Do you have a 10 meter (28 MHz) vertically polarized beam?

We are working on a 28 MHz transatlantic Balloon with a CW transmitter on
10m using (of course) a vertical dipole.

It will have no GPS, so tracking will be entirely by beam headings and some
signal-strength assessment.

Just wondering if anyone has a vertical beam.

A horizontal beam will be useless for direction finding. All it will do is
point to whatever is reflecting the energy into the strongest horizontal
component...

I wonder if somebody has any clue what that very last packet in the MaSat -
1 sequence could be ? The single packet which gets transmitted at the end of
the sequence, before

the 10 seconds or so of silence and the beginning of the CW.

It never decodes with the software, even in excellent signal conditions. So
I think the decoder doesn't understand it, or

?can not/want not to show its contents.

Some kind of checksum ? Signal calibration ? Hidden Telemetry data ? Message
to E.T. ?

Just curious. And yes, 006D has my vote.

I sent packets yesterday with this email address, and then registered
in the evening. This morning I see that it has retrospectively counted
those packets to my new account! The only authorization I had to do
with the software was to tell my Win7 firewall that java could connect
to the internet on my behalf.

So the system seems quite robust (not to mention pleasing to the eye).

During the 02/16/2012 1138UTC pass here at EN91ck, I used Object D and
was right on. Object C AOS and LOS was off by a minute or more although
that is what the Masat-1 website is using.

I still have no local indication that my packets are being uploaded, but
I am showing 97 packets received on the website. Of course, my logs
show many more than that.

This is fun. 73,

I just went to the Masat-1 Website and see that they are now using
Object E keps (38081), so I will try them during the next pass.

Well, I still don't have it forwarding packets, according to their webpage.

What is the delay from time of packets submitted to posted on the web?
Seconds/minutes/hours?

Looking harder here, but it sure looks like Windows firewall is set to allow
JAVA to do it's thing...

Bruce, how did you tell Win7 firewall to use JAVA? Did it pop up a
security window for you to enable traffice? I don't remember seeing that,
but this isn't the first JAVA thing I've done...Win7 firewall settings show
java.exe and javaw.exe enabled for both TCP and UDP traffic.

Bleh.

Same here, no luck sending data.
Bruce, do you maybe have a direct outside IP? I'm behind a NAT.

Sorry, ignore my post and look at the thread [amsat-bb] MaSat
Telemetry Software.
The "online" indicator has nothing to do with the actual sending of data.
But nevertheless, Mark still shows as 0 packets.

I wonder if I am incorrect in generalizing my experience. On the
website map, it seems too many people have '0' packets reported. And
my latest pass (some good data at 4 deg. max el.!) isn't reported yet.

When I first ran the application, windows firewall popped up and
asked for me to permit java to access the internet. In my case, it was
the first time I'd used this java install on this machine, so that is
probably the difference.

Despite this discussion, I think we'd all agree that this is a great
package and it makes working with this new satellite very interesting.

It's been a while since I configured my wireless router, but I'm on a
home setup probably with the usual NAT tomfoolery :-)

Indeed, Bruce--this software implementation for the telemetry is awesome!

We'll get these issues sort out. The good news of course is that the
packets are being logged locally, so they can submitted manually via
email (which I haven't done yet...)

I removed the current Win7 firewall exceptions for JAVA---no
warning/permissions window popped up!
Uninstalled/reinstalled Java--still no warning/permissions window
popped up; and no exceptions were added to the firewall during
re-install.
Manually added java.exe and javaw.exe to the firewall exceptions
(shows both TCP and UDP), and will test out later as the bird comes
into view...

Bob says
"Just wondering if anyone has a vertical beam. A horizontal beam will be
useless for direction finding. All it will do is point to whatever is
reflecting the energy into the strongest horizontal component..."

That is only true when receiving the signal via direct line of sight
propagation.

Once the signal is over the horizon, and is using the ionosphere to
propagate the signal, the reflected signal can and does come back down
at any polarization.

Matter of fact in minutes it can "Rotate" from vertical to horizontal
and anywhere in between. or even faster rotation. QSB is mostly caused
by this polarity rotation of the signal.
