Hello,
I will be operating, as W2GSB, from the historic Fire Island Lighthouse,
FN30, for the Great South Bay Amateur Radio Club tomorrow, 8-20 and 8-21st,
the first pass will be with SO-50, 16:30 U and all the subsequent FM passes.
A special certificate is available, mail to W2GSB Lighthouse, PO Box 1356,
West Babylon, NY 11704, thank you. Do not send envelope, club will supply.

As ARISSat1 now is opertional in high power at a decent hour in the evening
here I have been making a few attempts at SSB transponder operation.
I have 2x10 turn helix atennas and a 100 watt brick amplifier which
would give me an ERP in the order of 4KW on the 70 cm uplink.
The Aug 19 23:55 UTC pass had a max el of 78 degrees. For some
reason the satellite turned off and on or switched between high and low
power
several times during the pass. The transponder downlink background noise
as it went to high power was clearly noticeable and the S meter went up
from S1 to S2. The 145.950 FM voice was 10 over S9.
With 100 watts SSB out my 2 m downlink sig at peak went up to S4
and was Q5 but still with some noise. Reducing the uplink to 50 watts
produced a noticeable reduction of the downlink into the noise.
On two previous passes I was able to detect that another operator
had gotten my call OK but I was unable to get theirs as their signal
was well into the noise.
I have not attempted CW which of course will give a much better
result.

Thanks for the ideas, Mike. I am using FM for sure, and no I was never able
to receive ARISSat-1 with the stock antenna in the shack.
I'll certainly try removing the duplexer. And thank for the info about the
roofing material. I don't have aluminum siding, but I don't know about that
kind of roofing material. The roof was replaced recently, is all I can tell
you at the moment. I'll also try outside.
Thanks again

Make sure your receive mode for frequency 145.950 is FM on your
Kenwood F6A handheld.
?
Before you?upgraded with additional hardware could you receive
ARISSat-1 signals using the stock antenna inside your shack?
?
If you can, the next step is to?remove the Diamond 2m/70cm
duplexer as it might be blocking the amplified signal from your SSB?
2m pre-amp.
?
If that does not?help, then?it could be that?the satellite signal are being
degraded more than 75 percent or blocked entirely by the orient strand
board (OSB) radiant barrier roof sheathing which is backed with a
specially designed aluminum foil. The same goes if your dwelling
exterior is fabricated with aluminum siding.
?
It that is the case, then your only hope is to mount the antenna outside.

Hello Nader.
I heard the sat go into eclipse over Europe earlier in the evening. It
appeared to shut down immediately it passed into darkness. The battery does
not appear to have any capacity left.
Perhaps all AMSAT spacecraft should be designed to operate on solar panels
alone after the battey fails. We are very lucky with ARISSat-1, not so
fortunate with AO-40
Regards
David

One thing I've discovered which makes things go more smoothly is to reduce
the minimum Doppler tuning interval.
I am using SatPC32 V12.8a. There are two parameters in the CAT menu -- the
Speed which I changed to 5x (which is not sticky) and the minimum Doppler
tuning step for SSB which I set to zero (it will be sticky if you remember
to click Store).
With these two changes, although the Doppler correction may drift off, it
does so very smoothly, which I assume allows the decoding of the BPSK data
to be more accurate.
