Patrick,
I was glad to help out with your demo. I was doing other
things and missed the first two passes. You had a
great signal into the satellite.
Were you able to hear KL7DR and KL4E? I know
they were both going to try.

Dale - KL7XJ

Hi All,
I am *NOT* a digital Ham - in fact, those that know me are aware
that I'm THICKER than the two proverbial short planks so I hope someone with a
bit more brain capacity than I have will help me.

I have two questions for the group.

Question 1.

Is there ant reason why I can't transmit a modulated carrier (FM) on the
145.900Mhz uplink of AO-16 and receive CW on the SSB/CW? downlink of
437.026Mhz ??.

Question 2.

I am 'TOTALLY' blocked by mountains re: the ISS and PCSAT and do *NOT* have
9600bps gear for AO-51 ... however, I can receive AO-16.

Can I use the UPW - (PSK modulation) - program to transmit APRS data on the
uplink and will that be received on the USB downlink ?? ... and be forwarded
to the internet via an APRS station ??.

I have attached the UPW file for perusal by anybody who has a few more
braincells than LA2QAA and is able to advise.

(There are currently no "normal" 1200bps sats - I am trying to find a
'satellite' use for an IC-E91 D-Star transceiver ... no D-Star repeaters in
Norway ... as mentioned, I'm totally blocked by mountains re: the ISS).

I would be very grateful for any advice and/or (sensible) suggestions please.

In theory it should work, but you'll gain little, because only one
user can access the uplink. Only advantage would be to stations with
Rx setups not up to scratch for receiving SSB, that might resolve CW.

AO-16 is running FM up/SSB down on a permanent basis. It is not
running any digital modes these days.

I'm not familiar with the state of digital operations, as I have
little interest in the current state of digital satellite operation,
and also find the hardware requirements to be a pain, because that
requires a fixed (or at least one that you can't operate while
wandering around) station, and I have traditionally operated
portable/pedestrian mobile/movile on various forms of public transport.

There's a number of people on here who can advise the best route for
digital ops.

Technically, yes it would work. But AO-16 is currently designated for voice
operations, and CW mixed in with the voice users might get you some
nastygrams from the other users.

Pretty much the same answer as #1. Before the memory system crashed, you
could digipeat through AO-16. Since then, we are limited to a bent-pipe
setup best suited for voice. We may get to the point with IO-26 where
digipeating is enabled.

You could try PCsat for 1200 baud APRS, or use MixW and your computer
soundcard for 9600 baud on GO-32.

Drew,
Thanks for your prompt answer to my queries.

That's precisely why I asked ... so as not get get up anyone's nose.

Actually, I can't work PSCAT or GO-32.

As I mentioned, I'm totally blocked by mountains for the ISS (so that rules
out PCSAT too) at 1200bps and the IC-E91 would be impossible !! to modify for
9600bps operation, even though MixW would generate it. I believe one needs to
"go in" somewhere near the varactor nodulator for 9600bps and for an IC-E91
that would entail micro-surgery ... when ICOM say "low speed digital
communications" I believe they mean about 25 bps a day! into the data
connector.

I find I can't get into AO-51 (portable) with low power and an Arrow aerial
due to the alligators - people calling a station that is actually still
speaking ... (on FM !!) ... is typical of the AO-51 operating I've been
monitoring ... in other words, sending all the wrong signals to the potential
newcomer.

There have been "reams" written on this subject but the age-old technique of
an inadequate receive system ensures the punter turns up the wick to
compensate - and cocks it up for everybody ... seems to be the order of the
day on AO-51.

Thanks anyway Drew - guess I'll just have to take up stamp collecting instead.

Or you could digipeat 1200 baud APRS through the ISS . The packet system is
currently turned on.

My grateful thanks to everyone who took the trouble to reply to my queries
about AO-16.

Of course !! ... I'd forgotten for a moment that AO-16 is now an FM single-
user satellite and therefore pretty useless for low power operation due to the
alligators ... so I would have been totally wiped out anyway if I 'd have
tried to use APRS or CW.

I'm still very grateful for the feedback though ... thank you all.

I was trying to find a "satellite" use for an IC-E91 D-Star handheld where
there are no D-Star repeaters and I'm totally blocked for the ISS (1200bps
packet and APRS) and when ICOM say "low speed data" on the E-91 they probably
mean something like about 200 bps a day !!... (???) ...into the 'data' socket.

I SERIOUSLY !!!! doubt it's 9600bps capable ???.

I am in range of GO-32 but don't have a 9600bps capable radio.
I have MixW to generate 9600 but I believe one needs to "go in" at the
varactor modulator on the transmitter and that would require micro-surgery on
an IC-E91 ... even if a circuit diagram was available - which it isn't ...

... but ... there's always stamp collecting !!.

Thanks again, one and all.

Hi Dale!

I was hoping there might be a chance to hear you guys on the 1520
UTC pass, but I knew that would almost certainly be too early (0620
Alaska time).

> Were you able to hear KL7DR and KL4E? I know
> they were both going to try.

Unfortunately you were the only one from Alaska I heard. I was
hearing voices for a minute or so before I called you, but the
satellite was still around 1-2 degrees elevation. When I called you
and you responded, I had about 3 minutes or so of audio that all
could hear clearly despite the static on the low pass.

Thanks again for coming up on that pass. I need to return the favor
more often, if you or your Alaskan friends do presentations or
demonstrations where the satellite footprint covers down to Arizona.

Why does not seeing ISS rule out PCSAT? Are you confusing PCSAT with PCSAT2
that flew on the ISS as a payload?
PCSAT (NO-44) is in a near polar orbit. It has much higher (latitude) coverage
than ISS.
