Having a computer controlled, full duplex station with azimuth and
elevation rotation, receiver pre-amplifiers, and high gain antennas is
nice.

Being able to point your small yagi antenna at the sky and work an FM
transponder anywhere in the world with a HT is nice.

Both scenarios require a common element for success: the operator's skill.

Rather than attack others' ideas of a "perfect satellite station," why
not try to support each other in becoming better operators?

Having the right equipment is truly important. Having the right
skills to operate, in my opinion, is much more important. It is
doubtful that everyone on this mailing list will ever agree what
comprises "the ultimate satellite station." While some favor
flexibility of portable operation, others may strictly utilize the
highest gain antennas available.

Next time you hear some bad operating practices, consider writing a
kind note to the offending station. Be considerate that the station
may be unaware of their satellite faux-pas. Perhaps they are new and
have had little guidance from an Elmer. Take the opportunity to
welcome the station and introduce them to the "right way" of doing
things even if they are not using your favorite radio or antenna.
Good ham radio operating skills are not typically an inherent quality
of man -- it takes time to develop them. At some point in history,
you made your first contact.

Patrick,

How did you manage doppler shift between the FT-817ND and TH-F6A?

Hi Joe!

> How did you manage doppler shift between the FT-817ND and TH-F6A?

Carefully, and with a lot of practice. ;-)

Since I'm not running computer control, I try to keep to the "One True
Rule", and make any changes to the higher frequency. For VO-52
(and also AO-7), that would be the transmit frequency. Sometimes I
am adjusting both the transmit and receive frequencies, to keep up
with whatever the other station is doing. Once you get the hang of
finding yourself on the transponder and then keeping your signals
in your own receiver, it is easier to track what other stations are
doing.

I have posted another video from a VO-52 pass this evening around
0201 UTC, using the same FT-817ND/TH-F6A combination I had in
the video this morning. That video is now available at:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HiTO8pv1M1k

I worked 3 stations on this later pass, but two of the three reported
QRM on their end. All sounded fine at my station. I also tried the
0335 UTC pass for the western USA, but only talked to myself for
10 minutes. I won't worry about posting any video or audio from
that pass, but it was a good pass for me to play around with lower
power levels near the midpoint. At 500mW, I could still hear
myself clearly. And no preamps.

73!

Still looking for someone in Hawaii to work for my last state for satellite
WAS. From EN41 either AO7 or FO29 would have to be used to make contact.

While FO29 is operation it might be the better choice as it is quite a bit
easier to work at low elevations and it in my opinion is easier to work
portable. If anyone could help that would be great!
