UK Olympics Special Events Satellite Operations Commence This Week

With the "London 2012 Olympics" official opening taking place during
the next week, this is a reminder of the previously posted information
about the "Amateur Radio Flagship Event Stations" that will be opera-
ting beginning Wednesday July 25 until the Games close on September 9.

The London station 2O12L (two-oscar-one-two-London) and the station
in Wales (two-oscar-one-two-Wales) will be operating on amateur HF
and VHF/UHF bands during the event.

The Barry Amateur Radio Society in Wales, subject to operator avail-
ability and suitable passes, will endeavor to make contacts via the
amateur radio satellites as well of course as the HF bands.

The London has a restriction imposed on VHF/UHF activation which
will limit personal operations on the satellites. Outside the re-
stricted zone however there maybe other amateur radio operators
who may be active, not as "flagship stations" but using a personal
or club call sign under a notice of variation.

Barry Amateur Radio Society in Wales looks forward to making as many
contacts as possible for this rare opportunity. We take this as an
opportunity to wish all those participating in the Olympic Games
and amateur radio operators world wide "Good Luck".

[ANS thanks Ken Eaton, GW1FKY and the Barry Amateur Radio Society,
Wales, UK for the above information]

AMSAT and ARISS Support Moon Day 2012 at Dallas Love Field Air Museum

Moon Day 2012 was held on July 21 at the Frontiers of Flight Museum
at Love Field in Dallas, Texas to commemorate Neil Armstrong's walk
on the moon. The event featured space exhibits, demonstrations and
other space activities. AMSAT and ARISS were represented as they showed
amateur radio satellites including a model of the Fox-1 satellite.
This was an opportunity to promote the ARISS program also.

The purpose of Moon Day is to celebrate this astounding achievement
of humankind by bringing together local and national organizations
into one place where the public can walk and talk with the people
and the groups who are on the frontlines of space exploration, along
with space and astronomy advocates, hobbyists, and educators.

NASA JPL Explore Mars: Curiosity 3-D Interactive Experience

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California invites you
to prepare for the arrival of the Mars Science Laboratory rover Curi-
osity on August 6. JPL has developed a new 3-D interactive experience
which will allow you to follow along with Curiosity's discoveries on
Mars.

The beta version of "Explore Mars: Curiosity", a new 3-D interactive
experience can be found at: http://mars.jpl.nasa.gov/msl/participate/

When you first access this site you will be asked to download the
Unity application which loads seamlessly with your web browser. Once
started you will receive high-resolution terrain maps of Gale Crater,
Curiosity's landing site, collected from Mars orbiters. A 3-D "virtual
rover" version of Curiosity will follow the path of the real rover as
it makes discoveries.

JPL advises interested Mars fans to download the Unity game environ-
ment and test drive the rover early to reduce potential download de-
lays as global interest peaks during the August landing events.

Also available on the JPL Mars Science Laboratory web site is the
Mars Rover Landing immersive experience for the Xbox 360. You will
able to take control of your own spacecraft using Kinect and face
the extreme challenges of landing a rover on Mars. More details are
available on the web site.

I have a Trakbox that I am pressing into service. I recently installed
Don, AI6RE's turbo kit (speedup processor, 22 MHz crystal, 350D ROM etc)
and it is working fantastic.

I am also using LOGSAT (with Y2K and last updates).

One thing I had not tried prior to upgrade was the TRAKBOX host mode
operation with Logsat. In fact I had not given this interface much
thought, planning to use standalone mode. Host mode works from the
hyperterminal, but Logsat does not seem to be making itself understood
to Trakbox. I am using Portmon and can see Logsat delivering AZ_EL
commands in the proper format, and can sometimes see the AOS lamp
blinking slightly, however TRAKBOX ignores the commands.

It seems I have to use Hyperterminal to command the TRAKBOX into host
mode, disconnect terminal then start LOGSAT. LOGSAT does not start host
mode on its own, though I see a lot of "messages".

Can someone enlighten me on how this is all supposed to work? I have
read the TRAKBOX documentation, but no "aha moment".

Thanks, even comments from others using TB host mode with other software
is welcomed.

Hi,

I just finished repairing the RF power modules of my Kenwood TH-D7. The
M67798LRA and M67799MA were replaced by the RA08H1317M and RA07H4047M.

As this handheld radio is used for portable LEO satellite communications

helpful to others.

So, for those who are interested, I have some information about this at

Satellite newby here, trying to setup a station...

For all you SatPC32 users, a question. I'm using the software with 2
radios. One is an Icom IC-706MKIIG, the other is a Icom IC-746. While
the 706 covers vhf and uhf, the 746 only covers vhf.

The way my version of SatPC32 is set, it tries (depending on the
satellite) to set the 746 to uhf. I suspect there is a way to tell the
software that a radio can only do vhf, but can't seem to find where to
do that. Anyone know?

Thanks,

Kelly,

Take a look in the Setup menu under Configurations. You can set up 4
different radio setups which allows you to set up which ever radio you want
as your TX and RX radio. Then you add only the satellites that you want to
use for that particular configuration.?

I have mine setup so I am always using my IC-7000 for TX and my FT817or
FT857 for RX. I use one configuration for FO-29, AO-27, SO-50 and a second
configuration for AO-7 and VO-52. You have to restart SatPC each time to go
to another configuration.

Good luck.

Hello Kelley,
to steer both radios you only need a single COM port and a single CAT
interface or "CAT cable" with - for example - an y-adapter.
In menu "Radio Setup" , "Radio 1" section, choose Icom for brand and the
IC-706MKIIG for model. Set the CAT baudrate to 19200, do the same at the
radios.
In the menu set the first of the 2 Icom addresses for the IC-706MKIIG ($58
by default) and the 2nd one for the IC-746 ($56 by default). Click
"Addresses OK". Choose a proper COM port and set the CAT delay to 50 (try
the lowest working value lateron). Leave all other options in menu "Radio
Setup" unchecked. Set the Radio 2 section to "None".
Save the settings and restart the program. Click the "C" control to "C+".
With v/u sats (FO-29, SO-50) the program should now steer the IC-706 as RX
and the IC-746 as TX. With SSB sats you can tune th IC-706 around the
passband and the IC-746 will follow.

To steer the radios with u/v sats (VO-52, AO-07) set the second address pair
in menu "Radio Setup" to the vice versa addresses (first value for the
IC-746, second value for the IC-706). Save the changes and restart the
program.
The program will start with the settings for v/u sats. To run with u/v sats
open menu "Mode" and select the 2nd address line. The IC-746 will now run as
the RX on VHF and the IC-706 as TX on UHF. You can tune the IC-746 in the
passband with its VFO and the IC-706 will follow.

73s, Erich, DK1TB

Satellite newby here, trying to setup a station...

For all you SatPC32 users, a question. I'm using the software with 2
radios. One is an Icom IC-706MKIIG, the other is a Icom IC-746. While
the 706 covers vhf and uhf, the 746 only covers vhf.

The way my version of SatPC32 is set, it tries (depending on the
satellite) to set the 746 to uhf. I suspect there is a way to tell the
software that a radio can only do vhf, but can't seem to find where to
do that. Anyone know?

Thanks,
