The CHIBIS-M research satellite is to launch to the ISS/MKC on the Progress
cargo mission of 25/26 January.

The payload is a scientific satellite to be deployed from the ISS/MKC to
study the magnetic field in the auroral zone.

It follows a long tradition of magnetosphere studies dating back to
Sputnik-3, which (you will recall) nearly beat Van Allen to the detection of
the eponymous Belts.

There will be a CW telemetry downlink of control/housekeeping data to the
Kolibri-2000 standard on a frequency around 435 MHz.?

I'll post further info if/when I get it. Meanwhile there's a ton of info in
Russian at:

Interesting:
"This experiment provides a comprehensive study of physical processes in
atmospheric lightning discharges. Delivery of the microsatellite in its
working orbit at an altitude of 500 km will be done with a THC "Progress
M-13M" after the completion of the flight of the truck in the station.
According to the developers of the term of active existence of the
spacecraft, "Chibis-M" will be at least one year."

It looks like they plan on raising the Progress after undocking, then
deploying the satellite. This sounds like a new capability for Progress, and
similar to what I've seen discussed for Dragon by SPaceX.

No, but it won't hurt if it's there unless SO-50 is also in view.

As well as measuring electromagnetic parameters of "space weather" in the
spectrum 0.1 - 40 KHz they also have a receiver for the analysis of radio
frequency signals in a frequency band of 26-48 MHz.

I thought in the past they did not raise the progress because they then
would lose the abilety to safely reenter it and risk it becomming a risk
to ISS as it decents.

maybe something changed, if so this would open up options to hook up an
experient to the progress antennas and powerbus after the mission and
raise it's orbit. the progress has very good solar cells and batteries.

This mentions the 145 MHz command uplink and the 435 MHz downlink but no
specific frequencies.

Two antennas met on a roof, fell in love and got married. The ceremony
wasn't much, but the reception was excellent. Since they were a perfect
match, soon they generated harmonics. They wrapped the harmonics in dipoles.
But later the harmonics turned out to be parasitic elements. The true story
-- she was a tri-bander and he felt trapped, so they went on separate beam
headings

I will QSL direct to all contacts that are in my log. I will also upload to
LoTW (as soon as I figure out how to make a new account) and to Eqsl.
No SASE needed. This will take place once I return home in mid February.

Hope to work you on AO-27 and maybe SO-50.

Conference 2012

Dear smallsat / nanosatellite / CubeSat developers,

as you may be aware, obtaining frequency spectrum for nanosatellites
is not always easy. Especially, experimental / technology
proof-of-concept demonstration missions find it increasingly more
difficult to find spectrum in todays crowded bands. Whilst for some
missions, amateur radio spectrum might fit the bill, for others this
is less suitable since the mission does not fully meet the criteria in
order to operate in the bands allocated to the amateur satellite
service. On the other hand, "commercial" or research space allocations
often are not feasible from a budget point of view because of the
large fees involved, and the associated long coordination times may
far exceed the time to design, develop and build a small /
nanosatellite.

Through experience from our customers, and also through our own, ISIS
has identified this problem as a potential long term showstopper for
the emerging nanosatellite market. We will attend the World Radio
Conference later this month as part of the Dutch national delegation.
Although nanosatellite spectrum is not on the agenda of this WRC, we
plan to make use of the opportunity to informally sound the various
opinions on this matter and investigate potential possibilities for
creating a future proof solution ensuring the spectral needs of the
community are met. This is potentially in line with discussions
already going on in for example ITU study group WP7B.

If you have any input on this matter, we would love to hear from you
so we can take this into account during our informal discussions with
the various attendants at the WRC.

Also, if you are present at the WRC yourself, this might be an
excellent opportunity to discuss the topic in person. We might be able
to share some preliminary observations during our presentation at the
European CubeSat Workshop in Brussels later this month.

kind regards,

Wouter Jan Ubbels

Hi!

Besides Clint, is anyone else considering a trip to the hamfest
in Palm Springs?

I went last year, and had fun seeing several satellite operators
out there. I know I missed seeing a couple of people, and don't
want to repeat that again. Maybe this time I can do a better job
of knowing who to look for - and how to contact those who may
be going out there.

It's a 4.5-hour drive for me to get out to Palm Springs, which I'll
probably make into a l-o-n-g day-trip like I did last year. It will
be nice to visit a hamfest as a spectator. :-)

The 30m-tall vehicle has been developed to take payloads up to 1.5 tonnes

The project has been led by Italian industry and is years behind on its
