Aloha,
For those looking for a contact with Hawaii here is my schedule for this
Sunday and Tuesday:
Sunday 9/9/12
FO-29 2116-2123Z 11:16-11:23 HAST 14:16-14:23 PDT
AO-27 2242-2248Z 12:42-12:48 HAST 15:42-15:48 PDT
Tuesday 9/11/12
AO-07 Mode B 0123-0134z (9/12/12) 15:23-15:34 HAST (9/11/12)
18:23-18:34 PDT
Sorry that Saturday didn't work out, but the Tuesday AO-07 pass was added to
help reach most of the way across the mainland. Thanks to Frank, K4FEG, for
the AO-07 info.
Hope to meet on the birds. So far things have been working well. I had a
contact with Frank, K4FEG, in Tennessee, Clayton, W5PFG, in Texas, and
David, W0DHB, in Colorado, on a late night (Hawaii time) pass of FO-29.
Signals from my end in Kauai were heard down to the horizon, even with an
FT-817 running at 5 watts!

Hi All,
SSDV indeed shows you the images "as they come in"
Most High Altitude Balloons use RTTY with relatively slow baudrates.
The balloons are limited to using FSK modems in the ISM bands, because
of legal issues. Therefore, RTTY is the most feasable mode. Tim Zaman
here in the Netherlands has run 1200bd RTTY before on a balloon. see
http://www.timzaman.com/?page_id=1106&lang=en
He used the faster baudrate to send bigger pictures in the same time
and was running two baudrates alternating.
For satellites, you could run a more complex downlink off course, with
less transmission time and FEC.
64QAM might work on bigger sats, but I think it is not feasible for a
one or 2u satellite at the moment. I would place my bet on flying
BPSK/QPSK for now, and more complex things later.
Needless to say that I agree with David about the handshaking and
ACKs, but the balloons don't do that either.
I do not know anything on HF SSTV, but I have seen SSDV working just fine.

Hi Joe,
Actually, I checked on AO-16 last Saturday. I didn't even get the
transmitter to come on, let alone stay on. It was a low pass, and I hope to
check again in the next few weeks. If you'll remember, the problem with
keeping the satellite ON is temperature related. If it gets lots of sun
(little eclipse), it will be warm enough to remain on. Otherwise, it
won't...and the orbit is such that it doesn't get enough sun--and it
probably won't for another 10 years or so. But I check periodically.
About every week or two Drew KO4MA and I try to turn AO-51 back on. My
latest try was last Saturday. Nothing heard.
IO-26 is still up there, and still humming; it needs to be turned on from
time to time, so I do that. But we haven't figured out how to run it in
voice like we did with AO-16; it doesn't appear possible.
Don't know about AO-10; I haven't listened for a while. And I don't know if
it is expected to come on without commanding (which I cannot do).

Tom,
For now, about the only thing is IO-26. It spits out telemetry from
time to time, in bursts of "5' frames. It often burps as it goes into
and out of eclipse, for one thing... There doesn't appear to be a
timed schedule for transmission.
And of course, you can use MixW to decode the packets with a sound card!

Please don't ya'll laugh too hard at me. Has anyone ever mounted a

simply double check the location of my beam for eme. If anyone has
mounted a camera on a beam, I would be interested in what you used.
Yes, I know all about beam width vs the moon. I just hate to call CQ

I have been tinkering with NOVA Software. I simply cannot figure out
how to add additional satellites like SO50. I have pointed the update
to various sites that I thought should work but I have not succeeded in
getting so50 and some other amateur satellites to show up. Any advice
would be appreciated. I am sure I am making a simple mistake somehow,
someway. I guess that is what I deserve for tinkering.

Hi James,
Very simple.
- Go to AMSAT.org
-Look for Sat Status and find SO-50, you will find it's other name under
Saudisat-C.?? You can do the same for other satellites.
-Open Nova go to Setup tab on top left of screen. Open drop down list look
for Satellites
-Open the Satellites List look for Saudisat-C. Click on the satellite.
-In the Satellite Editor screen rename it to SO-50 or SO50 as you desire.
-Then press OK to save.
-Open Satellite page again. Go to theGroups Tab, look for Amateur.
-You will see a list of amateur satellites that are stored in your group
list. You can add satellites by dragging them over from the main list to the
Group list or you can highlight a satellite and then hit delete.
-Update the list to your liking and then press OK.
You should be good to go. If you have any other questions drop me a note
offline aa5uk at yahoo.com.
There is also a very good manual on Nova's website.
Have fun!

Greg, KO6TH, has done this.
I've got enough stuff to do it, and now that my antennas are down, I
might add a camera to the cross-boom.
Here's Greg's website: http://home.wavecable.com/~ko6th/

Yes, I've done that.
Only on a dx-pedition but it was also for EME.
I used a camera that needed to be plugged into 12V and produced a black
and white image in video format so it could be sent straight to a
monitor.
What I found was that the moon was quite small on the screen and it
wasn't obvious where to point the 4 x 19 ele yagis for 70cm. The
solution.....Easy. Go outside and look down the booms and when I was
happy it was in the right direction, go back inside and mark a cross
with a felt tip marker on the TV screen.
Worked just fine. If you are really 'keen' you can add a circle around
the cross representing the -3dB points.
