Maybe the un-assembled frame was oriented "nose" down when he installed
them...so "this side up" made sense...

Except that not all of them were inverted, according to one report.

I also heard that on other rockets, these sorts of sensors can be tested
by watching the rocket, mounted on the launch pad, move as the earth
spins. This model sensor can't do that for some reason, and electrical
tests, of course, would show everything is fine. So it wasn't until the
rocket actually launched (by which time it was too late) that the error
was detected.

But fundamentally, I believe a device whose sole purpose it is to
indicate direction should have no possibility of being mounted in any
direction other than the one intended. Either that, or there should be a
calibration step in the process somewhere to correct for this. In fact,
now that I think of it, it should be a relatively simple test to look at
the sensors immediately (milliseconds) after launch to confirm the
orientation of the sensors, and flip them logically if necessary.

Of course, changing flight software is a non-trivial task, as would a
mechanical modification to key the sensor and mounting, so doing a video
inspection of the sensors as the only remediation is not a surprise.

A brief mention of the Slime Mold CubeSat posted last March on the AMSAT-UK
and Southgatearc.org sites has been picked up by one of the Space.Com
website writers, Leonard David, who has written a good article which
retained a mention of amateur radio.?

It's Summer in the northern hemisphereand media outlets can be short of
stories at this time of year so Leonards story has in turn been picked up by
a few other news outlets and hopefully that will spread. I guess the thought
of Slime in Space captures the imagination. Most of the resulting stories
seem to have retained the mention of amateur radio.

You can read Leonard David's article at

I did of course mean satellite not CubeSat in that last post

Hello,
Sounds familiar. The Genesis Sample Return Probe
crash landed in Utah in 2001 when its parachute
failed to deploy. Root cause was an accelerometer
that was installed backwards.

Hi All,

Just a quick note to say that from the 24th of July till the 30th of
July, I will be active sporadically on satellite passes from Guernsey
(IN89RL) as 2U0SQL.

I shall be focusing on FO-29 and SO-50 passes but no firm pass times,
but hopefully will have internet access and will try posting on
Twitter (@xxxxxxx when I'll be on.

Due to this being camping I will be battery powered using a FT-817 and
a Arrow antenna.

If anyone needs a QSL Card its direct to 2E0SQL or bureau.

73,

Hi Tom,

Watched your demo and downloaded on my Iphone at the same time.... Slick!
A lot easier to see than some other programs.

Thanks and 73,
