I too did not receive the latest issue of the AMSAT Journal as of yet.
Thought it might just be me, so didn't want to complain. It is something
to look forward to! Great job to Martha, Jo Anne, and everyone involved.
The authors deserve a lot of thanks as well.

Hmmm, my July/August AMSAT Journal has not arrived either (even with the
wrong name). Martha at the AMSAT Office handles circulation/mailing issues
and she is our interface with vendors and contractors like the print shop.

I've let her know that so far we're missing issues for K9JKM, K7TEJ, and
W5AOO. If others are missing please let Martha know.

This is what I received when I notified Martha that I had received my
Journal with the correct address and someone else's name.

"With new mailing regulations, our mailer had to update their
software. .The glitch was due to this change in software. We have
been assured that all current members will receive a Journal -
unfortunately with the wrong name. This will be fixed by the next
issue of the Journal."

You might want to drop a note to Martha and inform her that you did
not receive your Journal.
The problem may be larger than she knows.

It is indeed unfortunate to have the commendable efforts of the
volunteer contributors and editorial staff to the AMSAT Journal be
undone by problems at a PAID contractor.

If you have not received your 2013 September/October AMSAT Journal via
the postal mail please let the AMSAT office know via e-mail at

Hello Paul,

last week I've started my satellite activity, at the moment I've done 9
contacts on SO-50 and FO-29.
Yesterday evening I've tried to work VO-52, I was able to hear me back, but
I've only 5 watts on the uplink.

This is my station on the balcony:

http://in3aqk.blogspot.it/2013/08/first-sat-qso.html

So I confirm our hobby is not dying, I'm another Ham in space.

HI,

Whether you got your issue is dependent on how observant your mail carrier
is. Technically, according
to a conversation I had yesterday with mine, both the name and address need
to match. Otherwise, the
mail is to be forwarded if possible, or returned to the sender. (I am
referring to the US Postal
Service, but I expect other countries have similar rules.) It is
interesting that the great majority,
including mine, went through to the address with a wrong name.

Perhaps testament to the mail carriers being smarter than computers or
rules, and recognizing that this particular magazine goes to your
address regularly despite the name?

To be fair, the launch took place late on a Friday night, so people
were likely more interested in the weekend.

On the other hand, LADEE isn't going to do anything comparatively
interesting. After all, the moon isn't Mars and isn't considered an
exotic location. Examining dust in the lunar atmosphere? How dull is
that?

I remember when the Huygens probe landed on Titan, which I thought was
quite exciting. (Talk about the "strange new worlds" mentioned in the
opening credits for each episode of "Star Trek"!) Later that day, I
was chatting with a cashier about it and her reaction was "Huh?". She
probably didn't know where Titan was, let alone that there were two
spacecraft in its vicinity. Maybe Saturn, to her, was just another
brand of automobile.

Bernhard,

Somebody once observed that NASA had managed to make space exploration seem
routine. A compliment to
their professionalism and technical prowess, but perhaps not the best from a
public relations
standpoint. :)

Twenty-five years ago, it was not uncommon to see Gwyn Reedy W1BEL(sk) of
PacCom Inc or Phil Bridges G6DLJ of Siskin Electronics Ltd. promoting their
amateur and commercial TNC and high-speed modem products
==
An amateur estate is being sold on eBay seller: c200fish
Among the various PacCom/Siskin items are four PacCom Spirit-2 modems.
I have no idea if the satellite modem is installed, since these were sold in
various flavors/configurations.

I think Mark Hammond, N8MH was using the Spirit-2 for his ground station. I
have one if the earlier Sprint-2 (sat version) at my quiet station.

I can say that on Chincoteague Island, across from Wallops, there were
thousands of people there to watch. The causeway to the island was a traffic
