FYI, I will try to be on the transponder during this evening's 2314z pass.
It's an 80 degree pass here in NJ. I'll be handheld using my VX-5R and
homebrew dual yagi and homebrew diplexer. I hope some others (beside Paul!
;-) ) will join me.

Hi Kelley,

If you are able to copy stations on the 145.825 MHz downlink you have
your packet setup working. If you add "more antenna" you'll find you
can copy a pass starting sooner and lasting longer. Otherwise, if you
hear with the vertical antenna it is working OK.

I use the USA 144.390 MHz APRS beacon frequency for testing my packet
receive setups. I'm near Chicago so there is always an APRS
brap-brap-brappity-brap around. In rural areas you may need to wait a
while. But, if your packet setup works on terrestrial signals it is
ready for the ISS. You can do testing without waiting for an ISS pass
if you use 144.390. Then tune back up 145.825 and it should be ready.

But (there is always a but) ...

1. Getting on the list and/or map at www.ariss.net depends on the
downlink also being heard by an earth station setup to SATGATE its
received packets. There seem to be fewer SATGATE stations around than
in years previously. You don't have to do anything special to get
SATGATE'd. Your UNPROTO CQ VIA ARISS (CQ VIA RS0ISS works also) is all
you need to do. But there has to be a SATGATE station in range.

2. ARISS has a weaker signal than before. It is still a good signal
but in the past their higher power used to make the packet bursts able
to be copied on an HT and rubber duck. Nowadays an external antenna is
necessary (which you have). The ARISS downlink signal experiences
shadowing from the ISS structure. Sometimes this contributes to the
weaker downlink which means fewer stations hearing you ... or,
SATGATES hearing you.

3. Setting PASSALL to ON helps you copy packets that don't complete
the checksum. Many times there is enough information in there for
human eyes to pick out. Still, the SATGATES will need to receive the
entire packet with checksum to relay you. This is just another
technique for troubleshooting. PASSALL is available on the hardware
TNC configurations but I haven't found a soundcard packet program
which supports it.

4. PCSAT NO-44 can digipeat on 145.825 if it has a good charge from
its solar panels. Set your unproto to CQ VIA W3ADO-1. The signal from
NO-44 is definitely weaker than the ISS. It often shuts down after a
few packets because of power issues. On a good day it is another
satellite to add to your list. The packet log and map for NO-44 is at
http://www.findu.com/cgi-bin/pcsat.cgi The same lack of SATGATE
stations issue also applies here. Sometimes it may be a couple of days
until someone makes it through and on rare passes several stations are
successful.

Hi all,

I've been trying to work stations on ARISS as it goes over the USA,
and
don't seem to be getting anywhere. I hear the ARISS exactly when my
tracking software says I should. I switch to converse mode and send a
"Hi". I see a number of stations sending packets, I attempt to contact

them without results.

I used K9JKM's PDF to help set things up (very helpful). My unproto is

CQ VIA ARISS. I looked at the bottom of www.ariss.net to see if the
ARISS was hearing me, I didn't see my call, nor did I see the other
calls I heard. Perhaps it takes a while to appear.

Is there another way to see if things are setup okay on my end?

I'm using Winpack on Windows 7 to a MFJ-1278T to a IC-706MKIIG
connected
to a vertical antenna mounted at 50' (working on a better antenna,
hope
to have it up soon).

Hi JoAnne,

I am able to copy stations on 145.825. I am also able to do APRS on
144.390 (and the aprs.fi website shows my station as being active).

1. I now recall a series of posts not to long ago that talked about this
very issue of SATGATE's. The only reason I wanted to see a posting of my
callsign somewhere was to see that it was indeed working. I think I'll
change my unproto to RS0ISS, seems most of the stations I hear have it
set that way.

3. I do have my TNC set to PASSALL. I do see a fair amount of packet
activity. I'm just not getting anything in the way of a response. I'll
just keep at it and see what happens.

During the pass, I issue a "converse" command and send something like
"Hi from Kelley EN25". If I see another station I send something like
"Hi W0ABC this is Kelley W0RK". Is this the right format? I assume that
trying to connect to another station isn't the right way?

Thanks for the very informative response JoAnne. Perhaps I'll see you on
the bird.

Kelley,

One of the other problems is all the unattended beacons that are firing
away every 30 seconds which make it extremely difficult for people that are
at the radio trying to make actual contacts.

Thanks to all for the info on fixing these. I do have both operating
again like new. It was a matter of cycling the power a few times to get
the relays working again, and of course hooking the service monitor up
the right way through them.

