I don't know what I am doing wrong but so far I have failed to hear FUNCUBE
let alone decode.
I seem to have the correct keps as I see station near me uploading.
Am using a radio not a dongle 145.935MHz USB mode is what I am using as
settings. Is that correct or have I made a mistake

Subject: From HDARC website

Hi Larry,

I am helping the University of Florida with their pico-satellite
(SwampSat) which launched this week from Nasa Wallops. Would you mind
forwarding the request below to any of the HDARC members who work
satellites? We are trying to find ourselves in orbit and verify the
satellite is alive on the 70 cm band. Once I stop sweating this I will
get back to another HDARC meeting.

Thank you,
Shawn Allgeier

Steve, I don't know if I can help. I am using a Kenwood TS 2000 X with an
interface to go between the audio output in the back of the rig to the
input of my HP laptop. I just have an M squared eggbeater without any
pre-amp for receive.

My tracking software is SatPC32 to correct for the doppler effect. I only
touched up the downlink a couple of times on each of the two passes I
recorded and uplinked to the warehouse (147 frames).

I Load SatPC32, have it running, Load the dashboard software and choose to
capture from the soundcard. The audio output of the RASCAL interface goes
into the input to my sound card. I have the volume up at about 75%. Before
the bird comes over the horizon, I see a wave on the Dashboard software
that is the result of the noise coming from the receiver. I can actually
hear the bird about 20-40 seconds before it comes over the horizon (very
faint but hear the distinct tone). The real time screen starts filling with
data as I see on the right bottom counting of the type of data received,
the serial number, and to the right, the packets decoded and missed, plus
the number of packets already sent to the warehouse and the number waiting
to be sent.

Don't know if that helps at all.

Having taught Earth Science and Astronomy for 36 years, now retired, I not
only like the linear transponders, but love to collect telemetry from the
birds too. It is not available yet, but I can't wait until they allow us to
download the whole earth orbit data from the warehouse. I want to watch the
data change as the bird goes around the earth. I used to do that with UO-11
telemetry and use the data for labs using Excel's graphing functions in my
Astronomy classes with my students.

Did you try decoding the sample wave files they provide? They allow you to
experiment getting the audio to your soundcard, then to the dashboard
software.

I'm looking forward to the 03:41 Z pass for me later tonight.

Hi Rick

Am using HRD for tracking and Doppler, but for some reason I am not hearing
the Satellite at all. Have checked the Antenna but perhaps a Tri band
Co-linear antenna is not the best antenna to use.

I have an interface between the radio and soundcard that I have also tested
that, but I am not hearing the satellite let alone getting to decode, I did
perhaps think I had got confused about the frequency and radio mode.

Thanks very much for the reply though for the useful info

I seem to have the correct keps as I see station near me uploading.
Am using a radio not a dongle 145.935MHz USB mode is what I am using as
settings. Is that correct or have I made a mistake

Ok Steve. I am listening to 145.935 MHz +/- doppler in the USB mode. The
bird is using power output which is a little higher than originally planned
but still lower that normal use in the future. It has a nice strong signal
here. I would think you could hear it with a 1/4 wave whip or ground plane
antenna on a high elevation pass. My eggbeater is only 10 feet off the
ground with a large pin oak tree blocking to the south and my house
blocking to the north.

Hope you get to hear the bird. Let me know if I can help in any way.

Maybe I should try satpc32 for tracking and Doppler, you have a private
email on that subject.

Using an FT-817 for receive. Perhaps my collinear is not great for high
passes but really though I should be able to hear something, and by hear I
mean I have the speaker on the radio turned on

Thanks for taking the time to respond, it will probably be something stupid
when I figure it out (most likely the operator)

I have an interface between the radio and soundcard that I have also tested
that, but I am not hearing the satellite let alone getting to decode, I did
perhaps think I had got confused about the frequency and radio mode.

Thanks very much for the reply though for the useful info

Duh! Brain fade Steve. That pass is 2:36 UTC. Also the first things I
mentioned I watch are on the left bottom for the screen.

Before
the bird comes over the horizon, I see a wave on the Dashboard software that
is the result of the noise coming from the receiver. I can actually hear the
bird about 20-40 seconds before it comes over the horizon (very faint but
hear the distinct tone). The real time screen starts filling with data as I
see on the right bottom counting of the type of data received, the serial
number, and to the right, the packets decoded and missed, plus the number of
packets already sent to the warehouse and the number waiting to be sent.

Don't know if that helps at all.

Having taught Earth Science and Astronomy for 36 years, now retired, I not
only like the linear transponders, but love to collect telemetry from the

download the whole earth orbit data from the warehouse. I want to watch the
data change as the bird goes around the earth. I used to do that with UO-11
telemetry and use the data for labs using Excel's graphing functions in my
Astronomy classes with my students.

Did you try decoding the sample wave files they provide? They allow you to
experiment getting the audio to your soundcard, then to the dashboard
software.

This evening I plainly heard AO-73 being relayed by FO-29. I didn't have a
SDR running or even a audio recorder, because I was trying to decode it! If
my thinking was correct, one should listen to LSB on FO-29's downlink. I
could hear the periodic tone between frames (brilliant idea BTW) and could
see brief peaks right and left of center. There were several users at the
time, so perhaps someone in a more remote location will be able to decode it
in this manner.
