Can you hear it on the AM broadcast band?

If so use the ferrite rod antenna to get directions of it and have
yourself a fox hunt.

Hi Dave, N6CO

To find out from where the noise come out you need a MFJ-852 Meter A/C
Line Noise Meter visible in the following internet address:

http://www.mfjenterprises.com/Product.php?productid=MFJ-852

It is currently used by the Electricity Companies in England.

 Hi Estefan,

Yes for the moment I have a portable yagi which I am going to use with my
ht. But I also want to try it out with a full size rig and a pc...I don't
mind taking out all that stuff to my deck in the back
:-). I live in a rented townhouse for now...once I get a home things will
become more permanent.

I did get pocketsat for my iPad, excellent program.

To each his own.

I have worked 100's of passes from the road with an Icom 910 and an Arrow
in the past year. I find it the cleaner solution albeit a bit more
expensive than two all mode radios. It's not exactly handheld but with
the carry handle I can easily move it from its foam carry box to the roof
or trunk lid.

Every time I try to go with a two radio solution (typically a Yaesu FT-817
and FT-100/857) for portable Arrow work, I'm drawn back to a single radio
solution for simplicity. If I'm packing light and the IC-910 is ruled
out, a single FT-817 does the trick.

As we all draw from our personal experiences when making recommendations, I
will suggest :

Yaesu FT-817 for the traveler, adventurer, and experimenter.

Icom IC-910 for the person willing to take a shack-sized rig outdoors on
occasion.

Both are paired well with an Arrow. The nice thing about starting with an
FT-817 is the ability to travel with a small wire dipole to play HF. In my
satellite bag I normally carry a 20m end fed wire to kill time between
passes.

I sympathise with the original poster and have exactly the same problem;
20dB over S9, or worse, up to 21MHz.

My initial though was likewise that our 3KW solar system was the cause
and although it does add to the noise, switching it off barely makes a
difference. Our mains powered LED lighting also adds a little to the
noise, most noticeable at around 7MHz.

We live in a small town in the middle of nowhere and our closest
neighbours are 500 metres away. So that only leaves the overhead street
electricity cables and or the high tension cables that lead to the
switching yard some 2km from our house. We have underground cables from
the street to the house.

Whatever the cause, HF operation is out of the question at the moment.
If I can muster some enthusiasm I might investigate a loop aerial.

Phil

Dave,

I had a similar problem on 80 meters at my QTH. The power company
couldn't find it. I finally did. I drove the entire area mobile with my
706, trying different bands. Having 2 meter and 70 cm fox hunt antennas,
equipment and attenuators helped me a lot too.

The QRN signal on 80 was very high here, about 40-50 over s9. I finally
found it over 6 blocks away. It was a lower 'static' line (neutral)
touching a back support line, both ran between the two poles and crossed
each other barely touching. The funny thing was, when I measured it the
distance between the poles was about a half wave on 80/75. So the 'back
guy' was a good half wave antenna on 80. And it was aimed my direction.

My noise would go away when wet or damp and would get stronger when the
sun came up and warmed everything and evaporated the moisture.

Keep in mind, generally the noise won't be heard on the higher bands
(430 mhz) unless you are less than a couple hundred feet away from the
source. You can hear 80 meter noise from power lines over a half mile
away. The closer you get to electrical noise, the higher in frequency
you can 'usually' hear it.

Once you find it, insist the power company see the before and after on
your equipment. My contact here didn't believe that I could hear the
noise that far away.

Had a similar problem once. Got a friend to listen in the shack while I
walked around the neighborhood with a sledgehammer. Every time I came
to a utility pole i gave it a good whack. One particular pole, when
ever I whacked it, there was a blip in the noise. Took the number of
the pole, called the utility company and reported seeing sparks.