The 1990 KLM Yagi's are also working as well as ever. We have made a
handful of contacts through FO-29 and can hear the transponder noise as
it pops over the horizion as well as we ever could. I measured just
under 2dB of sun noise on UHF. Again as good as when new.

Are there any 9600 bps FM/GMSK downlinks working I can use to test the
full digital receive chain? I'm not finding any on the various status
pages.

Jim

I agree and those that try working DX via the VHF band.

I have said it before and I'll say it again. Look up some of the calls
you copy
and you will see the reason very fast.

Yeah, it sounds like the radio/TNC/Computer end is running. Hopefully
some of my comments would prove useful to others thinking of trying
ARISS packet.

> "converse" command and send something like

Yes, this will send the UI packet from you with the quoted text.

> If I see another station I send something like
> "Hi W0ABC this is Kelley W0RK". Is this the right format?

Again, yes this is the right format. If W0ABC copies the downlink they
will see your message.

> I assume that trying to connect to another station isn't
> the right way?

Technically it should work but is not recommended. This is because
your station and the other station will kick into the full AX.25
handshake protocol. If one of the handshake sequences is missed AX.25
will faithfully try, retry, retry, retry to complete the handshake
message. It is likely the pass will be over before the handshake
sequence is completed and you will have not received the text of the
message. The retry'ed handshake messages add as much competition to a
UI channel as do the unattended beacons others mentioned this morning.

I've thought I should make myself a SATGATE because there are so few
active at present. I tend to leave my station off and disconnected
when I'm not operating. I will likely not make my station operate
unattended due to stretches of being away from the radio doing things
like the Journal or news bulletins.

But when you see packets from me I really am at the keyboard. I'll
look for you on upcoming passes.

Or I will just blame senior moment- what is a "easy" way to keep some of
these newer birds organized and have them all in the standard list on
satpc32. So all the birds are listed on the same list. There have been
several Litxxxxxx birds I have got mixed up. Trying to keep up with the
program. Station is peaked top perfection, antennas tracking etc. Just
trying work out these minor PITA bugs. Your collective wisdom is invaluable

Hi All,

I just installed (upgraded) to SatPC32 v. 12.8c.

Now, I have two installations here. One on my new laptop, and one on my
desktop PC. Laptop is for portable work, of course.
I noticed that on my laptop installation, on the SETUP menu OPTIONS
dialog, there is a checkbox for GROUND TRACK.
This option does not exist on my desktop installation. Same program,
same settings otherwise...

I see these parameters are held in SATSTART.SQF. I see + as the last
entry (and it is one more entry than my desktop file has) which
corresponds with the GROUND TRACK checkbox.
If I edit SATSTART.SQF on my desktop PC and add that +, when it starts
it does not have GROUND TRACK turned on. So I can't fool it.

Any thoughts, suggestions, help?

Thanks!

I will say that the fact that the actuality of the 5KHz lower than published
frequency (Known for years) is the reason that often times you here a newby
on the bird, throwing out his call, getting responded to but never answering
back. I had a good QSO on HF a bit back, mentioned "I do AMSAT" and he said
something to the effect, "I tried listening and calling but never heard
anything". I told him about the "Actual vs. published" frequencies. He
says "Well that probably explains it then". Even K6LCS's great pages at
http://www.work-sat.com/Sat_Skeds.html do not refer to the offset. I am
convinced that this disparity is the cause for at least some of the QRM on
that bird, not all but some.

Hi Koss and Paul,
I do not think that the "normal" center frequency is 436.795 MHz.

I use two frequencies for the downlink in SatPC32:

436.791 and 436.788 MHz.

I have heard it suddenly jump about 5 kHz during a pass - but that is some
time ago.

The two frequencies above are not always spot on but close enough.

Have a nice weekend all.

Thanks to all for the many QSOs on several passes of SO-50, AO-73,
AO-7, and FO-29 from the DC Mini Maker Faire at Yards Park (named for
the nearby Washington Navy Yard, which used to also occupy the area
that is now a park) on the Anacostia River waterfront in Washington,
DC. I got quite sunburned and will not be updating my log tonight, so
I'm not 100% sure how many QSOs were made. Despite some technical
problems on my end (didn't remember I had to turn my demo speaker on
to charge it's battery), we were able to demonstrate ham radio and
amateur satellites to many people. Being a Maker Faire, this was not
your normal hamfest crowd, and there was a good crowd of especially
younger people, who already possess some interest in electronics and
technical projects. Some have licenses but haven't done anything with
them, others have had licenses but have not been active in a while,
and still others indicated that they were thinking about getting their
license. Hopefully some will follow through with it and hopefully some
will get involved in amateur satellites and join AMSAT!

