We are looking for stations to make early reception reports (1520Z-1800Z)
after the ARISSat-1/Kedr release on Wednesday.
It looks like southern South America, very southern South Africa, followed
by southeast Asia should be the first areas to receive the signals.
The satellite is scheduled to be deployed from the ISS during EVA-29 on
Wednesday 3 Aug around 1507Z. There is a 15 minute delay after the safety
switches are all thrown before the transmitter turns on.
First signals should be transmitted shortly after 1520Z.
Please send your reception reports to the amsat-bb@xxxxx.xxx . Title your
email - ARISSat-1 reception report
Alaska and the western US should get a good pass around 1620Z. The eastern
US will have to wait until around 0416Z on the 4th to hear the satellite.

Gould, WA4SXM

Sorry to re-re-re-post this - but we're in a new month on the system ... and
further apologies if the answer is really obvious ...
Do the ARISS powers-that-be know WHY some had tremendous success hearing
the WONDERFUL pre-recorded messages from kids on 145.95 last weekend -
while some passes had "empty carrier" or nothing on 145.95?
I experienced both phenomena - just a "keying up" and dead silence for a
few seconds at 1:03AM PDT Sunday morning, and then wonderful, full kids'
messages during the 2:38AM PDT pass.

Hi Clint,
Are you sure it was a totally empty carrier? There was one YouTube posting
from someone (I forget who - across the pond, I believe), who recorded the
entire pass. I had the fan on in the Shack, so it was a little noisy, but I
didn't hear anything the entire recording. Then I noticed the S-meter in
the radio's display poked up a couple of notches and realized that the audio
level was simply very low. Sure enough, turned the audio all the way up and
I heard voices.
Perhaps the audio levels are not the same for all recordings? (Hopefully
it's not an intermittent in the satellite...)

The real problem at this point is format. The sstv software uses an odd
encoding. I can't find any converters.(from .wav to .mmv)

Mineo, JE9PEL - released in Mike DK3WN Satblog - voice files received
from past tests ARRISat-1. In the files we can hear the voice of Wesley in
Castilian, KP4WES - boy from Puerto Rico. He's only 12 years, and is always
active on AO-51 and VO-52. Very cool.

NASA TELEVISION TO BROADCAST SPACE STATION SPACEWALK
HOUSTON -- Two cosmonauts will conduct a six-hour spacewalk on Wednesday,
Aug. 3, to continue outfitting the Russian segment of the International
Space Station. NASA Television will broadcast the spacewalk beginning at 9
a.m. CDT.?
Expedition 28 Russian Flight Engineers Sergei Volkov and Alexander
Samokutyaev will install laser communications equipment and replace
experiments on the Zvezda service module. They also will retrieve a
rendezvous antenna, relocate a boom structure to aid future spacewalks and
deploy a small satellite equipped with an amateur radio transmitter and a
student-built experiment.?
The duo will wear Russian Orlan spacesuits and will emerge from the Pirs
docking compartment airlock at about 9:30 a.m. The spacewalk will be the
third for Volkov, who performed two spacewalks as Expedition 17 commander in
2008. This will be the first spacewalk for Samokutyaev.?

This is a great resource. However, the documentation suggests that a
demo WAV file will be posted to http://www.arissattlm.org , and I've
not been able to find it. Might I suggest that the file
https://svn.sarpeidon.net/viewvc/suitsat2/ground_station_software/ARISSatTLM/i
nstall-staging/Sample_ARISSat_Recording1.WAV
be posted with the software if no other demo can be provided? Such a
file obviously is quite helpful in debugging a station.

I think I figured this out. Everything is wired correctly (see below). The
issue is that the recorder has an extremely wide dynamic range,
handling line level to mic input levels. It appears that the "AGC" looks at
both channels, and adjusts both based on the "loudest" --- so
if I have a large audio line input on one side (R), and a small mic input on
the other (L) , the gain is set for the line and suppresses the mic into the
noise.
If I turn the volume down on the HT audio, the mic input comes up out of the
noise.
So I need a better, adjustable "pad" for the line level audio coming from
the HT (better than the attenuating patch cable I am using)-- I was
thinking of a "pot" divider with the input on the outer terminals, and the
output off of the center pin--- should I use a big (100K) or small-value
(100) pot? Linear, audio, or log taper?

Subject: Pin assignments on a stereo mic input?
One more for today... I am using a stereo digital recorder for logging. It
has a stereo 3.5mm mic socket.
I am using a "attenuating" patch cable from the HT audio into a "stereo
splitter" plugged into the mic input
(it has a stereo plug, and two mono sockets --- tip and base, and ring and
base). The other side of
the splitter has a mic. So the intent it to put the HT into one channel,
and the external mic (recording me)
into the other channel, when recording.
I am only hearing the HT audio on playback. I have a feeling that the plug
"base" connection is not ground --
it is on the ring or tip.
Any one have or know the signal assignment on a recorder mic jack? base,
ring , and tip? I would assume
it would also match the assignment of the mic input of a PC (if you know
that)?
