Could you hear any receiver noise in the transponder passband?

ARISSat is still a little more than that. It's a good engineering test
for a new spacecraft bus that was primarily built by AMSAT volunteers
and who can apply that design and experience for future spacecraft.
There are a number of new amateur technologies on ARISSat-1, and aside
from the transponder input they all seem to be working.

Since we don't have video of the actual deployment we don't know how it
was turning at release.

But remember the physics of this. Any body that isn't absolutely rigid
will eventually settle down to a stable spin about the axis with the
greatest moment of inertia. That configuration minimizes kinetic energy
while still conserving angular momentum.

Although ARISSat-1 doesn't have any nutation dampers that I'm aware of,
the slightest flexing of the structure, the antenna (singular), even
tiny movements of the cables inside, will dissipate energy and convert
any complex tumbling motion into a smooth spin about the preferred axis.
That axis includes the antenna, so it shouldn't fade due to spinning.

So it may simply take some time to settle down into a stable spin
without frequent deep fading.

Phil

Latest UK pass 06.08utc could just hear my own CW using 50W to a collinear.

Excellent!

No go with SSB though but hardly surprising I suppose given my antenna.

Now *THIS* is the best news I've heard all day since the deployment and
initial reception reports!!

Perhaps the transponder is disabled in low-power mode during night passes?

Remember this spacecraft is carrying a silver-zinc battery. While
nominally rechargeable, this type of battery has a very short cycle life
usually specified in the single digits. This is the reason for the
conservatism in eclipse operation. Without that battery, the computer
will regularly reset in eclipse and the spacecraft won't behave nearly
as well as we'd like.

Hi all,
Listened for ARISSat-1 at 0605 hrs GMT here in Wales -UK.
This pass was a low angle but I had no problems in hearing the
transmissions on 145.825 Mhz, the satellite sounded very healthy and the
voice and
SSTV very clear indeed.
"My sincere congratulations" to all concerned and of course to all whom
gave the support to enable the project to proceed. "Amateur Radio " is
well spoken for in its voice announcement.

This morning at 04:37 UTC a good pass over Zagreb, Croatia. VHF / UHF linear
transponder has worked fairly well. I heard my own signal with the strength
55-56. There is relatively strong noise in the linear transponder receiver.
There was no one to answer to my CQ. Received two SSTV images (SSB and FM).
The voice messages are of excellent quality. Telemetry is a good all modes
(voice, CW and BPSK).
See you on ARISSat-1

Hi Phil,

The first few passes I concentrated on telemetry.
On my last 18 deg pass I was copying myself through the transponder but with
a poor signal. On my just completed pass I was getting good signals back
from the transponder but with a strong 6 second polarization fade.
The satellite went into eclipse halfway through the current pass and went to
its on/off mode.

Robot-36 picture received but vey noisy on 145950, 0436 is the timestamp.

I am confused by the -bb reports of FM signals - I think 145825 and 437550
are relays from the ISS and therefore I'd expect them to be far stronger. ??

BEGINS
New satellite to commemorate first space flight
permalink email story to a friend print version Published: 03 August, 2011,

Two Russian cosmonauts have left the International Space Station for a
six-hour spacewalk to mark the 50th anniversary of the first-ever manned
space flight by Yuri Gagarin with the launch of the unique microsatellite.
?The cosmonauts will spend about six hours outside the ISS and for the first
time ever computerized Orlan-MK spacesuits with liquid crystal displays will
give advice and instructions in case of emergency situations, such as
increased oxygen consumption.
During the spacewalk, the cosmonauts will launch a microsatellite made
entirely by Russian university students.
The satellite ? which is dubbed ?Kedr? (cedar) after Yuri Gagarin?s call
sign ? will be broadcasting greeting messages from outer space in 50
different languages to mark the 50th anniversary of the first-ever manned
space flight.
The cosmonauts will also install laser communication equipment on the
outside of the Russian segment of the ISS. However, it does not mean
high-speed internet will be available in the Russian segment, as long as
?the new optical equipment is intended primarily to transfer science video
to enhance the efficiency of the scientific activity of the cosmonauts,? the
head of the extravehicular activity department of RSC Energia, Aleksandr
Polishchuk said.
With the US Shuttle program shutting down last month, Russia is currently
the only nation able to send people to the stars.

Two Russian cosmonauts, Alexander Samokutyayev and Sergei Volkov, completed
their 6-hour spacewalk on Thursday with a 40-minute delay and returned to
the Russian segment of the International Space Station (ISS).

They carried out a manual launch of a mini-satellite and installed new
stream video equipment on the station's outer surface.

This was the first spacewalk for Samokutyayev and the third for his
colleague Volkov.

The launch of the Kedr mini-satellite, designed to transmit greeting
messages in 17 languages, Earth photos and telemetry data from its service
systems, was delayed after the cosmonauts discovered that one of its two
antennas was missing, but they nevertheless launched the satellite with only
one antenna.

The cosmonauts also installed three containers with microorganisms and
mushroom spores on the Pirs docking compartment to study their influence on
materials used in spacecraft construction.

At the end of their spacewalk, the Russians took pictures holding photos of
the first cosmonaut Yury Gagarin, spacecraft designer Sergei Korolyov and
Soviet astronautic theory pioneer Konstantin Tsiolkovsky with Earth in the
background.

UK Pass 07.45utc.

Last pass of the day at only just 10dg elevation and I managed to capture 2
telemetry frames and 2 Kursk frames amongst all the local crud and noise.

Good to get the whole set first time round, great fun.

Thanks guys.

Actually, none of the stills are really as good as the video they were
taken from. The satellite is moving around and the changing camera
perspective better shows the antenna connector sleeve in 3-D. The
lighter object inside the sleeve appeared to be about 1cm below the top
end of the sleeve. It also seemed to have a 3-pointed cross section,
almost like a miniature Oscar-10 shape. Having never seen the flight
hardware, and having seen pictures only of the construction of the
antenna, not the dummy load/terminator, I couldn't decide for sure what
I was seeing.

I took these shots later in the EVA when they were asked to look again
at the 70cm antenna and show it on camera.

Heard the FM transmission of ARISSat -1 during the 0555 UTC (0155 EST) pass

3-el tape measure Yagi. I am pretty sure a rubber duck antenna is more than
