Subject: W1T - FN52 Grid Activation *UPDATES*

Unfortunately the weather off Cape Cod in grid square FN52 did not
cooperate. Instead, we operated from FN51 at the site of Marconi's
1902-1903 wireless station between Wellfleet and Eastham,
Massachusetts. Several FO-29, SO-50, and AO-27 passes were worked.

A major frontal boundary of low and high pressure systems was stalled
along the coast, causing too much uncertainty. Waves were observed
between 4-6 ft, winds a constant 15+ knots from the SW, and the U.S.
Coast Guard had issued a SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY. The nice thing is that
grids don't move. It'll be there for another day -- another
activation.

Thank you for all who worked W1T on this adventure.

I was getting ready for a pass today and heard a very disturbing
signal in the 70 cm satellite band (435.84MHz). The signal was very
strong. The signal was at least 500KHz wide (max range on spectrum
scope). The the spectrum looked like FM but the recording was made
with the receiver set to usb mode. I checked the signal on two
different receivers (IC-7000 and IC-7600 with a 70cm converter) to
make sure it was not a internal birdie of some sort. During the pass
it wiped out the sat when it was on. Fortunately it went away after
about an hour. I am fairly sure it was terrestrial as the signal level
did not change over the hour. Since it was on for only very short
periods of time it was impossible to point the beam at it.

Any help identifying the signal type would be appreciated.

Military radar. It's a common occurrence here on the gulf coast.

Hi,

Will be operating from approximately 15Z 13-August-2012 and 16Z
14-August-2012. I'll try to specifically be on at least the 1652Z-1707Z
SO-50 pass and AO-27 1711Z-~1720Z pass. Will have HF capabilities also. I
suppose someone will spot me on the cluster when they hear me. Callsign
will be FP/N8TLV. QSL via N8TLV either direct or LoTW. Weather may affect
ability to operate, particularly if the ferry is delayed/cancelled. Meteo
France is currently calling for a lovely day of fog and drizzle between 19
and 21 degrees.

73,
Mark

Hi Tom, W9KE

It was a RADAR signal with a prf (pulse repetition frequency ) of about
400 Hz

 http://www.tomdoyle.org/RX-8-12-2012-435.84MHz%20-%20USB.WAV

It is very common to hear those signals in my QTH close to the see
here in the bay of Naples.

The only cure to eliminate completely this type of interference was to
use a very efficient Noise Blanker like the circuit used into the old
nice receiver DRAKE R-4C with in front of it a VHF or UHF
downconverter.

I tryed many other novadays receivers with their Noise Blankers built
in but the only one capable to cut off completely the interference was
the optional solid state Noise Blanker for the old HF receiver
DRAKE R-4C

Just a note:
AO7-a over the USA this morning had a very nice signal, there was no one
but myself on the pass I was on, but the downlink was strong with minor
QSB, I tested with variable power levels and as expected high power
levels would bring on some distortion on CW signals and minor "FM'ing"
on SSB signals.

Running minimal power levels seemed to produce clear downlinks on both
SSB and CW. I am not sure how the "bird" would react with multiple
stations on simultaneously but it was quite clear with just myself on
the satellite this morning.

I think we just need to be gentle with the "Grand Lady of satellites"
she seems to working, for now!

I wish I had an answer for what is ailing the bird, but I don't. These
are just my observations of the satellite!

Yesterday morning, when it was in Mode B, I heard my downlink for the
first time in several days. The signal was weak and it sounded
scratchy, much like what I noticed the previous time I heard it.

I think it helped that the satellite was nearly directly overhead at
the time. Also, I set up my station in a park across the street from
the apartment complex I live in so I didn't have any RFI from my
neighbours.

Hi all once again,

Due to a mixup on Saint-Pierre Tours part, we are stuck in Fortune, NL
(GN27) for the day. We'll be in Saint Pierre tomorrow. We're taking the
7:15 AM crossing (NDT) and will be there until Wednesday afternoon. I
haven't looked at passes yet but will do my best to get on the AO-27 and
SO-50 passes closest to those times. I think there'll be opportunity
available since everything seems to close up for two hours around lunch.
In the mean time if anyone needs GN27, I'll probably be on at some point
this evening local time. Sorry for the inconvenience! The XYL practically
lit the town on fire she was so livid hihi.

73,
Mark
