I'll second the Keyspan. I've been using them for years. No problems ever. I
have 2 of them.

Unbelievable... according to my Webster's Encyclopedic Unabridged
Dictionary of the English Language, the ISS most certainly IS a satellite!
(the only possible quibble being that it was built in orbit, rather than
launched into orbit...)

Did the ARRL people understand that you were asking about contacts THRU the
ISS, and not WITH the ISS?

Has anyone noticed the mode-B beacon is behaving in an interesting new way?

Just now (over NA 05:00Z today) I recorded it sending a repeating pattern that
didn't seem to be CW, just a pattern of dits numbering 1 5 7 repeating over
and over. The tone quality seemed very "hash", and varied in width somewhat
gradually narrower and wider to about 75Hz a-la aurora.
I have heard this pattern before on a different occasion, but at the time i
didn't know for sure if it was coming from Oscar-7. This time I know for
certain that it was coming from Oscar-7! Also, that time, the sequence was
playing-out very much faster than it was tonight, so fast that I could not
make out the actual sequence, only that it was repeating, probably at least
twice as fast as tonight.

Does this signal have any meaning, or is it just a glitch brought-on by so
many years of radiation?

on an un-related note: I wonder how many hours the electronics have on them?
I doubt any modern satellite can ever touch the record-setting performance of
this old one .

As the old saying goes... they don't make 'em like they used-to! To which I
retort: why not?!? We've learned so much, and yet evidently, so little....

Morning George,

Attached is the text I sent. If they didn't understand that, I don't know
how to make it any clearer. I emphasized the distinction twice, as you can
see. However, the sticking point is with the classification of the ISS, not
how you use it. Or at least how it appears. We have at least one person on
the list who is actively involved with these decisions. I would hope, and
expect, some input on this after FD.

=====================================================

Hi,

I received a question from a local FD committee concerning satellite
operations via the ISS. FD section 7.3.7 mentions the requirements to get
the 100 point bonus being via an "'amateur' radio satellite," while later it
talks about basic QSOs and does not use the phrase "amateur." Later on in
the FD info packet, we find "A QSO with the ISS does not qualify for the
bonus since it is not an Earth-to-Earth contact," but nothing about QSOs
between two ground stations THROUGH the ISS.

The question is about a QSO through, not with, the ISS using either the
voice repeater, or going through the APRS digipeater, which is currently
active. This would be a QSO between two ground stations exactly as you
would through AO-51 for voice or GO-32 or NO-44 for APRS packet, which would
count. The only difference is that the carrier is the ISS, which is not
really an "amateur satellite" even though it carries amateur gear. I have
asked on the usual packet and satellite forums, with seemingly authoritative
but conflicting answers and no definite sources.

So, does a digital QSO THROUGH the ISS digipeater or voice repeater count
for the 100 FD bonus points?

The AMRAD Mobile Comm Van is now on ebay:

It has 40' pneumatic mast and generator, and everything you
would expect from a mobile Comm Van. Its on a 4W drive Ford
chassis.

Its configured for HAM operations with all the TV racks removed,
and the interior carpeted and operating positions installed.

No, according to those who do the counting:

=====================================================================
Hi Alan -

Thanks for the note. As the ISS is NOT a satellite, this would not qualify
for the 100-point bonus. To earn that credit, you will need to make a QSO
through one of the recognized Amateur Radio satellites.

Have fun at Field Day this year!

It is a goofy ruling, but I find not new. Just widely unknown, because it
apparently makes so little sense.

If you have DOCUMENTED evidence, not hearsay or past usage, to get this
fixed, I would appreciate your giving me a reference. I am not being
argumentative here, but that is what would be required to fix this,
especially on short notice.

Gentlemen-

At the request of several in the satellite community, I spent some time
last evening reviewing data presented to me concerning my ruling that
the ISS would not count for satellite QSO credit during Field Day.

After reviewing the data last evening, I have come to the conclusion
that my first ruling was incorrect; The ISS is indeed eligible for
satellite QSO credit during Field Day.

Please forward this to the appropriate forums. I hope everybody has fun
this weekend.

Bob,

No question that this issue is something which needs to be revisited and
clarified, with the input of the AMSAT users, over the next year. For now,
I will take the answer to mean that the ISS will be treated as any other
orbiting amateur relay package, regardless of where it is bolted. And
certainly for the 100 point bonus, which question started all this.

BTW, good to work you at W3ADO this AM. My antenna decided to swing 360,
and the phone rang from someone at the FD committee at the same time, so I
could not get back to you.

I tried to be diligent and do my searching before asking this
question, but with no search ability on amsat-bb and google coming
up near empty..... here goes!!!

Are there any "popular" designs for AO51 antennas? I have my converters
(3 of them actually, a drake, a direc broadbcast TV converted with teftape
and a kit built down east microwave D/C) leftover from AO40 days. But
I seem to have dismantled or lost or sold or something to my dish I used.
I have various dishes from directv sized to starband sized. Is there
any particular feed people are finding to work better than others?
Is there getting to be a "common" setup for 2.4? Thanks!! -James KI0KN

This is the final call for speakers/papers for the 23rd Amsat-UK
Colloquium which will be held at Surrey University, Guildford, Surrey,
U.K., from Friday 25th July to Sunday 27th July 2008.

Details of this and previous events can be found at:
http://www.uk.amsat.org.

Amsat-UK invite speakers, about amateur radio space and associated
activities, for this event. They are also invited to submit papers
for the "Proceedings" document which will be published at the same
time but printed papers are not mandatory. We normally prefer
authors to present talks themselves rather than having someone else
give them in the authors' absence. We also welcome
"unpresented" papers for the Proceedings document.

Offers of talks should be submitted as soon as possible; the final
date for full documents to be received is July 16th 2008 in order
that the "Proceedings" document be available to participants.

Submissions should be sent *ONLY* to G4DPZ, via the following routes:

Internet e-mail: david dot johnson at blackepper do co dot uk

I am putting together a 436CP30. I received it this week from M Square. They
sent 12 1/2 inch elements for the first director. After checking with M Square
I have cut off 1/4 inch per their antenna dimensions. I just wanted to alert
anyone who might also have recently acquired this antenna. Easy enough mistake
to remedy.

Dear Cubesat Community,

At Stanford, we are conducting a survey on global ground station availability,
and we need your help! If you have a ground station, would you please fill
out our survey (~5minutes)? It will ask you about station locations and the
characteristics of the antennas (type and frequency). The survey is located
at:

URL: http://ssdl.stanford.edu/gs_survey/
User: gs
Password: stanford

Please provide input by July 7, 2008 if possible. We will make the results
available later this summer. We will be using the data for research on
improving throughput through networks such as GENSO.

Thanks for your time. If you have any questions or comments, please send me
an email.

Best regards,

--James
