Fred,

If you heard nothing, perhaps you were listening on
Mode A when the sat was in Mode B, or vice versa. The
best way to tell which mode it is in is to check the
log at the site John sent. It is working well on both
modes at the moment. For some reason, most activity
is on CW, although I'm usually there on SSB.

Tonight someone fired up SSTV in the middle of a nice roundtable on the
145.88/435.15 repeater on AO-51. While the schedule does state that the only
special restriction is regarding the University Nights, the repeater is for
voice only unless otherwise scheduled. If we get requests for a SSTV night
on the repeater to ao51-modes(AT)amsat.org, we'll schedule it on at least a
trial basis. This is an idea I've kicked around for a while, but it needs to
be a scheduled activity please.

PS AO-51 users should keep an ear out for G7MAR/mm off the Pacific coast of
Colombia. He was on tonight from FJ05.

AO-51 March Schedule

AMSAT News Service Bulletin 069.01
From AMSAT HQ SILVER SPRING, MD.
March 9, 2008
To All RADIO AMATEURS
BID: $ANS-069.01

Last month we concentrated on L uplinks and S downlinks. This month we'd
like to concentrate on U band downlinks. In response to recent discussions
on AMSAT-BB, we are going to try two separate weeks of dual repeaters.
Unlike the QRP restrictions we have had in the past, this time the only
special restrictions are that regular users yield for university stations
that will be active on 27th. Please limit
contacts those dates to QSOs involving
at least one university station. If the second repeater is
not utilized, we may revert to digital operations.

The 435.150 repeater and 2401.200 downlinks may be temporarily suspended for
WOD telemetry download without notice. Generally this will only be for one
pass per day.

Regarding the graphic schedule, the software that does the schedule will
not allow for the proper display of some of the current modes or any
detailed information on special purposes. Please refer to the text page for
mode
change information.

Jay, AA4FL reports that College Night was a success on AO-51. College
stations
heard at the University Of Floriday (UF) during
the two evening passes (March 5 UTC)
were the University of Arkansas and a student
from the University of Kentucky. The
SEC was well represented! Contacts were made at UF by two students,
KI4LDJ (Dante) and N6WPV (Seth), and AA4FL (Jay), and included contacts with:
N0YK, N3UNM (Frostburg, MD, home of Frostburg state U), KI4VNV (UK student),
KB2HSH, KU4OS (mobile in Cocoa,FL), WD9EWK (portable in city park Phoenix),
W5YM (U ARK), N5AFV.

Thanks to all that participated. Look for us again on the next college night
on AO51, March 27th. Make sure to spread the word to college hams/club
stations you may know.

AO-16 Status Update

AMSAT News Service Bulletin 069.03
From AMSAT HQ SILVER SPRING, MD.
March 9, 2008
To All RADIO AMATEURS
BID: $ANS-069.03

AO-16 is doing quite well in its current mode.

AO-16 is currently operational as a Voice Repeater (Downlink is double
sideband.):
Uplink: 145.9200 MHz FM
Downlink 437.0260 MHz DSB (LSB and USB)

The plan is to continue this mode of voice operations "until further notice. "

AO-16 has been in full sunlight (no eclipse
periods at all) for several months.
That is about to change later this month! Short eclipse periods will begin at
the end of March and will increase steadily until
early July--at which point the
eclipse periods will increase to about 26 minutes each orbit. We'll have to
watch this old bird and its batteries as the eclipse periods increase.

It is possible that the long eclipse periods may necessitate the reduction of
the 70 cm transmitter output; this is a manual process for AO-16, since the
spacecraft isn't running any housekeeping
software to do it "automagically."
AO-16 is pretty loud at its current power
setting, so some reduction should have
little if any user impact. Observations and user reports will be especially
helpful during April/May/June/July this year. In order to collect telemetry,
we'll need to change the satellite into its
digital mode from time to time. But
this doesn't take long and therefore shouldn't interfere much with its
operations as a voice satellite.

The S-band beacon is not operational at this time. The exact status of the
S-band transmitter remains unknown; however, its last known status might be
described as "suspect" or "semi-operational" at best. Given the age of the
satellite (over 18 years!), For now, this falls into the "maybe we
should leave well enough alone" category.

It's actually live on NASA TV!

That is a nice development.

The English RealPlayer feed is about a minute closer to "true"
time...the others (for me) are delayed a bit...

Yep, we just watched it live out here on the Sea
Launch Commander, on our way to loft DirecTV-11 on
March 17th.
Congrats to our friends at Arianespace!

Patrick - I am sorry I missed tallking to you today on AO-51...How
did it go?

I got home about 1AM last night from a visit to the hospital
emergency room. I am now on crutches for a couple days...

Here's what happened. This my story, and I'm stickin' to it.

My dear wife, Karen, is at a meeting. I'm home. She has me so well
trained that instead of placing my cold drink glass on the front room
table and possible causing a condensation mark/ring on the wood, I
put the drink on the floor. I mean, no one's home, and the cat's
already asleep (and he isn't into Diet Coke) - this is a reasonable
act, right?

Phone rings, I get up and answer it. I return to the front room, and
immediately step on the glass. A 1/2-inch wide shard jams itself a
little over 3/4" into the middle of my right foot...

Couldn't feel much dumber. I called the 24-hour nurse at Blue Cross -
a pleasant woman with a wonderful Georgian dialect (the state of
Georgia - not from Turkey/Iran/Russia). After describing the
"incident" and the fact that it was a little over her breakpoint of
"1/4" wide and 1/4" deep" she concludes: "Oh, hon, you need to go to
the emergency room NOW..."

So, that's it. Nothing flashy. Nothing glamourous. I stayed up all
night with my leg elevated, then slept during your AO-51 passes.

Hi Clint!

The hamfest was well-attended, and contacts were made on all 3
AO-51 passes. No Hawaii stations, but Dale KL7XJ in Alaska
was on the last pass (1700 UTC), a very shallow pass for my
location. Thanks Dale, for getting up on an early (for you) cold
Saturday morning. The crowd enjoyed hearing Alaska on the
satellite.

It was very crowded on the first pass, around 1342 UTC. A typical
pass covering all of the continental USA. The next pass at 1519
UTC was the very high pass for the hamfest site, busy like the
earlier pass and a good show. Some of my Mexican ham friends
showed up from Baja California (Manuel XE2BHL from Tijuana/DM12,
and both David XE2RDA and Enrique XE2SER from DL44 in southern
Baja California) near the end of that pass. And, as I mentioned, Dale
KL7XJ and a few others on the west coast were present for the 1700
UTC pass. Without the increased power from AO-51, I would not
have even attempted that pass (maximum 5 degrees elevation to
the northwest). I still have to replay my recordings from those
passes to make my log entries, so I can't make a more-complete
listing of stations I worked this morning.

With great weather, the Scottsdale Amateur Radio Club hamfest
had great turnout - buyers and sellers. There was constant activity
around the AMSAT table. Several regulars on the FM birds from
outside of the Phoenix area stopped by (Leo W7JPI, Larry
WA6DIR, Jeff K7WIN, Bill K7WJS) and a couple of relatively new
satellite ops from this area (Bill AA4Q and Bob W0DXZ). Brock
W6GMT, who was at this hamfest last year, checked in during
one of the AO-51 passes from somewhere in DM15 (the Mojave
Desert, maybe?).

Working with me at the AMSAT table were Larry W7LB from
Tucson and Gerry VE4GTB/KD7MDB, who avoids the Winnipeg
winters by staying down here in the Phoenix area - thanks guys
for making the morning a fun time. Thanks to all who called me,
or tried to call me, during those 3 AO-51 passes today.

73!
