Congratulations to the entire ARISSAT 1 team. The spacecraft works, enough
said.

When the SDX was dreamed up we were thinking P3E, but I don't care when it
was flown or whose design it was, the reasons for the concept have now been
clearly demonstrated. On ARISSAT 1, we have several different waveforms
and a transponder all successfully executed in a transponder with IF
interface derived from the Flex Radio SDR-1000 (QSD and QSE). The
experiment has shown that you can, in software, on a very small
microprocessor accomplish the complex set of operations to generate several
waveforms, add them up, send them to a D/A and allow it to be the baseband
excitation of a transmit chain. HIP HIP HOORAY for the job well done by
the ARISSAT SDX software team.

This is overall, a job well done. All of us would have preferred to have
P3E in orbit now, generating the finest ever HELAPS based transponder, but
again, using the QSD/QSE from Flex (as adapted by Howard Long).

Congrats to Drew on apparently being the first (on purpose) 70cm photons
through the thing and good going David.

?
ArissSat was designed for this environment and apparently it survived just
fine.

Bob, WB4APR
Huh ? Sorry but maybe you have another ARISSAT-1. The ARISSAT-1 I was
looking forward to had a linear transponder so I can actually use it as a
HAM Radio Operator and have QSO's with other HAM Radio Operators in its
footprint, not as a teacher having kids listen to pre-recorded messages.
?
Don't get me wrong, the whole education thing and the receiving of sstv pics
etc. is fantastic. And its great to see this happen. But IMHO that was not
the main purpose of this sat. The purpose was to have another sideband bird
for Hams to enjoy. And that does not happen now. So calling this mission a
'success' is pretty ironic.
?
But the worst part is that this didn't need to happen at all ! Although the
crew handled the sat way to rough, the UHF antenna probably didn't even
break off during the space walk. It probably broke off in the months before
inside the ISS, or has been simply forgotten to be attached or even have
been screwed up by the ground crew when they loaded the sat for transport to
the ISS.
?
I've worked for the European Space Agency for 8 years and I am telling you
such a major screw-up would have never ever happened there. There are
procedures and policies for everything. Everything is designed, spelled out,
simulated, reviewed and double-tripple checked over and over. Thats what you
have to do, when you operate in such an environment. Nothing, absolutely
nothing, is left to chance, interpretation or worse improvisation. And that
is why Ariane?5 is the most powerfull, most reliable and?most successful
launch vehicle on the planet today. You are dealing with millions of dollars
worth of hardware, or even worse, peoples lives depend on the proper
planning and handling of missions. It doesn't matter if it is a small ham
satellite build by volunteers or a multi-billion dollar space telescope: The
principals remain the same. And if everybody follows the proper developed
procedures things like that simply don?t happen.
?
It would have been sad, but perfectly o.k. if the sat would have been
damaged by some orbiting space debris, or some unforseen x-ray radiation or
something like that. Because those are the risks one takes in space, and
some things can not be predicted and/or avoided. But this damage has been
done by simple carelessness and ignorance.
?
I wasn't actively involved in the project, as I came 'to late to the party'.
But I was very excited and seriously thought about offering my knowledge and
expertise (in Software Engineering) to project Fox. But after this I have my
doubts. Spending countless hours, blood and sweat to build something just to
see it being destroyed by an astronaut who either doesn't care or doesn't
know better ? And then still have to be grateful for it ? No Thanks.
?

Well said Bob. Even if the 70 CM antenna was still rolled up, I still had a
much stronger signal on the 400 MHZ band than? on 2M, when they were doing
the test earlier this week. Enjoy the bird and get your kids to listen when
it comes by. That's the point. So everyone take a breath and have some fun
with ARISSAT-1.

Everyone should relax.

We built PCSAT-2 that was also deployed on the outside of ISS back in 2006.
The requirements for any kind of such EVA hardware are clearly spelled out
by NASA since they (and anyone who thinks about it) realizes that carrying
ANYTHING by hand or on a tether in ZERO G is going to get banged around like
an ape with a suitcase.

It is na?ve to assume otherwise.

