Just tried a FO-29 pass for the first time in months. I don't get down here
to operate at my main station much anymore. I put myself right around
435.850, a clear freq and proceeded to try and make a few contacts. Well,
after one contact all of a sudden there were 3 or 4 stations calling CQ on
850, right on top of the station I was trying to work. I don't get it, there
is plenty of bandwidth why do people call right in the middle of someone
trying to make a contact. I gave up, unbelievable...

I doubt it was intentional. They probably just can't hear the satellite.
Just have to spin the dial when that happens.

Jeff,
As N8HM said, some aren't hearing that you are already on
that frequency. For others, the software controlling the
radio(s) put them on the center of the transponder, and
the operator doesn't bother to tune around and change that
frequency.
If you start out 10 or 15 kHz above the center frequency
when working SSB, or a similar distance below the center
frequency if you are working CW, you'll avoid the hassle
of fighting all the stations trying to occupy the center
of the transponder simultaneously. Other than the 20 kHz
transponder on AO-73 at night, there's more than enough
room to move off the center frequency and help spread out
the activity.
And if you are on over the next few days and hear W1AW/7
on, please give us a call. Either John K8YSE/7 or I will
be on the mic. Glad to see you're getting back on FO-29...
73!

Paul,
Thank you for your reply - I think I have solved the problem
I use SatPC32 to control my rig and I have calibrated it to be fairly close
for receiving my own transmission early in the pass.
HOWEVER - today, I had to tune 6.5Khz higher than I normally do to hear my
own signal ! Once I found my own signal everything was back to normal
I know there are other people having the same issue, so I wonder what has
happened to the satellite?
Thanks to everyone who has replied.

Hi Jeff,
Don't let a few rotten apples spoil the basket. What you encountered is
common on FO-29 even with its generous passband.
As a general guideline I recommend portable and demo stations transmit
outside 145.930-960 to play it safe.

Thanks for reply.
Understood - I only did the one calibration when Funcube was launched. I am
aware that the satellite drifts, but I used to start -1.5Khz below the
calibration point, then move up in frequency.
My point is that I had to start the QSO +6.6Khz - seems a big difference.
Again, thanks for reply

Peter,
I suggest not calibrating SatPC32 every pass of AO-73 but instead utilize
the plus and minus +/- keys on your keyboard to tweak your uplink as
required. AO-73 tends to move a little bit.

I would have told you when I wrote but didn't have the IPad. First one is
"HamsatHD" a little harder to handle but for me the best one is
"GoSatWatch". This one is a dream to operate it appears to update when you
turn it on. I keep it on and near so I can see what's going on. Both of
these are powerful programs. I just use what I want from them. There is a
lot more I'm sure to them so explore.

REF reports there have been alterations to the French license conditions
regarding the Amateur-satellite service. They have also raised the issue of
1260-1300 MHz with their regulator the ARCEP.

I copied the following information from the controllers of AO-73
(Funcube-1) in the Fitter messages on the last past of the satellite.
"On 22 Mar 2014 at approx. 0930 UTC we are planning to switch to amateur
mode (transponder with lo pwr beacon) for at least one whole orbit. The aim
of the switch on 22 Mar is to check the effect on the satellite of
continuous amateur mode, especially battery temp"

Hello to all!
CX1TH, Juan Miguel is looking for North American stations on AO-7 mode B.
He is in GF25vi (GF25 was activated by Yuri, UT1FG/mm) but that contact
doesn't count as DXCC country.
Juan Miguel is able to work satellites down the horizon; I already worked
him on FO-29.
His email address is listed in qrz.com

Copied same here.. Noticed that the battery temp was -2 C. Supposedly the
battery chemistry gets wonky at zero and below.
