Hi Eric, ON4HF

Before to call F2IL an European alligator and give bad publicity on
AMSAT-BB I suggest you to use more fair play and send to him
an email and explain to him the problem occurred to day on SO-50

As far I know my friend Jean Marie is an expert satellite operator
and I have with him many correct QSO's on all the linear birds.

Here is the email address of Jean Marie F2IL

Thanks Domenico,

a quick search on the web turns out some good information about the ability
of F2IL to work satellites. He has a great record and accomplishments. A
personal email enquiring about what was going on is a good way of building
each other up and not causing unnecessary conflict. We all can jump very
quickly to the wrong conclusions and cooler heads need to prevail.

To quote Clint: "Well, I ask, WHEN did the true spirit of ham radio CHANGE
to the point where we can demean fellow hams in public message groups -
WITHOUT simply contacting an "offending" ham privately to see if we could
help them with their system?

It is okay to share frustrations, let's work to make things better for all
of us.

for the sake of conversation what would a link budget look like for a
transponder on the moon?? Say for L & S band, get out the old AO-40 gear!
(sobsob).? Still rebuilding all antenna systems, includes digging holes,
mixing concrete, welding, gin poles,?trying to convince ?xyl etc.

Hi Stefan, VE4NSA

It does not make sense to put a transponder on the Moon just for the simple
reason that it's much more, simple and cheap to put it into earth orbit.

Yes Domenico,

You are correct. However, that particular ESA proposal is not about putting
it into orbit. It is an opportunity to have a payload placed on the moon.
Once ESA has a proposal to put something into orbit, by all means.

Hope this helps,

Stefan

I'm sorry Clint, but this is the way I see it:
If you can't hear the downlink, stop calling cq because you won't hear
anyone to talk to.
I know that station for a long time and this wasn't the first time.
When I call cq on a lineair transponder, Jean-Marie is also there to
call also cq on the same frequency, why?
I then just move to another qrg, problem solved :-)
But on a fm sat that isn't the case. You get frustrated after a while.
73,
Eric.

Absolutely! If you cannot hear the bird, do not transmit.

>> ... calling CQ ...

Calling "CQ" is not an appropriate method on the FM voice sats.

Hi Craig, and others,
I use full duplex from the first day that I use the ham satellites.
I also prefer the ssb birds but if I am working handheld with an arrow
antenna I can only work the fm sats for now :-( with 2 portables, full
duplex as it should be.
If Jean-Marie had wait for about 20 seconds, then there was no problem,
but constantly calling cq on top of anybody else makes it more difficult
to get the qso done.
I got an email from M6DNU that evening, also complaining about the
constant cq calling and thanking me for my patience.
Let this be a lesson for everybody, if two stations are exchanging a
report en grid locator, please let them do that and when the qso is
over, THEN call cq.

I seem to have stepped on some people's toes and I apoligize for that. I
was frustrated when I wrote to this reflector because constant calling
cq on the fm sats is a common problem here in Europe.
I don't understand why people are doing that. What is the point of
calling cq when two other persons are in qso? (for only a few seconds!)
It's just a waste of time. And everybody gets frustrated because 1
person is keeping the sat occupied and nobody can make a contact.

Once again, my apoligies to Jean-Marie. I hope he will forgive me.
73,
Eric.

Hi Stefan, VE4NSA

I believe that ESA is interested to have a payload placed on the moon only
to make important and particular experiments that are impossible to manage
to put something into earth orbit.

The capability of an Amateur Radio transponder to communicate between us or
for educational outreach and training opportunities associated with it can
be experimented even placing a transponder on earth orbit or on top of a hill.

As you realize for the moment ESA seems to be not to much interested on
satellite amateur radio P3E and scientific probe P5A to Mars, figure out to
place an amateur radio transponder on the Moon.

  Yes Domenico,

You are correct. However, that particular ESA proposal is not about
putting it into orbit. It is an opportunity to have a payload placed on the
moon. Once ESA has a proposal to put something into orbit, by all means.

  Hope this helps,

  Stefan

It does not make sense to put a transponder on the Moon just for the
simple
reason that it's much more, simple and cheap to put it into earth orbit.
