Hi Jan,

FWIW - my reading of the slightly old fashioned English text, is that the
command transmitter is on a frequency around 148MHz, that it uses "two
tones" and that the on board receiver and decoder is capable of
understanding 35 commands. As it happens, the ground segment for the Orbcomm
constellation also uses similar frequencies and "tones", so maybe you
actually heard a ground based device nearby to you, doing its uplinking?

Hi Roger,

The information about a second freq. came from the following document:

http://www.pe0sat.vgnet.nl/downloads/Prospero-Satellite.pdf written by
H.J.H. Sketch.

Have a look at part 3.1

Here a part of that paragraph

"The v.h.f. system is conventional using twin transmitters, each with an
output of 350mW at approximately 136 MHz, and a twin tone digital command
system operating at about 148 MHz which handles the 35 separate commands"

Second graph I placed last night looks like a twin tone, and is received
around 148.010 MHz.

With regards,

Jan - PE0SAT

Thanks Graham,

I have to my knowledge, been searching the entire Internet looking for
information about Prospero, and have no idea what else I can try. The
audio file of the German radio amateur do not help me much further and
therefore have no idea what to expect when Prospero finally transmits
something.

I tryed all kinds of modulations and scanned the band - and + 500 KHz with
137.560 MHz as center freq.

In AM I receive what seems the 57k6 transmittions from ORBCOMM.

I hope the Team that is trying to re-contact prospero have more luck.

Lets all keep in contact and share our findings.

Recently my G5500 azimuth function became very sluggish, then finally
stopped. Removed the Oscar antennas and rotors today, and disassembled the
azimuth rotor, removing the motor from the gear assembly. When I select
"left" or "right" on the control box, the motor turns about 1/4 revolution
then stops and makes a fairly loud 60 Hz buzzing sound. Nice electrical
smell too! So, I figure the motor is shot, but could it be the capacitor
instead? Not sure what the symptoms would be.

(This azimuth motor was last replaced in 2005.)

After I pulled the motor off the gear housing the motor runs in both
directions. But, when I manually rotate the large white nylon gear that the
motor drives that gear binds once every revolution. So, it appears that
nylon gear is worn and needs to be replaced. Anyone have a part number?
Couldn't find the replacement parts section of the Yaesu web page, if one
exists.

Also, I've lost the pictures I took of my last azimuth rotor repair
adventure, so if anyone has some pictures and notes posted somewhere, please
pass along the link.

Tnx,

Art, there is no conflict in you using Amateur Radio as a hobby. The
conflict
is in the exact "meaning" of each of the words in the subject line. The
capitalization of "Is a HOBBY", puts the emphasis on "is" and "hobby", which
for
me says that there is no "other part." I enjoy many hobby parts of Amateur
Radio. But, I also believe that the service part is very important to my
community. I live in Oklahoma where 4 out of 12 months of the year we have
tornadoes as a huge threat, and 2 other months out of the year we have a
chance
for huge ice storms. So, 1/2 of my year is subject to weather events that
may
require some form of support for the Amateur Radio community. It's a big
deal
for the local Tulsa NWS office, that we have built a large UHF linked
repeater
system that covers pretty much all of their responsibility area. They can
get
direct reports from the local EOC offices from their local spotters on their
VHF
nets to confirm things they see on radar to be able to get a "Tornado
Warning"
out ASAP. Every single extra second saves lives.

Thus, in my state, our club and its members can help by keeping equipment
and
agreements in place so that this system can function. When it's not needed
for
storm spotting, it works great for wide area bike ride support. We have
about
10 different significant bicycle events with 100 mile rides in this area
each
year. Those people are staying in good health and enjoying the out doors.
I
like the outdoors too, so going out to help is not a problem for me. I've
just
had family events with my daughters in Marching Band contests for the past 6

years, and that has kept me from being able to support the 3 big events of
the
fall (MS-150, Tulsa Tough, Dam Jam) or the others in between. People are
safer
because we drive the routes and provide transport of food, drink and broken
bikes and riders.

Sure, someone else could do it for pay, but why not exchange some services,
for
a T-Shirt that you can wear around the house, and a good time using Amateur
Radio to talk to your friends, to boot.

Hi Thomas,

Somewhere in the year 2001 I have also been busy with this oscarlator system.
It is very interresting and works quiet well, when you have some experience
in using it.
It looks outdated, but for ham radio it is good enough, and the most
advantage is that is does not use power, cables or fragile parts/software.

On my older website there are still some maps and graphs available, which
might be usefull to other hams.
Please check the link:

Commanding went well, from as far as we could make out. We're not sure
if we're getting anything back, however.

We'll be doing this pass today, hopefully:

There was a brief item about Prospero near the end of the latest Space
Boffins podcast:

http://audioboo.fm/boos/519887-space-boffins-podcast-4

It mentions the involvement of hams in this project.

Tony -

We heard something intriguing after about 14:43:40 UT as the tracking
said the satellite was on it's way off to the north pole.

The 'chuff-chuff' description reminds me of a sound we seem to hear
quite a lot. Quite often it coincides with a pass, though I think we
hear the same (or very similar) during times when Prospero is over the
horizon.

We are going to try the next pass at ~16:00UT if you want to listen in
again. Our new ploy is to wait for the last most opportune moment to
command, as the power _may_ be at it highest (longest charging of
batteries, potentially). So, we'll do short commanding at above 30o el,
and listen.
