Hi!

Since I first posted about Hector CO6CBF coming to the AMSAT
Symposium in Orlando next week, I have received lots of e-mails
showing appreciation for this effort. Thanks to everyone for
their support! I wanted to mention that I have already received
some checks at my mailbox today, in response to the request I
made for donations to help with the expenses related to Hector's
trip. I won't list names and calls, but here is what arrived
so far:

$200 check from Texas
$ 25 check from Arkansas
$ 20 check from Alabama

Along with a $50 check I received from Tennessee some time ago
before I went public with this effort on the -BB, this means I have
already received $295 toward Hector's trip. Since I have not had
time to scribble a web page related to this, I will post updates
here on the -BB and my Twitter feed updates related to Hector's trip.
I do not intend on making public a list of names and calls of those
who have contributed, as a few have asked for anonymity - which I
will respect. All contributions are appreciated, no matter how big
or small.

A couple of hams have asked me if I would accept contributions in
person at the Symposium next week. This would be OK with me. In
person, cash would also be acceptable. You could send me cash
through the mail, but all standard disclaimers regarding cash sent
through the mail apply.

Hector sent an e-mail out this morning to me and a few others. He
is back in his home city Cienfuegos, after a quick trip to Havana
so he could pick up his passport with its newly-issued US visa at
the US "embassy" (formally called the US Interests Section, which
operates as a branch of the Swiss embassy in Havana due to the lack
of diplomatic relations between the USA and Cuba) yesterday morning.
Hector delivered his passport to a Cuban immigration office in
Cienfuegos today, so his Cuban travel permit can also be put into
his passport. He should be able to pick that up tomorrow, and then he
has all the government-issued documentation needed to make the trip -
and I can purchase his air ticket for the flights between Havana and
Miami.

That's all for now. Things are falling into place, with not much
time remaining until the Symposium. For those not able to make it
to Orlando, I'm sure there will be photos and videos posted from
the Symposium featuring Hector. More on that later.

There is still time to register for the 2012 AMSAT Space Symposium
and/or Banquet. Online registration will close on Monday, October
22nd. There will be good food, friends and prizes. Of course, the
presentations will be quite informative. Come and meet the AMSAT BOD.
Hurry - don't miss this wonderful AMSAT event!

This is a wonderful thing you're doing Patrick. I would of liked to have met
Hector, he was so happy when I worked him from DE for completion of his 13
colonies on satellite certificate! I'm feeling very sorry I'm not going to
be down there for the Symposium, I'm visiting the Orlando area first week of
November for a Disney vacation, as we just couldn't get our time share the
week of the symposium. May I suggest you accept donations via PayPal as a
gift? Just let me know your PayPal account I can send my donation to...

Besides HF, I hope to be able include some satellite contacts this
weekend for the Boy Scouts Jamboree on the Air (JOTA). I would love to
hear from others who will attempt some satellite contacts for JOTA. I am
just beginning to figure out what passes and satellites will work on
Saturday, October 20. I will be operating from Galveston State Park in
Galveston, TX.

Also, does anyone have info on when the ISS will be in contact with the
Boy Scouts in Irving, TX this weekend? I understand they have a
schedule set up and perhaps we can give a listen. Perhaps on the next
pass or so, they will consider a contact with others.

The ARISS schedule is updated quite often. I do post an announcement to
the SAREX BB of the updated schedule.

You can always go to http://www.amsat.org/amsat/ariss/news/arissnews.rtf
for the complete schedule.

The Boy Scouts will be having an ARISS telebridge contact via VK6MJ in
Australia. Below is an excerpt from what I have already posted.

National Scouting Museum, Irving, TX, telebridge via VK6MJ
Contact is a go for: Sat 2012-10-20 18:32:30 UTC 66 deg

As far as JOTA goes for general contacts, we tell the crew about the
weekend but we cannot demand that they participate. So if you hear them on
and
can work them, go for it. Happy hunting! Just realize that any general
contact as well as the scheduled ARISS contacts take place during a
crewmember's off time. So if you can work the ISS, please thank them for
taking
time during their off time.

I'll be operating NI6BB from the USS IOWA in San Pedro, California DM03
from 1700 UTC to 2300 UTC.

I'm planning on working FO-29 on the 1838 and 2033 passes, and AO-7 on
the 2210 pass out here.

If AO-27 is operational, I'll try the 1943 and 2120 passes.

There are two ISS passes, at 2052 and 2227, but I don't know what "mode"
the ISS will be in.

There are no VO-52 or SO-50 passes available during the 4 hour window we
have.

Hope to hear some of you!

Hello All,

I happened to be in the clubroom at K2GXT, The RIT Amateur Radio Club,
and check out the RS-15 beacon on 29.3525 MHz during a 25 degree elevation
pass over Rochester, NY this morning at 11:14 AM. I made a recording with a
TS-2000 and an 80M Off-Center-Fed-Dipole we normally use for HF operations
tuned to 10 Meters. I have commented on the soundcloud webpage linked to
below to indicate where the beacon is heard in the recording.

Hi!

While I have been working on my plans for the AMSAT Symposium
next week, I am going to attend another hamfest this coming
Saturday, 20 October 2012. This will be the Yavapai Amateur
Radio Club's hamfest in Dewey, Arizona - north of the Phoenix
area. More information about the hamfest, including a map to
get to the hamfest site, is available at:

http://www.w7yrc.org/arizona_ham_fest.htm

During the hamfest, I will try to work various satellite passes
for on-air demonstrations of satellite operating. If you hear
WD9EWK on those passes, please feel free to call and join in the
demonstration. The hamfest site is in grid DM34. As with my
other hamfests and presentations, I will be happy to send a QSL
card to stations making contact with WD9EWK during the hamfest.
Just drop me an e-mail with the QSO details, and I'll mail a card.
QSOs will also be uploaded to the Logbook of the World.

Special Symposium Visitor Hector Martinez, CO6CBF
-------------------------------------------------
Hector Martinez, CO6CBF will travel from Cuba to the AMSAT Symposium
in Orlando next week. AMSAT extended an invitation for Hector to
attend and to make a presentation. Thanks to the work done by Patrick
Stoddard, WD9EWK/VA7EWK, Hector has been able to obtain a visa to come
to the United States for the Symposium.

Once the invitation was extended, Hector had to approach both govern-
ments and file applications to get a Cuban passport and travel permit
and a US visa. All expenses for his trip must be guaranteed by some-
one outside Cuba. Patrick took on that task personally on behalf of
AMSAT, even signing legally-binding documents for the Cuban government
to that end. Patrick has covered expenses out of his personal funds
since no AMSAT funds are available. Patrick would appreciate donations
to cover the expenses via his callbook address.

AMSAT looks forward to welcoming Hector, CO6CBF at the Symposium!
