All of my full duplex sat operation has been with 2 radios, so why
not. :) There are some advantages of running two radios, especially
where the uplink is on UHF, as with some radios, adjusting the uplink
for Doppler can be fiddly. With 2 radios, you simply tweak the
relevant VFO knob. :)

Yes, I got in and got control, and that freed up power, but almost
immediately several stations hit it with digipeats before I got the digi
turned off. So it crashed on the next eclipse.

Im going to try real hard to remember to try again on Friday.

Hi Bob,

Is this something where a West Coast command station would be more likely to
succeed, given the satellite's West-to-East orbit. Catch it while it's
still over the ocean, before the mass of home station beacons come in to
view? That was our "unfair advantage" in making contacts with MIR / ISS
astronauts... I recall having a nice chat with John Blaha on the MIR
station years ago. Caught him just as he came up over the horizon, as I was
driving west down the hill on my way in to work.

Just a thought.

A local friend here has an Icom 451A 70cm all mode which he might sell me.
What is the typical selling price for these rigs? It is in good physical
condition with the mic and power cord. Are there any typical problems that
show up with these rigs as they age, that I should be looking out for?

During my quest for x75 Icom rigs, I was told a few times that
the 471 did not have a service manual, and you had to use a
271 manual for it. Since I have not ever seen one, I tend to
think that is true.

I've only used a 471 once, but I have respect for it. The
larger problem with it may be its age, and getting some of
the specialty ICs could be hard. I seem to remember a few
of them selling on ebay in the $200 area?

Or for that matter, stations outside the US? I'm sure there are a few
prepared to take a crack at it as it comes in from the north-west over
the Atlantic.

Bob, get in touch with Scott Malcom, MTS, in Washington State. Google
it up. Scott is a former Icom tech. He specializes in older Icoms. He
has repaired several of my X75 series radios. That being said, I had a
decoder chip fail in a not-so-old Kenwood and I had to find another
radio for parts. It might be time to think about upgrading to a newer
radio. You might find after all is said and done that you have more
money in the radio than it is worth. In fact, that might be the case
right now after the very expensive trip to Icom. Just a guess. I have
and use all of the X75 radios here and it is kind of like keeping a
vintage car running. They have better selectivity than anything else
out there except possibly a transverter. Good luck.

No more than $100. I actually think they are about worthless based on
the current radios available and the age unless you are just into
vintage radios. What are you going to use it for? I had a 251A as my
first two-meter rig for weak-signal work. It was deaf. It HAD to have
an outboard preamp. None of this generation of radios were very
sensitive based on the technology used at the time.

I would say it might be a great radio for your repeater work.

Hello everybody,

ISS heights plots are available at the following link:
http://www.heavens-above.com/OrbitHeight.aspx?satid=25544&startMJD=55610&lat=4

I've noticed that Apogee and Perigee heights have different behaviour
during reboosts (look at mid September for example),
could anybody help me to understand why?

Thanks in advance,

These maneuvers are not done continuously around the orbit. They are
typically done in burns done at apogee and perigee if all they are doing is
raising/lowering the orbit and minimizing any changes to the orbital plane.

Think of it like this. When I turn the propulsion on, I do not change my
CURRENT instantaneous position while I am burning. What I change is my
velocity. So if I burn the motor at apogee and the motor is firing along
my velocity vector, then I am speeding myself up. THIS RAISES PERIGEE
because I will have the same height but my speed will cause the position on
the OTHER SIDE of the orbit to be raised. Similarly, I slow down at
apogee, perigee is lowered. If I speed up at perigee, apogee is raised,
........

Did this help?

Bob

There have been various postings and publications in QST and Funkamateur
about the brother of this radio, the Baofeng UV-3R, and it's very poor
harmonics filtering on the 2m band. Harmonic suppression was something
like 15-20dB.
I recently measured an UV-3R mark 1 (single frequency on display)
and confirmed that the very poor filtering was indeed the case.

Since these things transmit from 136 - 174 I tuned frequency a bit
and found that suppression is OK at 165 MHz and above, and gets worse
as the frequency goes down. On 136 MHz (on which I don't transmit
except on a dummyload of course), I found that harmonic suppression
was *negative* in some cases. Some of the publications confirm this,
so my measurements are sound and it's not an incidental case.

On request of the owner, I did the "capacitor mod" (adding a capacitor
to the lowpass filter) and found that the suppression was still inacceptable.

I purchased an UV-3R mark 2 (dual frequency on display) and established
that while it was "mark 2", the harmonic suppression was as poor as
a Mark 1 radio. I have not voided the warranty yet on this radio
to do the capacitor mod on the Mark2 radio, but I'm not hopeful.

While some people claim that "it may pass the specs because the Mk1 radio
comes with separate antennas for VHF and UHF", the mark2 comes with
a dualband antenna and for sat work, with an Arrow antenna or similar,
harmonic attenuation of the antenna is nonexistant - we sat hams use
good antennas!

Mail sent to the manufacturer address in the manual on this issue
remains unanswered.

The Dutch regs specify '-36 dBm or -60 dBc, whichever is highest'
and this radio doesn't even come close. FCC regs may be less tight,
but I think our transmissions should be to the highest standards
and frankly, this radio doesn't come close.

My conclusion so far is that the thing may be good enough for listening,
but when you want to transmit then this radio is only useful if your
table tips and you need something to remedy that, but not for
making QSO's.

I have not measured the UV-X4 but have been told the internals are
the same - the controls are in the same position, in any case.

73,

Geert Jan PE1HZG

PS: the separate charger does not have any protection circuitry
in it and depends on the protection circuitry in the battary itself
to charge (and protect) a dangerous LiIon cell.
Personally I would not use this unless I have it in sight and
a way to remove power quickly - these cells are temperamentful
when overcharged, and the battary protection circuit is not intended
to replace a correctly designed charger protection circuit..

I have one of these radios. Had many good years of use. A problem came up as
follows: the frequency of the radio would not change properly when rotating
the tuning knob. I sent the radio in for repair and ICOM sent it back saying
that the decoder chip had failed and they did not have any repair parts any
more.
Good luck,

During my quest for x75 Icom rigs, I was told a few times that
the 471 did not have a service manual, and you had to use a
271 manual for it. Since I have not ever seen one, I tend to
think that is true.

I've only used a 471 once, but I have respect for it. The
larger problem with it may be its age, and getting some of
the specialty ICs could be hard. I seem to remember a few
of them selling on ebay in the $200 area?

You get what you pay for.2 watts on a satellite would be tough to use and be
heard anyway with all the big guns out there. But it still maybe good enough
to use .Full duplex is not necessary if one knows how to use a HT. I have
used the wouxoun 144/440 on the birds with great results.

Heil does not recommend the Travelller with the '847, Call them and see why
not. 618-257-3000.
