ISS packet is currently active on 145.825 simplex. You can check to see
if packet is active by looking at the reports on any of the following
websites:
http://www.ariss.net
http://www.issfanclub.com
http://oscar.dcarr.org/index.php

If packet is off, your chances are low (but you never know) of hearing
voice on 145.80 unless it is a scheduled school contact during your
pass. School contact pass times are posted regularly to the SAREX
reflector. You can view recent postings here
http://www.amsat.org/amsat/archive/sarex/48hour/threads.html

I finally got my TNC hooked up, and was able to decode APRS packets. I
wanted to try during a rather low ISS pass, see what I could get off
of ISS, but got nothing. I tried both 145.825 and 145.8, hearing
neither voice nor data.

In fact, I've never heard anything on ISS (except for the one
scheduled contact I made with it :-D).

Is it currently operational for voice and/or packet?
How often is someone likely to be using it (what are my chances of
hearing something on any given pass)?

TIA,

Rick

I captured many packets on some early passes this morning. Just
leave that TNC and radio running and check the log daily and see
all the calls heard that day. You can see all the packets on
http://www.ariss.net and as of right now (1830z on the 6th) the
most recent packet captured over Arizona is only 1 hour old, and
the entire list of the last 50 stations heard is only 13 hours
old, so it seems to be working.

Anyone with a whip antenna and not bad coax (or too long) should
hear ISS fine.

I was disappointed with my Elk dual-band log periodic on the FM birds - in
comparison to the Arrow. And I remember giving it a fairly honest try...but
was immediately struck by how "sloppy" it was in finding the satellite.

Should I try it again???

Not to mention that it would be darned near impossible to be able to ascertain
when apogee occurs with even a medium sized rocket at one mile high - and I
know that I wouldn't want to deploy my mains after my rocket has had a
thousand or more feet of altitude loss from apogee - instant shred!

On Saturday evening, Frank Brickle (AB2KT), will have his opera
performed by the Cygnus ensemble in the Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall in NYC.

For those nearby, there are tickets available, but they are going fast.

I've listed my backup tri-band Kenwood TS-790A on Ebay,
#330217737959. This includes the L-band 1.2 GHz module,
modifications for 9600 bps FSK and the noise blanking modification to
allow external tuner control of frequency without data loss. The
unit is in like new condition. I used this unit to command AO-40 in
the field and gather telemetry from sites remote to my QTH.

(Yes, I still have equipment for AO-40 command capability and do try
every couple of months to re-awaken AO-40. When I hear something,
you will as well.)

Thanks for looking. -Stacey

Bob,
Normally ... to edit your own entries you just click on the hourglass
where you entered the info ... (left hand edge) ... and a new screen pops up
where you can delete, edi6t, change to correct things.

However ... some people have been reporting that this faqcility is not working
as it should.

A work-around is to make sure !!!! the *REMEMBER ME* box at the bottom of the
log entry page is checked.

<http://www.planetemily.com/ao7/logentry.php>

(I've been asking people to correct their own incorrect entries - but quite a
few don't bother).

Normally, Emily sent me a cookie every December so I could administer the log,
which I did for some years - but then the cookies failed to materialise and
Emily disappeared.

RGR re: her mailbox ... as I mentioned earlier, she's disappeared down the
rabbit warren of SECOND LIFE into the 'virtual' world ... and that's the
reason I keep batting these mails to the Amsat-bb ... in the hope that one day
one of them might filter down the burrow and into SECOND LIFE where it might
be noticed by N1DID
(ex: W0EEC).

I have no intention of going down there myself, I have enough to contend with
in the "real" world without faffing around in a pretend world.

Let me know how it goes Bob.

Mr John-I accidently entered VA7MG instead of my call. Then I tried to edit
it out as to get the egg off my face. I got a full message saying Emily's
mailbox is full and something about cookies. I believe if we were to be able
to edit out our own screw ups it would make this better. Case in point this
latest ooops of mine. John, is there a way we can do that?
Sorry (again)

Hi Arthur,

I have seen the Wireless Geography in Salt Lake City ! !

The IEEE Spectrum shows that the minimum signal level of -51 dBm
downtown buildings is a very very strong signal not to mention the
maximum level of -15 dBm on top.

A single 1/2 wave dipole (Gain = 2.14 dBi) directly connected to a zero
bias Schottky diode HSMS 2851 at 2.45 GHz will detect about 0.3 mV
with - 51 dBm and 1000 mV with - 15 dBm

You don't need a receiver up there but a multimeter will do the job !
