Thanks for calling me on there. When you called me and I
responded to you, that was the first moment I could clearly
hear the downlink. You had a good handle on working
stations during that pass. That was only the second time I
tried an AO-27 pass starting before local noon time (1900
UTC), and I only had a maximum of 5 degrees elevation
on that pass. .

Have fun while you're down there. 73!

Hi All,

Would someone more familiar with wikipedia please edit the photo currently
claimed as AO-51 in that entry? I'm not sure what satellite that is, maybe
one of the SaudiSats, but it's not 51. The error was carried over to this
month's QST even.

http://n4hy.smugmug.com/AMSAT/AO-51-ECHO/02-Preparing-ECHO/042-CIMG1769/108846
063_hZifv-X2.jpg is a good shot of AO-51 just before launch.

Thanks, Drew KO4MA

Hi Drew,

I deleted the old one. Do you have a nice one? Ship it to me and I
will try to post it.

I would tend to be slightly more positive. The decoders, while known to
fail after a static shock, are old line 4k CMOS. These are still around at
fleas and so forth. The X51 series is a solid workhorse IF the switching
supply (internal) is OK. Some were good, some were bad and stayed that
way. The flourescent display supply is probably subject to electrolytics
drying out over time given the age of the radio. I still have mine as a
back-up and because it was part of a terrestrial record. It definitely
can use a prea generation of radios were very sensitive

Went to local flea market today (34F degrees out) for a wwod stove and was
shocked to see a guy selling brand-new boxes of VHF and UHF, and Dual band
HT's fully programmable from 140 to 170 and 440 to 570 MHz 5 to 7 watts.

He had several brands and some were even dual band. Most boxes had chinese
instructions.

Radios were between $65 to $80 each.

I guess I knew that these were available, but now that they are being sold
in large quantities at general (non ham) flea markets, I guess the cat is
out of the bag.

During the last year's Hurricane in Connecticut, I was listening to
Mom's Fire Dept scanner and there was a party harassing the fireman
while they were responding to a call...he had a kid or girlfriend in the
car you could hear giggling...after trying the tried and true ignoring
him for about 15 minutes, the police came down from their 800 frequency
to warn him to cease and desist or he was going to jail. That town's
fire is on 460 UHF with simple PL..

Buy your all band programmable, off shore radios now, because if this
continues they will be banned just like the cellular scanners were.