If there are any Maker Faires in your area, consider setting up
amateur radio and AMSAT exhibits. It is a good way to make
demonstrations to a different, but potentially interested crowd. After
all, the 2014 AMSAT apparel is branded "AMSAT: The Satellite Makers."

Thanks to Lee Ciereszko, N4TCW, for deciding to setup an amateur radio
exhibit at the outdoor faire (a last minute decision he made on
Thursday). He brought a TS-2000 (which we could have used for
satellites, but I used my normal 2 FT-817 setup), a solar panel,
batteries, and HF/VHF/UHF antennas. We also made a few HF QSOs during
the day.

By the way, the 436.795 MHz birdie on the TS-2000 is so strong, I had
to turn that radio off while working SO-50, despite being a good 10-15
feet away from it.

02:20z pass sounded like SO-50! Heard KO6TZ and a few others, and I
think I worked NU6O / CN70 - the satellite crossed through North right
at the time of the QSO and the rotor decided it had to spin around, so I
lost his reply.

Nice satellite!

During the 0350Z pass, it appears that batteries discharged and LO-78 has
reverted to CW FM. Telemetry indicates battery voltage of 6.9 Volts, and I
believe it needs to recharge to 7.4 before the transponder is active.

Subject: [amsat-bb] Show Low AZ hamfest & DM54/DM55 activity on
Saturday

Hi!

Saturday was a busy day. Starting with the White Mountain Hamfest
in Show Low, Arizona, just after 0500 local time (1200 UTC), to working
several passes from along I-40 and old US-66 at the DM54/DM55 grid
boundary in the afternoon, to the driving up to the hamfest Friday
evening and back home Saturday evening, it was another fun trip.

The Kachina Amateur Radio Club has held its White Mountain Hamfest
for many years in early June in Show Low, and this club has graciously
provided AMSAT space at the hamfest. I had my table, complete with
AMSAT banner and merchandise, ready for the official start of the hamfest
at 0700 local time. I also had my station ready to go for an FO-29 pass
an hour earlier, which was a demonstration for a few people who were
already wandering around the hamfest site (parking lot for Show Low
City Hall). I worked passes on FO-29, VO-52, AO-73, and SO-50
during the morning from here, and many thanks to the operators across
North America for calling WD9EWK and being a part of the on-air
demonstrations. It didn't hurt that the hamfest is in a grid locator not
heard often on the satellites, DM44.

The hamfest was wrapping up by noon, and I took advantage of that to
get lunch before making an hour-long drive northeast from Show Low to
a point along old US-66 and the I-40 freeway that straddles 35 degrees
North latitude - the line between grids DM54 and DM55, two more grid
locators rarely heard on the satellites. This spot is about 50 miles/80km
west of the New Mexico state line, not far from the town of Holbrook
and the Petrified Forest National Park. I have been to this spot in the past,
a parking lot for a (now) former souvenir shop east of a freeway exit.
After setting up my gear and taking the obligatory (for VUCC purposes)
photos of my station with a GPS receiver, I also took pictures of some
wandering visitors - cattle - around the property. Then it was off to working
passes on AO-7, FO-29, VO-52, and LO-78 (it was still LituanicaSAT-1
when I was up there). I also took advantage of an ISS pass to use my
TH-D72A HT to show my location via APRS - something I did as part of
the demonstrations at Dayton a few weeks ago. Even on the high
desert at almost 5300 feet/1615m elevation, it was still warm in the
afternoon (around 96F/36C at one point).

Once I wrapped up the DM54/DM55 operating, I packed my gear, drove
west on I-40 to find some dinner, and make the 4-hour drive from up there
back home. Not much to see at night driving through a couple of national
forests, other than some elk near the road - and one crossing in front of
me. Almost 500 miles/800km in about 29 hours, and going from the 96F
heat at DM54/DM55 to around 50F/10C in the forest on the drive home.

For anyone who worked WD9EWK on Saturday and would like to receive
a QSL card, please e-mail me directly with the QSO details. If you are in
the log, I will gladly send you a card. No SASE needed. Other than the
QSOs on LO-78/LituanicaSAT-1, I have uploaded yesterday's QSOs to
Logbook of the World. The LO-78 QSOs should be uploaded shortly,
now that ARRL can enable this satellite in LOTW using LO-78 instead
of LituanicaSAT-1.

73!
