi, and a
Jingtong JT-308 with its own rubber duck listening for the downlink.
The Jingtong was picking up a huge signal from the ISS - very very good
reception indeed. I just couldn't seem to get the repeater to open for
me at all though. Any suggestions? I know the TH-F7E and antenna work
well for LEO satellites, so I figured it would work for the ISS.

I clipped out 20 seconds of the SDR recording and it zips down to less than
5Mb. If anyone wants a copy emailed to them let me know. Just remember
you'll need WinRad or maybe some other SDR program to listen/watch it.
WinRad is free and can be downloaded online.

Yep. I checked the aerial, and can lift a nearby (25 miles or so)
repeater with 500mW (power set to L). So presumably the 2m antenna and
2m half of the diplexer are healthy.

I have 133 satellite contacts made through RS-12 when I lived in
Hawaii. I was logging then on a program that is no longer published.
A friend helped me convert the old log format to Cabrillo (one of two
acceptable input formats for Logbook of the World). However, there is
some additional data needed for each contact to show satellite mode
and satellite name. I can find how to add that info in ADIF (the
other format accepted by LoTW) but not in Cabrillo.

Here's what a line of Cabrillo input looks like; the data is column-
position-sensitive:

QSO: 21000 CW 1994-03-20 0109 N6VI/KH6 599 31 W2HG 599 00

Do you have any idea how to modify a line of contact data in Cabrillo
so that it is correctly shown as a satellite contact in LoTW?

Hello
This evening (0325Z) on AO-51 my old S band AO-40 (sobsob) still works!! No
one else was on, only the west coast was available. The biggest challange is
tracking the fast moving AO-51 with a 3 foot primestar dish with out auto
tracking (next project).

Hi Gordon,

I had a chance to talk to Mike from the ISS on Saturday for 7-8
minutes.
I was the only station at the time (3 AM..) During the pass I tried
to adjust to minimum power
and my pre-amp on and off. My feeling is that 5 W is not enough to
keep the ISS squelch open.
The pre-amp made a difference on low elevation. I used 25W, 120 FT
LMR 400 coax, 4 element Yagi on 48ft tower,
automatic AZ/ EL and automatic doppler with SatPC32.

An interesting thought...could they have the squelch engaged while also
requiring tone? I personally haven't been able to get in on 80 degree passes
over New England with 25 watts and an omni at 5:30 AM local time.

Reception is just fine, but there are a lot of "empty" spaces in between
contacts that could be collisions I guess...

Drew,

Worked N5UXT this AM, and even with the heavy rains here, good signal as
always. It was ONLY S9+20 with a 30" dish. Definitely a HiFi mode, and one
where you can have an honest QSO!
