Hi Drew,

So far as I know, Almasat went silent about
a week after launch.

PWsat transmits irregularlly but can usually
be heard every daylight pass. For what
little I can get from the PWsat web site
(in Polish) it seems to have a power
problem.
It's de-orbit sail has not yet been
deployed. No mention on the web site
of when or if the AO-16 style repeater
would be turned on.

Hi Alan,VY2WU

In your installation with the downconverter at the antenna it
is possible that your 75 feet of coax cable RG8X will directly
pick up some strong signal radiated into the 7 MHz band IF
because the shielding of the braid of a RG8X is not very
efficient.

A better solution is to put a 432 MHz low noise preamplifier
at the antenna and the downconverter in the shack.

The low noise preamplifier should have at least a NF=0.8 dB
and gain G= 20 dB

I remember when I was receiving the Meteorological satellites
transmitting into 136 - 138 MHz using an antenna mounted
downconverter with an IF from 26 to 28 MHz and I was interfered
by local CB stations transmitting on 27 MHz

Hi,

Thanks for all the positive feedback I received on the SimpleSat Look Down
program.
It is very rewarding to share something with the satellite community and
have it well
received.

I have been informed by the AMSAT administration that my YouTube video and
the 'SimpleSat Look Down' program is in violation of one or more of their
rule(s).

To comply with their requirements I have modified the program and shot and
uploaded a new YouTube video.

The new version of the program has been uploaded to the web site and the
website now
links to the new YouTube video.

To keep within the Spirit of the AMSAT regulations I think it would be best
if all those
who downloaded the 'SimpleSat Look Down' program destroy any copies they
may have
of the program then download and use only the new version. Don't worry, the
program has
not changed much. I do not want anyone else to get in trouble with the
AMSAT administration.

The new YouTube video looks great in full screen HD.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PYUmiUDr6YA

You can download the new AMSAT compliant version of the program on the
website.

http://www.tomdoyle.org/simplesatlookdown

The only remaining problem is the page on the AMSAT-UK web site they so
kindly
put up has a direct link to the offending YouTube video. Unfortunately
YouTube
does not allow any changes to a video once it has been uploaded. As a result
I had to upload the new video and this resulted in a new link address. Since
I had to delete the illegal video there is now a dead link on the AMSAT-UK
page.
Sorry but there is no other way to do it.

http://www.uk.amsat.org/7831

None of this is a big deal. Have fun.

Just as a matter of interest, what rules was it in violation of and why?

Keep in mind that any ham radio transponder on the moon will not be an "easy
sat". You will need an EME class station to work it.

If we build a lunar transponder, we can expect to see many, many postings on
Amsat-BB about how Amsat only cares about elite hams and is not interested in
building satellites for the common ham.

I'm not saying it wouldn't be fun to have a transponder on the moon, and we in
the USA might even be able to help you build it if they get ITAR fixed in
time, but we better put on the flame proof trousers when we announce the
project to the masses.

Thanks Dan,

Point well taken. Now, keep in mind we can find 1001 reasons why not. On
the other hand, how about reasons to do it? How many times will we ever get
a "free" ride to the moon surface? At this stage we need to declare our
interest and yes ITAR is a potential problem. However, how about we support
AMSAT-DL (in case they go for it) or AMSAT-UK or AMSAT-IT. Encourage them
to move on this. There are means and ways (for the US) to work with others
without being limited by ITAR. It is just too bad that so many times we
seem to focus on the difficulties and loose sight of the opportunities.

Thanks again, appreciate your feedback.

I disagree about having to have a EME class station if we put a
transponder on the moon.
The reason being, since the same side is always facing the earth, a
directional high gain antenna may be used on the transponder itself!

Might be the use of the AMSAT-NA logo without asking permission.

And if so, it should be easily remedied ... I mean, who would want to hold
up the
positive promotion of AMSAT-NA to audiences?

But I am just guessing ...

Are you sure about that, Dan? I'm hardly an expert on EME, still
looking to get there, but based on numbers I worked with some
time ago, even 500mW from the Moon should be copyable with
a good radio, with a yagi and possibly a preamp. This is not to
say that a random HT would work, but I don't think we're talking
of the classic EME-capabile station.

How big antenna and what band should be used? Please calculate the best
combination here:

http://www.changpuak.ch/electronics/calc_10.php

Note that you need about -120dBm signal to be heard in receiver.
The path is about 400000km (240000 miles).

hola, i am trying to determine the best way to work full duplex on the
birds with 2 HT's or radios. i cannot find any info so far on the web. my
concern is to keep the transmit power out of the receive radio, i guess
basically the difference between a diplexer and duplexer. since i am
efficient (lazy) i thought i would just look for suggestions here while i am
checking google also. what do i need, di/du/ plexer, and what is the
correct wiring scheme ? i will be using the arrow antenna without the built
in duplexer, from the 2 feeds (vhf/uhf) and 2 HT's for now. my picture of
it so far, is to wire the vhf radio direct to the vhf feed port on the
arrow, and have the uhf port on the arrow come into a duplexer, with the
duplexer uhf port going to the uhf radio, and the duplexer vhf port
terminated into a 50 ohm dummy load. also, any suggestions of specific
duplexers would be appreciated. i think i started on this project a few

If I understand your wiring, I think you have it correct.

Is this what you are trying to do?
http://www.amsat.org/amsat-new/articles/Mode-J/

Note that for mode-B satellites where you are transmitting on 70cm and
receiving on 2m, this won't work. In my experience, the extra filtering
is also not needed there.

Good luck,

Greg KO6TH

It is to bad that the concentration couldn't be on something clever that
would earn us some mass for a transponder. Like say some sort antenna that
is deplorable and would massively increase the data rates.. Like an
inflatable. Robert WB5MZO
