Hello,
I?m hoping to be writing an article about FD and the activity on the Amateur
Satellites. It would be helpful, to the story, if the stations operating
provided me with the call sign you will be using along with your operating
class and ARRL section. I will be on all the available satellites using the
call W2GSB, 5A, NLI and W2TOB for the GOTA contacts.
Good Luck, Have Fun and talk up AMSAT, thank you.

All,
Using detailed doppler measurements I find that QB50p1 is object 40025,
2014-033R, and QB50p2 is object 40032, 2014-033Y.

I have been asked by ICOM to webcast field day this year. We have scheduled
3 locations that will be webcast.
1. Memphis, 2. Olive Branch field day, and 3. Northeast Mississippi gang in
Fulton, Ms.
My schedule would be Memphis on Saturday morning, Olive branch on Sunday
morning, and Fulton, MS on Sunday afternoon.
Because of travel times, I will probably have only a couple hours at each of
the MS locations but should have much more time for Memphis.
I need your help. Can you find me someone that can speak about field day at
Memphis and that person will be interviewed. Also are there specific
stations in the Memphis field day you want to show more or highlight?
Rick and Damon will you be there and are you planning to work any satellite?
I think that would also be good content that people will be interested in.
Thanks, Tom W5KUB

The Chesapeake Amateur Radio Club will be operating 2A.
K4AMG Club will provide GOTA operations and SATCOM. (AO 7, FO 29, and VO
52) We will avoid SO 50 in favor of those that can only operate FM.

W1AW/9 operations (from IL) are underway. Contacts were made today via
SO-50, FO-29, VO-52 , AO-7 and the ISS packet repeater.
Tomorrow (Thursday 6/26) I anticipate being on during the morning satellite
passes, starting about 11:15 UTC. If SO-50 is on during that pass I will
attempt to operate there. (If transponder is quiet, I will switch to
VO-52). Immediately following I plan to be on the FO-29 eastern US pass.
Then I should be on VO-52 and FO-29 during the following passes (western US)
later in the morning.
In the afternoon I anticipate being on AO-7 and again on VO-52 and FO-29 in
the late afternoon/evening.
I will be available for most ISS passes for keyboard QSO's. I will be
sending CQ de W1AW/9. In order to have a valid QSO, I need to be sure a
human is at the other keyboard, responding to me. I cannot verify QSO's
consisting of only APRS information, or automated Signals Heard reports. If
you are using UISS put my call in the TX APRS box with a greeting message
and I will confirm. I have logged only one ISS contact so far, with KA1OLE.
I'm looking for more!
Feel free to call for repeat QSO's on the same or different satellites. The
more contacts the better! I'm mainly operating phone, but can switch to CW
as needed. If anyone would like to schedule a contact for a specific pass
let me know and I may be able to accommodate.

W1AW/9 - IL

I've just rebuilt my sat station and was planning to be on for Field Day
to give out some contacts from home.
What birds are folks planning to use? I assume SO-50 and FO-29. Any others?

Jim,
SO-50 will be a zoo, of course, but will be available for 1 QSO only!
FO-29 is a fine satellite and I'm sure much of it's 100 kHz passband
will be teeming with signals.
VO-52 is also a fine satellite and it's 60 kHz passband will also be
teeming with signals.
AO-73 should be available for the weekend if the command stations
switch it to full time transponder mode on Friday. They usually post
to the BB after the command is sent. If it's not set to full time
transponder mode, the transponder will be active when the satellite is
eclipsed, but at this time of the year, it's not eclipsed very often.
There are two things to keep in mind: a narrow passband of just 20 kHz
and it's frequency instability which means that your uplink signal
usually has to be 6.5+ kHz higher than it should be for a given
downlink frequency. Even on a normal Saturday afternoon, there are
usually plenty of hams who are "lost" on the passband.
AO-7 has been a little tricky lately. On ascending passes in the
afternoon, high power signals have been causing the satellite to mode
jump to Mode A or Mode D (transponders off) as the angle of the sun on
it's solar panels is not ideal at this point in the year. As most seem
to run way too much power on Field Day, don't expect AO-7 Mode B to be
of much use, at least not on the afternoon passes. Descending passes
in the morning might turn out better. If you have Mode A gear, be
ready for it to switch or to come up in Mode A and give that a shot.
LO-78 (LituanicaSAT-1)'s FM transponder has not been activated in a
few weeks. There is no indication when they will turn it on again.
Maybe it will be on, maybe not.
The ISS packet digipeater is also an option, unless the astronauts are
using the radio used for the digipeater to make voice contacts.
73,
Paul, N8HM

Unrelated, but it would be great if someone with a good satcom station
recorded the passband of FO29. Not so much to get individual QSO's but to
grasp what a full wideband transponder can carry.
IE, tune the passband from one end to the other at a constant rate.
Then again, and again, and again at the same rate. Maybe separate files
for each scan so we can tell when a complete scan begins and ends.
This would give those who are unfamiliar with wideband linear transponder
operation what the capability really is under FD loading...
Just a thought.

I've recorded and posted SDR recordings and screenshots before. Might be
more accessible for folks as a simple youtube video tuning from one end to
another....of course, most of the time everyone is piled up in the middle
20khz.

Or use a FC dongle or other SDR software to record an IQ file for the
transponder.
You could see all the stations in the passband, then play again and listen
to each one in turn.

I plan to use VO-52 because the downlink signals are much stronger than
FO-29. FO-29 is my plan B. (Only planning to make one or two contacts
for the bonus points. After that, it's all show for visitors.)
Incidentally, with help from this group, I was able to get the DVB
dongle(RX)/TS2K(TX)/SatPC32/HDSDR combination to work great. It's really
neat to see the whole transponder passband. In fact, you can see the
noise floor come up when the satellite is in view. My antennas are
small, steerable yagis for the 'wow' factor - but I know you can use
omni's with preamps.
73's and good luck
