ARISSat is missing an antenna and has been
returned to the airlock. Discussions are
under way as what to do next. Possible
ARISSat would be deployed as is.

Stay tuned...

Looks like an antenna is possibly missing, I could see only one. And they
have discussed that

Hmmm. Was that a problem with the switches, or a missing antenna on the
opposite side to the 2m ?

I heard the ground controllers warn them about not damaging the solar
panels. Yes, it looked like handling was pretty rough. Instead of the
choreographed/practiced movements of other EVA's I've watched, this one
seemed like they were trying to figure out what to do as they went along!

Maybe they need to put another widget on the AMSAT website to take

I noticed the rough handling as well. Exciting video. Could be the
light weight and any touch can send it spinning. I also saw the
missing antenna? Went on to look for pix of the satellite and only
the SSTV and patch of the ARRISat-1 shows an antenna. Tried to look
for any pix with the bottom antenna, however, did not find one with it
on. Maybe someone that has taken pix of it assembled can find how it
was supposed to look...
Seems ashame to not launch it today, however, maybe they can find the
antenna and make sure it will be on for next EVA opportunity. Maybe
they can jury rig an antenna on it. After all, it doesn't have to be
that strongly attached. No drag...
Anyway, a sad day.
Dee, NB2F

As expected, nothing was heard over West Malaysia from ARISSsat-1 but
130.167 MHz FM was very strong with conversations in Russian.

I am not familiar with the construction of the satellite, but, in the
pictures I saved, I can see the black, cylindrical object attached to the
'bottom' side of the satellite, smaller than the one on top....but unlike
the one on top, there seems to be no whip extending from it. I assume this
is the attachment point of the 70cm antenna and that there should be a whip
extending from it. Maybe it is there, but I couldn't see it.

NOT REALLY!

During EVA when unwrapping the satellite the Russians observed one of the
antennas of ARISSsat was missing!

The next EVA will take place in 2012!

HI,
it seems that the missing antenna is the one for the 70cm band.

I heard that the deployment speed would be of about 1 m/s (deltaV)...
the speaker also spoke about a 30? "space window" which should be used to
deploy, anybody has more details?

Thanks and 73s

Tough decisions.

ARISSat-1 was taken to the ISS on a Progress vessel with 50-ohm terminations
(dummy loads) installed on both antenna connectors. At the ISS, the
terminations were to be removed and the 2M (long transmit) antenna and 70 cm
(short receive) antenna installed. The ARISSat-1 tests used a coax cable to
an ISS external antenna connected to the 2M connector on the top of the
satellite.

The video of the spacewalk clearly showed the 2M antenna installed.

>From a very brief head-on video shot, it appeared that the 70 cm antenna
wasn't installed. I don't remember the size of the terminator, so I can't
say if the 70 cm terminator was present, or if the antenna had been
installed but broken, or if the connector wasn't terminated. My *guess* is
that the terminator is still installed.

If launched as is, I think the downlink on 2M should work with the telemetry
(BPSK-1000, CW, FM voice recordings, and SSTV). What won't work is the U/v
transponder.

Watching the video made it very clear how hard it is to handle the satellite
"carefully". So the risk (specifically mentioned by one of the cosmonauts)
is that the solar panels won't survive taking the satellite back into the
ISS to install the antenna and launch another day.

One other potential scenario would be to remove the 70 cm terminator (if it
is attached to the connector) and launching today. There is a *slim* chance
that high-powered ground stations might be able to be heard by the U/v
transponder.

Tough decisions.

Apparently, an antenna went missing so it's not known if ARISSat will be
transmitting properly. Deployment might occur later during this EVA pending
a decision from mission control.

Looks like an antenna is possibly missing, I could see only one. And they
have discussed that

We are waiting on a decision whether or not to deploy the satellite as is,
without the 70cm antenna. If, in fact, the 70cm antenna is missing, there
would of course be no communications possible through the transponder.
Translation: one more piece of space junk that is useless to the amateur
radio community that helped pay for it!
I guess I shouldn't be too upset. I'm sure there are many others that have
much more invested than I do.
