Eric,

AO-7, FO-29, VO-52 should all work fine for that. I'm just southwest of
Fort Worth and they give me California at least a couple of times a day
(usually more) for 10-20 minutes per pass.

Greetings folks-

I will be one of the operators of the Tesla special event station N3Y
tomorrow (Saturday Nov. 5). We will be operating from a top floor balcony
at the New Yorker hotel in New York City, where Tesla lived for many
years. The balcony faces west and is in grid FN30AS. We plan to be on the
following satellite passes:

AO-27: 2:24 - 2:35 pm (eastern time)
AO-51: 4:34 - 4:44 pm
SO-50: 5:02 - 5:12 pm

We will have a few other operators including Diana Eng, KC2UHB, from Make
Magazine. Our equipment will be a WA5VJB "cheap" yagi, and either a Yaesu
VX8-GR HT or an FT-857. We are only able to do FM voice with this setup.

A special QSL card has been created for the event. Photos of the card and a
bit more information are available here:
http://blog.makezine.com/archive/2011/11/tesla-special-event-ham-radio-station
s-november-5th.html.
There will be a few other Tesla stations on the air tomorrow, but I
think
we are the only one with satellite gear.

We also plan to set up an HF station, although we're not sure if we can put
up an antenna yet. We will have to play that one by ear. If we can get an
antenna up, I expect we will be on 20-10m SSB and CW from about 2:00 to
6:00 pm eastern time, or 1800-2200 UTC.

to bad there cant be an amateur radio payload even a really small one...this
probe should be "longer lived" then most as it should have a constant energy
source...

Wonder why the Europeans are thinking of sending Phase 5A to Mars? It will
probably never fly and almost no hams can be a part of that...so well why
not send it to L2 in the Earth Moon systems...a halo orbit...

Just for the sake of conversation and thinking.? What would the link budget
look like for a transponder on the moon.?

I could decode some M-Cubed telemetry packets last night on an 80 deg
elevation pass (01:20 UTC) :-)

Hi!

I am on the waterfront in SantaCruz CA, grid CM86xx,
for the AO7 pass at 1226 UTC and the AO51 pass
around 1241 UTC. Then it is back to San Jose for
the AMSAT Symposium.

Mike, that's great! You're the first to decode, well done!

Any idea why the beacons show in the list at the bottom all have the same
time stamp?

Congrats, MIke! And special congratulations to the M-cubed student
team! They have to be so happy to see telemetry frames.

Hi!

Thanks to those who were up at the early (for us here on the west
coast) hour for those passes on AO-51 and AO-7 this morning. I
started out on AO-51 just after 1100 UTC from the AMSAT Symposium
site in San Jose (grid CM97bi). After working that pass, I drove
south to Santa Cruz, a small city on the Pacific coast where part
of the city lies in the rarely-heard grid CM86. I worked 3 stations
on the AO-7 pass around 1228 UTC, talked to myself on the AO-51 pass
that came just after AO-7, then drove back to San Jose. Then I worked
a couple stations on AO-7 around 1430 UTC, followed by one quick chat
on VO-52 around 1630 UTC. Thanks for the QSOs this morning, and those
from the past two days I have been in San Jose. Along with the little
bit of radio activity, the AMSAT Symposium has been fun.

Since I know that there are at least a few who would like to work
grid CM86, and I have a bit of free time before I fly home Sunday
evening, I will make a return trip to Santa Cruz and work a pair of
AO-27 passes in the late morning and early afternoon (around 1938 and
2114 UTC - the repeater will start a couple of minutes after those
predicted AOS times). I know that I am near grid boundaries down
there in Santa Cruz, but I am confining my plans to just CM86. I, or
someone else, can work from CM96 or CM87 some other time.

As I have been making QSOs from here, I am uploading them to the
Logbook of the World system. It has been swamped with uploads from
last weekend's CQ WW SSB contest, so it has been taking a little while
for the QSOs - and any QSLs - to show up in there. If you'd like a
QSL card for a QSO with me from San Jose and/or Santa Cruz, please
e-mail me with the QSO details. If you're in my log, I will send out
a card.

73!
