As some of you may recall, I've been doing my best to make and try various
stationary antennas. It's been tough testing them since not many birds seem
active, particularly AO-51 which I usually heard well. Can anyone tell me if
AO-51 was functioning during the pass at around 16:30 EDT on 7/18. I haven't
heard a peep out of it but have heard a few other birds.

Rick,
I did here AO-51 on that pass. I got in late on it. Footprint was not
on L48 anymore. I did make some calls hoping for someone in Alaska.
I did hear some Russian stations and called them but their signal was
fading in and out. I have worked them before and we have exchanged
QSL cards. Anyways it was functioning ok.

Are there any AMSAT folks with a D700, D710 or D72 and the desire to drive
to a mountain top on Sunday?
We have two major holes in our 2000 mile Golden Packet attempt to get an
APRS message from Maine to Georgia. Maybe someone in AMSAT likes to do a
drive-up mountain this weekend?
The Southern End is missing, and the key link from Mt Washington just had a
radio failure. Plus there are some other weaknesses. SO here are the
opportunities!
Mt Washington, NH
High-Point, NJ
Lookout Mountain, TN
Springer Mountain, GA
We operate only from NOON to 4 PM only (Sunday 24 July), less if everyone
gets their act together and we are successful with the first 2000 mile
packet ever...
There is also an attempt along the Pacific Coast as well. They have some
opportunitites as well. See:

FYI All,
You have one more chance for EN63 this afternoon 7/18 via AO-51 @
22:07z. I'll be looking for west coast stations & anyone who would
like to confirm the grid that I haven't worked yet.
Again, if you would like a QSL, please let me know, no QSL or SASE is
required!

If you are listening on 435.300, that is the problem. AO-51 is operating on
145.880 up/ 435.150 down.

I think you will like the turnstile Moxon. I recently, last week, fabricated
one for receiving Russian navigation satellites on 149.940 to 150.030 MHz
and was very pleased. It replaces a commercial QFH I had in my attic. I used
3/4" wide aluminum straps for the elements, a 90 degree hybrid coupler
instead of the phasing network, and held the ends of the elements in
alignment with 3/4" wide strips of bare G-10 printed circuit boards.

Ellis,
Alan Kung, BA1DU and CEO of CAMSAT was one of the speakers at the Dayton
AMSAT Forum. He reported that HO-68 is suffering from a bad relay or relay
driver that is used to switch from the beacon to the transponder. The
likelihood of recovery is low, but not zero.
Here is the explanation from Alan's slide. These are exact quotes, not my
interpretation:
-- The current situation is the transponders will be difficult to switch the
RF PA from beacon mode to transponder mode
-- The RF relay or its drive circuit is failing, it is a stick relay.
Probability of success of switch is probably a few tenth
-- On the other hand, up to now the both solar and lithium-ion batteries are
in very nice condition
-- The exhibitions of the thermal-control, onboard flight computer and TT&C
are also excellent.
