Hi Trevor,

The satellite signals will be received and decoded by the EXA HERMES-A
ground station in Guayaquil and then uploaded live to the Internet using
Facebook and Twitter...

There is a second ground station - HERMES B in Kirch-Brombach (JN49lr)
Germany :-)

Note that you can also install XP in a virtual machine on lesser versions of
Win 7 (and Vista), but it's a multi-step process, and you must supply the XP
installation disk.

First, download and install Virtual PC from Microsoft. Then create a
virtual machine, and install XP onto it just as you would to a real PC.
I did it on my Acer netbook with Win 7 Home Premium, so I know it works.

Id, I have sent you my informal 'construction article' along with pictures
direct.

This is an excellent compromise and economical...and it works great. I use
the Elk because, as you will see in the photos, you can center the weight
mass right over the RS rotor. I don't see how you could do that with an
Arrow, so I think the Arrow will be way too much weight hanging out there.
As you will see in the photos, you can paint ( any solid non-metallic color)
all the pvc pieces for weather an uv protection. The antenna and rotor can
be protected with multiple coasts of Rustoleum claer

Also, I think Bob Brunniga (from this group) has documented that 15 deg
fixed is the best overall el setting. You can also modify my design to have
the preamp on top. (mine is in the shack)

This setup got me most of my VUCC (but so did AO-51 !!) and it works.

I was wondering if an Elk or Arrow antenna mounted on a mast at an angle
with a TV rotor would work as a base antenna for Satellite work. Has anyone
done this and any tips on how you have been successful. If this does not
work what would be the best antenna other than beams for under $200.00 to do
this?
Thanks for your information.

Yep, that puts the main beam on the horizon where you need it most and where
satellties spend over 70% of their time. Even at 15 degrees, you still are
within 1 dB of max gain on the horizon. That same amount of gain covers up
to 30 degree too. And anything above 30 degrees is 6 to 10 dB CLOSER and
does not need much gain. Above 70 degres there begins to be a null, but
satellites will be in that null less than 1% of the overall contact time.

Hi Mike,

That's interesting to hear, does this mean the 902 MHz band downlink will be
active over Europe ?

Drew.

Besides the other programs listed already, I still use WISP for a few quick
look things, and that works fine on WIN7.

For satellite logging, if you don't use HRD, then the DXLabs DXKeeper. At
one time, it was the only program which actually did LoTW sat QSOs
correctly, and I never found a reason to change.

JT65HF, another take on WSJT, which I use.

You didn't mention what version of Win7. If Pro or up, you can download a
free XP virtual environment from MS, which works well for old programs, and
even allows ancient DOS programs to access comm ports.

For non-ham stuff, a good antivirus program, and a backup program such as
Acronis, Norton, or perhaps Paragon.

So my 4 yr old XP shack computer is in critical care right now, and I
have a new quad core Win 7 HP that I'm setting up today. So far I've
downloaded and installed:

SatPC32 (still working on the speech error problem)
MixW 3
HDR 5.sumthing
Spectravue

next up is WSJT

What must have ham radio programs, especially satellite/vhf/uhf, do you
have and recommend?

Hi,

I have used a very similar setup in the past with a Sandpiper dual band yagi
(3 elements on 2m, 5 on 70cms) so the Elk, or Arrow antenna should work just
as well.

I had mine set at a fixed elevation of around 30 degrees, this was great for
ISS, and AO-51 when she was active, good luck on the birds.

Hi all

I'm changing cell phone carriers and I can choose either an Android phone

I haven't decided which phone yet, but I'd like to know which
satellite-related apps other operators are using on both types of phones.
Are there any apps for satellites other than for tracking? (I'm interested

So I'm looking for recommendations and ones to stay away from. Any
particular features to look for in these apps, or any bug-a-boos to avoid,
especially when installing an app?

Reply to my email, N4HF@xxxxx.xxxx or to the BB (since others might be
interested too), although I don't want to be "blamed" for starting one of
those threads that seems to run on forever. :-) If there are any websites
which discuss satellite (tracking) software apps specific to smartphones,
that would be great!

Thanks. Gracias. Merci. Danke. Efxaristo. Spasibo, Obrigado

Hi Kev,

Yes, I find it possible to operate through SO-50 and AO-27 from
Oxford, England and I recently spent two weeks in Elgin/Lossiemouth,
Scotland (IO87) and found it possible to operate through both although
AO-27 was hard as it shuts down a bit early for northern Scotland from
my experience.

Okay--which small satellite is going to be released? I've lost track...

from www.nasa.gov :

"International Space Station Expedition 32 Commander Gennady Padalka
and Flight Engineer Yuri Malenchenko of the Russian Federal Space
Agency have begun a planned 6 1/2-hour spacewalk.

The pair will move the Strela-2 hand-operated crane from the Pirs
docking compartment to the Zarya module, preparing Pirs for its
replacement with a new laboratory and docking module. They will also
deploy a small satellite and install debris shields on the Zvezda
module."
