The 847 does not allow dual in band operation. If you think about it you
would need very respectable filtering more than 100db isolation between
the transmitter and receiver to be able to pull this off. In effect you
are asking it to be a repeater. It can do this only when transmit and
receive frequencies are not on the same band because then it only has to
deal with the much smaller 3rd harmonic signal.

Floyd,
Makes perfect sense. I wonder why, when ISS is selected,
SatPC32 does not
configure the radio to a single VFO with a non-standard
repeater offset,
rather than loading 2M into both VFOs in satellite mode.
Should I have taken it out of Satellite mode manually?
Something to research.

Bill,
For the ISS, use the SatPC32ISS application instead of the main
SatPC32. That will appropriately control your radio for the ISS.

Your SatPC32 installation should include a program called SatPC32ISS, a
special version designed for same-band operation. Your radio should not be
in satellite mode.

I am not familiar with SATPC32, so I cannot answer that.
I think I recall discussions in the archives about using a non stantdard
split not in SAT mode on the 847, but you can search the archives to
confirm. We actually used an icom 821h with a 5 element beam for
terrestrial qso's (without elevation) to make our two or three ISS
contacts (different users and callsigns). Since those contacts do not
qualify for sat contacts we actually ended up failing to get the FD sat
contacts since everyone was so wound up with the ISS contacts.
Oh well, something to fix for next year....

Thanks to everyone who called W1AW/9 - IL and helped make the week a success
for us here in Illinois.
QSO's were made via AO-7, FO-29, SO-50, VO-52, and the ISS packet repeater.
So far I have logged only 2 QSO's on the ISS packet repeater (an exchange
where the packet is clearly directed to my call and confirmed). Stations
worked via ISS were KA1OLE and KO0A. If you feel you made a valid 2-way
contact with W1AW/9 via ISS packet, but are not listed here, send me your
capture file in the next couple days. I will compare it to mine and make
any corrections needed.
There are still a few more passes available this afternoon.so hope to see
you on the birds!

Nitin,
When stacking antennas for different frequencies and you wish to
estimate the effect of, say, a 2m antenna on a 70cm antenna, you should
consider the capture area of the 2m antenna at 70cm, *not* at 2m.
Despite the physical size, the capture area is very small. That means
you can put the antennas much closer together than many people think.
WA5VJB did some measurements for 900MHz and another band which
illustrated this, and presented the results in a lecture to the UK
Microwave Group some years ago. He found he could put the antennas
almost touching with little effect on the radiation pattern. I did some
Eznec simulations for 2m and 70cm crossed yagi antennas spaced
horizontally at distances from 2.0m down to 0.8m which gave similar
answers. I have the pictures in a powerpoint file which I've emailed to
you directly as I don't know if this list supports attachments.
I built the antennas but then moved house before I could put them up. I
still haven't got there!

I just want to clarify that the decision was made and posted here that we
are not taking part in the 13 Colonies special event this year due to lack
of state stations. We could only muster up just over half the states and
felt that it would be better to have all or nothing this year.

Hi!
Did anyone in the central or eastern parts of the USA record the NA1SS
passes on Saturday afternoon? I have my recordings which I used for
my slideshow videos I posted on YouTube, but they do not cover the
other contacts that took place as the ISS moved away from me during
each pass. I am interested in trying to piece together a longer recording,
possibly covering the time the ISS was passing over North America
during each pass. I did this many years ago for an ISS pass over North
America, piecing together a couple of recordings covering a pass down
the Pacific coastline of the USA and Mexico, and would like to try to do
that again for the Field Day passes.
If you have any recordings, please e-mail them directly to me. If the
recordings are too large for e-mail, please contact me so we can make
arrangements to transfer the files in some other manner.
Thanks in advance, and 73!

Hi All,
The QB50 precursor satellites, launched on 19th of June 2014, are in good
health and still being commissioned. These satellites are part of a
risk-reduction program for the QB50 main mission.
Read all about QB50 on the project website at https://qb50.eu/
These satellites are also carrying amateur radio transponders:
- QB50p1 carries the FUNcube-3 transponder system by AMSAT-UK and AMSAT-NL
- QB50p2 carries an FM transponder by AMSAT-Francophone
I am grateful to be able to announce that these two CubeSat Satellites have
been awarded OSCAR numbers by AMSAT-NA: QB50p1 shall be known as European
OSCAR 79 or EO-79, and QB50p2 shall be known as European OSCAR 80 or EO-80.
Thank you AMSAT-NA!
The transponders are expected to be switched on after the main mission,
which lasts about 6 months depending on progress made.
Details about sending in reports and decoding the beacons can be found on
the ISIS Ham page at
http://isispace.nl/HAM/qb50p.html
Mike DK3WN has kindly made and published a decoder at his website:
http://www.dk3wn.info/software.shtml based on the published formats.
Thanks all for your support and reports, they are much appreciated!

Hi,
Congratulations to all concerned with the projects and welcome to the
growing list of success stories in our world of "amateur radio".
The signals from both satellites are being heard at my QTH hear in South

I must download the software that Mike has so kindly once again put time

Thanks again.

Hi All,
I know that this subject is a very ?old chestnut? but I came across this
website earlier today http://spaceflightservices.com/
You can see, perhaps for the first time?, a list of opportunities and
pricing structures.
I have been pondering :
Whether a 3U CubeSat to GTO could be funded by the community
Whether it would have enough power for attitude control and a sufficiently
powerful transponder
Whether it could have deployable antennas as well as solar panels? Combined?
and, of course, lots more questions come to mind.
This could make the subject of an interesting debate/discussion at the
upcoming AMSAT-UK Colloquium at the end of the month?
I am looking forward to it already!
