You can certainly look at the sun terminator line on the map. If the entire
visibility circle of the satellite on the earth is on the dark side
of the terminator, the satellite is in eclipse. But I also remember
seeing a little legend somewhere on the screen that says "Satellite is in
eclipse" or something like that when it is.

Here is something for those who enjoy the roar of a rocket engine in
the evening ...
http://arianespace.tv/ says they will webcast the Arianespace Flight
Vega VV03 -KasEOSat-1 Launch set for Tuesday, April 29 2014 from
Kourou.
Lift-off of the Vega launcher is now set for Tuesday, April 29 2014,
at exactly:
10:35:15 pm local time on Tuesday, April 29, 2014
09:35:15 pm in Washington, D.C.
01:35:15 am UTC on Wednesday, April 30, 2014

Paul,
Thank you for such a detailed response, for a newbie like me (only 63 years
old) this is all very interesting - and logical.
As you quite rightly say, this satellite should be treasured due to its
footprint???..
Thanks again

Absolutely!
The recommendation at the time of launch was to limit power output to no
more than 100W ERP (which is about 25 watts to a small antenna like an Elk
or an Arrow). This is even more critical now since the solar panels are
almost certainly not supplying enough power to drive the transmitter to it's
full power output. At certain times of the year, there are poor solar angles
on the panels too, which reduces power availability. Remember too that AO-7
will enter a period where it eclipses on every orbit over the south pole
within the next week or so. That period will last for about 9 weeks. It
should be in Mode B every day as a result, but from what I've read about
past eclipse cycles, it can act a bit odd during that time.
On too many passes, I hear distorted audio and reflections throughout the
transponder from it being hit too hard with SSB and especially CW. CW, being
full power at key down, unlike SSB, is even harder on a linear transponder.
If everyone would just have the courtesy to keep their uplink power to a
reasonable level, AO-7 can be a very enjoyable satellite with a large
footprint providing the best DX opportunities currently available.
Unfortunately, this problem is not new as a glance at the AMSAT Newsletters
from 1974-1981 shows.
I recommend the following reading: The Editorial + Letter from W4NUL/5 in
the March 1976 AMSAT Newsletter, the AMSAT-OSCAR-7 QRP Test Telemetry Report
in the November 1976 AMSAT Newsletter, and the June 1976 QRP Test Results
from the December 1976 AMSAT Newsletter. All available here:
http://www.ka9q.net/AMSAT-Newsletter-1976.pdf
Please calculate your ERP ( http://www.csgnetwork.com/antennaecalc.html )
and keep it to no more than 100W.

Good morning,
According to the latest update from the LituanicaSAT-1 team posted on the
AMSAT-UK website this morning (
http://amsat-uk.org/2014/04/30/lituanicasat-1-fm-transponder-active-may-1/),
the LituanicaSAT-1 FM transponder will be active from 0930Z-1400Z tomorrow.
That window includes three passes over North America at around 0940Z,
1115Z, and 1245Z (if I've got the TLEs right - Object 39569, I believe)
The uplink is 145.950 MHz, PL 67.0 Hz and downlink is 435.180 MHz.

I think you may have your times off Paul... I show passes over North America
for May 1st at 0940 and 1115 EASTERN time (EDST). =^(? Which only makes
sense, because the 0930Z-1400Z operating period would need to coincide with
passes over EU for people to be working LY5N.
Otherwise, I'd be outside waving my yagi around looking for you. =^D

Using GoSatWatch from Indiana, I agree with Kevin's pass times. However,
the 0940 EDT pass (1340 Z) is only 3 degrees. :-(
While the 1113 EDT pass (1513 Z) is a respectable 44 degrees elevation, it
is outside of the announced operating times for the FM transponder (0930Z -
1400Z).

Thanks, Steve and Kevin.
Yes, I forgot that the tracking program I was using was set to local
time, not UTC. The only pass over North America where the transponder
will be around 1340Z (0940 EDT) pass, which will only be good for the
southeastern United States.
My mistake! Hopefully there will be better opportunities for North
America in the future. The satellite should last another 2 months +/-