So PCSAT-2 (and I assume Arissat) was built to be kicked, banged, hit,
dropped, stepped on, and even whizzed on (ISS water releases).? The forces
were specified to include the 300lb impact of the astronauts foot (man and
suit) anywhere and everywhere on the object.

The live video proved how realistic these design requirements are.

So relax.? What you saw is man working in space.? Like making sausage, it
ain't pretty... but its what the laws of physics require when heavy objects
float.

ArissSat was designed for this environment and apparently it survived just
fine.

If an antenna is damaged i think it could be the UHF. I was able to hear
myself in the short linear transponder window but at this level no

sustain QSO is possible.

The DATA/CW and the FM signal where booming here near S9. I can hear the
transponder noise but are just over the noise level

I will check and try some recording of the FM messages.

Hi all,
Apologies - I may have caused the confusion in my recent report on hearing
the satellite this morning in Wales -UK.
I had the ISS on my mind with using it with using it as a source for
tracking ARISSat-1 and posted an incorrect frequency. It was of course
operating on the correct published frequency.
Put it down to "age" or my pleasure of having such success.
Sincere Apologies to all.

Since ARISSat-1's first three passes over the USA have occurred in darkness,
it appears it is in intermittent mode. This is as Gould Smith stated in his
post titled "ARISSat-1 Deployed !". That is, "ARISSat-1 will ... go to Low
power (intermittent) mode when in eclipse".

On the 145.950 MHz FM downlink, intermittent mode appears to mean about 45
seconds ON followed by 120 seconds OFF. Presumably, other signals from
ARISSat-1 follow a similar schedule. I'll check this when I get a chance.

That being said, ARISSAt-1 was heard loud and clear on all of its first
three passes over northeastern USA near Binghamton, NY. Specifically, the
04:20, 05:54, and 07:31 UTC passes.

Can't wait until the 09:08, 10:45, and 12:21 UTC passes for my location when
ARISSat-1 will enter full sunlight and switch to continuous operation.

Listening to my HDSDR/FUNcube dongle recording of the 0555 UTC pass of
ARISSat-1 from Indiana (EN60), I can clearly copy KO4MA (EL88) calling CQ on
the U/v transponder! The transponder works!

ARRISat-1 was in low-power mode (40 seconds on, 120 seconds off).

Hi Jim, KQ6EA

Well said Jim ! Considering all problems occurred AO40 was the best
satellite ever made by AMSAT and I agree with you ARISSat-1 is another
shoe box in space that is using the Amateur Radio Satellite frequencies
for a free downlink but not made for a possible easy two way Amateur
Satellite Communications.

ARISSat-1/Kedr continues to work well with good reports coming in from
around the world.

Good SSTV images submitted to the SSTV database, even earth and cosmonaut
images, check out http://www.amsat.org/amsat/ariss/SSTV/

The transponder is working! Drew, KO4MA was successful in easily working
through the transponder with a 1 W uplink

BPSK-1000 Telemetry & Experiment data is coming into the telemetry server,
check out the mobile app www.arissattlm.org/mobile

The satellite is warmer than we expected, we will continue to monitor this.

Very good first day.

I heard the CW beacon at 1217 UTC with a strong (min. S5) but noisy signal.

The FM downlink wasn't as strong as the beacon and was much noisier
(possibly from local interference), fading about once per second. However,
I did hear a child's voice giving part of the satellite's ID, but that was
about it.

Just heard it! The messages and the SSTV sound, but lots of fading in and
out, but using a vertical AR-2 for reception. Anywway it sounds strong. Oh!
and heard Wesley's message!

What a signal! I have to admit, I didn't think it would be as good as it
was. When ARISSat-1 was at 35 degrees, the signal was full-quieting.
Decent SSTV pix received as well. Totally awesome!

And, for those with iOS devices, iPhone, iPad, iPod that can download apps, if
you will install the "Gallery" app from apple, you can add a gallery using
'clintbradford' as the username, and have all of those pictures handy on your
device to show and talk about.

Hello,

Are there keps for this bird yet? So far I?ve been listening using the ISS
keps in SATPC32 but eventually this wont work. What will its official
designation in the downloadable keps files be?

Also, do we have a ?final answer? on the UHF side? Is there an antenna or not?
