I have a new wooden outbuilding and am thinking of putting a rotator on
the roof.  What are the best practices for lightning protection for a
setup like this?

I'm not as worried about the equipment as I am the building catching on
fire.  There are some things inside that are very important to me.

BTW, the Yaesu G-550 is the current production of the Elevator rotator
(KR-500).

MAJORITY of Repairs to G-5500 Azimuth-Elevation rotators are with
the Elevation Rotator (G-550).

The best practice varies from region to region. Omission of a single factor
can negate any insurance claims, so the best practice is to hire the
services of a licensed electrician who would be familiar with the local
electrical code. The insurance company should be able to provide references.

Here is what I did in your same situation.
?
Make sure you have at least 3 feet of mast extending above the antenna
from the rotator.? Attach at least a #10 STRANDED copper wire to the
tower/tripod just below the rotator and route it as straight and short as
possible to the thickest and longest copper-coated ground rod you can
find directly below (as much as possible) your tower/tripod.
?
Then, KYFC because lightning will go wherever it pleases.? But, at least
you will have given it the most pleasing path you could.

The exciting news is that FUNcube-1 CubeSat is now en-route to the Yasny
launch site.

It was flown on a special flight from Rotterdam yesterday and it cleared
through Russian customs this morning.

Well before the launch date, Dashboard software, to decode and display the
telemetry, will be made available for download, this will function on any
windows pc or laptop using either a Dongle or a 2 metre SSB capable
receiver. Additionally a set of pre-launch keps will also be distributed.

This launch will carry more than ten spacecraft using the amateur satellite
service and one of them will, itself, later deploy up to nine CubeSats and
PocketCubes so there should be plenty of new signals to listen for after
this launch

your main house electrical ground

the azimuth rotor broke down to me, namely the internal ring gear, is a
very common part is the same for several models kempro, Yaesu and daiwa.

Sorry, but NFPA NEC (National Electrical Code) definitely requires that ALL
grounding electrodes MUST be connected together! ?There are VERY good
reasons for doing this.

If the antenna were to take a direct lightning strike, the charge could
definitely be carried down the shield of the coaxial cable, to the chassis
of the equipment, and then through the 3rd wire of the power cord to the
electric wiring of the house / building!

Also, for proper lightning protection, the shield of the coaxial cable needs
to be grounded to the mast near the antenna, at the bottom of the mast or
where the ground lead from the mast connects to the ground rod, and again
just before the cable enters the building.

There are various ways of getting a good lightning ground. ?One of those
ways is outlined at:

Although lightning arrestors do get the shield grounded, there are much
cheaper ways of doing this. ?I don't believe that the reflector will let me
attach a photo. ?However, I can E-Mail a photo of a method to get the shield
grounded if requested.

Yeah, this is a requirement that has vexed designers of complex electrical
systems for years.
One solution, generally meeting this requirement, is to go ahead an utilize
separate ground rods
and tie the rods together with a (large) grounding cable--usually pvc
insulated cable for corrosion
protection. In industrial installations these connections are often made so
they can be
disconnected in the event of differential currents flowing and causing
problems with
communication/signal systems.

Much like K8BL's recommendations, I too have used #10 AWG for the ground
from the rotor/mast
 to the ground rod, and hoped and prayed the lightning liked it (if ever
needed).  This is especially important
for a non-earthed installation like a tripod on a roof.  I have been
fortunate to never having to find out...

Hi Rich,

The format is 1k2 BPSK so a Dongle or 2 metre SSB receiver will be needed to
receive the signals.

The Dashboard software needed to decode and display the telemetry and Fitter
messages will be released well before the launch with, hopefully, a full set
of user notes!
