On an AO-27 pass this afternoon, I worked three stations: N7GWB, WC7V and
N5UXT.  Nothing unusual about that, but I should mention that I was using a
garden-variety FM radio, an FT-7800, and my KISS antenna, a 19-inch dual-band
magmount.  One more easy way to get on the birds.

I presume you're using a 64 bit system.  Only way I can see around it
is using one of the many virtual machines and running a 16 (Windows
3.x anyone?) or 32 bit Windows version inside.  If you're running a
32 bit OS, you should be able to run a 16 bit program.

Windows 7 doesn't do 16 bit programs.  If you have XP mode

If you are just trying to run a 16bit app on a 64bit Win OS. If its an
MS-DOS application you can try DOSBox. If not then your options for running
on windows are to install a 32bit version of windows, as already noted this
can be accomplished with a virtual machine, or as a dual-boot. If you have
Win 7 Pro or Ultimate look up "XP Mode". If not look at VirtualBox or
VMware Player, you will need a copy of a 32bit version of windows and any
32bit version will work. Another option is to use Wine for Linux, again you
would have to install a Linux operating system, and this again can be done
either in a VM or as a dual-boot. One nice thing about Wine is that it will
run 16bit windows programs in a 64bit Linux. Interfacing with hardware can
get tricky when running a VM in Windows.

I have a 5 year old dell laptop running a 2.0GHz Intel Core2Duo (dual core)
with 2GB of ram and it handles both XP mode and Linux on VirtualBox just
fine, there is a little lag but not enough to be an annoyance. On the other
hand my newer Asus netbook running a 1.8 Intel Atom (dual core) with 2GB of
ram runs just a little on the slow side.

I will note that if DOSBox doesn't make it work all the options are going
to involve a fair amount of work and a lot of overhead. The simple fact is
that it is not trivial to maintain compatibility with the
older architectures and there simply isn't enough demand for it. Most
people end up in one of three camps,

People always mention XP Mode, which can only be installed on Win 7 Pro,
Ulitimate, or Enterprise, but if you have an installation disk for XP
available, you can install & run XP on lower versions of Win 7.

Simply download & install the standalone version of Virtual PC from
Microsoft (free), create a virtual machine, and then install XP on it (note
that, if you don't have a CD drive, you must burn an ISO of the installation
disk to a flash drive and configure that as a virtual CD-ROM in your virtual
machine).  You will end up with the same thing as with XP Mode, the only
difference being that YOU must provide a licensed copy of XP, where it is
included with XP Mode.

I know it works, because I installed it on my Acer netbook with Win 7 Home
Premium.

I still have not heard of anyone copying the HF beacons on 30 and 40m.
(10.147 and 7.102 MHz).  I am curiouis about this because our next balloon
flight will only have an HF beacon and nothing else.

I have been  in the 400 mile footprint most of the morning, and have heard
nothing, though it is tracking out past Nova Scotia just fine on APRS...
