OK I have a suggestion: a new inexpensive satellite, It will be
designated: *ReNe-Sat-3, *that will be an abbreviation for: *Red Neck

*We will take 2 Woxun HT's, 2 Larsen Mag-mounts, 2**1/4 wave antennas, a
solar panel with charger from Northern Hydraulics and last but not least
about 100 feet of NASCAR 200mph duct tape.

We take the 2 radios set them up for our frequencies, duct tape them
together mount the antennas on the solar panel hook the solar panel up
to the HT batteries and last but not least we send two of the south's
finest: *Astronaut "Bubba & Cooter"* up with the new bird to deploy it.
We will tell Bubba & Cooter that they can have free passes to all the

Nothing heard from ARISSat-1 this AM 15:04 Z Nov 29.. Did anyone hear
signals from 145.930 or 145.950? Pass was very short over Cincinnati this
AM and El only 2 deg..
Will try again Wednesday Nov 30 at 13:43 Z but believe eclipse will prohibit
sat to be active.

All,
With the research and recent "heads up" by Mineo Wakita, JE9PEL, Allan
Biddle, WA4SCA and Clint Bradford, KCLCS it appears there may be only a few
weeks left to receive and experiment with ARISSat-1/RADIOSKAF-V.
On Monday Nov 28 I will be set up to receive voice, CW and SSTV via the
transponder on 145.930 MHz +/- doppler. This will be on the AOS starting
at 14:47 Z pass over Cincinnati. This pass may be too soon after the eclipse
so the sat may not be activated. If it is active, I will try to send a
couple of SSTV R36 transmissions. I will be listening and looking for
others to send also.

Serious question regarding satellite durability.? It seems with HO68, SO67,
and now AO51, the FM satellites are quickly going away.? It also seems that
the older linear counterparts such as AO7, VO52 and FO29 all seem to
continue working properly.??

Is there a design issue with the FM birds that limits the useful lifespan or
is it purely random luck?? Usage rates, etc... play a role?

It seems to happen far too often (even with a small sample size) to be a
fluke.?

You may be making a joke but if we call it "Proof of concept mission for the

reminds me of the Surrey Android phone in space. I wonder what if that worked?

I don't think there is much difference when you look at ALL the failed and
operational sats. BTW, FO-29 is inoperative, HO-68 was both FM and linear,
and you forgot DO-64 in recently failed transponders. AO-27 is 17? years old.

Satellites come and go. I still miss SO-35, RS-10/11, RS-12/13, FO-20,
UO-14, SO-41, AO-10, and of course AO-40. The point is we have to continue
to build and launch new ones, and use what we have at the moment. "Love the
one you're with" for those who remember the song.

Looking in the near term, we have P3E, Kiwisat, Fox-1 and -2, UKube,
FunCube, Turksat-3U, the planned SA-AMSAT cubes, and others that need our
support to get to orbit.

Zach,

Good question. Part of the answer depends on your definitions of "working
properly," and "quickly."

HO-68 and SO-67 have gone away quickly, that is within about a year of
launch. By comparison, AO-51 was launched in 2004, with many years of
service. AO-7 was dead for a couple of decades before returning to life,
albeit with a bit of senility. FO-29 has periods of outages. AO-27, an FM
bird launched almost 20 years ago, remains quirky in scheduling but popular.
SO-50, 10 years old, also gets much use.

When you look at them all, there isn't much correlation between the type
satellite and lifetime. Issues such as the technology used, and the orbit,
are much bigger issues. And as always, Murphy gets the last laugh.

73s,

Alan
WA4SCA

I own 2 IC-910's - Only because I do not need another HF radio. One I
use at my house ops and one is for demo's at hamfests etc.
There is also the older IC-820 and IC-821H that are around. I used one
of those for a long time. It developed a switch problem and sold it so
someone else could get it repaired.
The 847 and 200 are nice radios too. The new IC-9100 seems like a great
radio, however, it is a bit pricey.
Whatever radio you choose, just be sure to know all its operating
characteristics. There are so many whistles and bells that it can be
confusing to an unsure operator.
The older "twin" radios of ICOM and Yaseu radios are still a good way
to operate satellites.

Dee, NB2F

yes, thanks to all control operators here and abroad, but especially those

it has! I've made my first contact (WD9EWK) on AO-51....I will miss it a lot.

I wasn't entirely joking when I suggested something similar previously,
although maybe el-cheapo Chinese handies would be a better bet than some old
GP300s picked out of the Great Big Crate Of Crap in the workshop.

It would work, that's the thing! It would work and you could keep basically
a rucksack full of them flight-ready to get hoisted up to the ISS. When one
fails, they can toss another over the side. Look at how long ARISSat lasted
- now imagine getting an FM cross-band sat up there that costs almost
nothing to replace.

scanners,

programmed for a 2-meter uplink, add an appropriate local oscillator and high
pass filter, feed the resulting signal to the final stage from one of their
old

sideband CB's, and you've got a mode A *LINEAR* satellite!!

We could call it OSCAR 10-4!

Hi!

I will have an AMSAT table at the Superstition Amateur Radio Club's
annual hamfest on Saturday morning, 3 December 2011. This hamfest
is in the southwestern parking lot of Mesa Community College, along
the east side of Dobson Road between Southern Avenue and the US-60
freeway's exit 177 in Mesa AZ. More information about the hamfest
is available at: http://wb7tjd.org/hamfest/

During the half-day event, WD9EWK will be on satellites for on-air
demonstrations. AO-7 should be in mode B, and there will be passes
on SO-50 and VO-52 that I should be able to work. If you hear me on
those passes, please free free to give me - and the hamfest crowd -
a call.

For AO-7 and VO-52, I tend to start out about 10 kHz above the center
of the passband, +/- for other activity and QRM. If I hear no responses
to my CQ calls, I will move around and try to work whoever I hear on the
passband. Maybe even in CW. The hamfest officially starts at 0530 local
time (1230 UTC), and I hope to be set up to work passes starting around
that time.

As with my other satellite activities, I will be happy to confirm QSOs
made during these demonstrations. I will upload the QSOs to LOTW
shortly after the hamfest, and will mail out QSL cards for anyone
wishing to receive one. There is no need to first send me a card and
SASE - just e-mail me the QSO details. If you are in the log, I will
mail a card out to you.

73!

First, no I'm not getting out of the hobby, or satellites for that matter,
I'm just replacing the old, with the new.

I have for sale my Yaesu FT-847 transceiver, it's one of the 'newer' models
that works fine with computer assisted control. It also has the CW filter.
I have the original box, manual and hand mike.

The FIRM price is $925 shipped, CONUS. Contact me directly if you are
interested and would like to see pictures.

It is with a heavy heart I report that AO-51 has ceased transmission and is
not responding to commands. The last telemetry data indicated that the third
of six batteries was approaching failure to short, and observations indicate
the voltage from three cells is insufficient to power the UHF transmitters.
The IHU may continue to be operative. Initial tests with the S band
transmitter were also not positive, although more attempts are in order. We
have tried leaving the satellite in an expected state where if voltages
climb high enough, the 435.150 transmitter may possibly be heard.

The command team will regularly attempt communications with the satellite
over the coming months (and years). There is always the possibility that a
cell will open and we could once again talk to our friend while illuminated.
Thanks to all who helped fund, design, build, launch, command, and operate
AO-51. It's 7 year mission has been extraordinary. Please support AMSAT's
Fox-1 project, and other AMSAT projects worldwide with your time and money.

For the AO-51 Command Team,

73, Drew KO4MA
AMSAT-NA VP Operations
