Heads up this August 5-7: Be sure to look for W1AW/5 operating on all
available satellites from Taos, New Mexico. http://www.2011convention.org

I plan to bring my mobile ground station and do demos throughout the
duration of the Convention. More information can also be found on my QRZ

I've been able to fit up a pre-amp to my Arrow. I have a ARR 432 switched
pre-amp with it's own battery pack on the 432-side of the arrow to hear
better on low (<10 deg) passes. Still using the FT-530 HT with a headset.

There were two low Atlantic passes this morning, one each on AO-27 and
AO-51. From FN42IO I heard EA1QS on the first (5 deg), and worked a GW0 on
the second -- 3050 miles, on a 8 deg pass.

Went back out later in the afternoon for a mid-US pass, and low and behold,
there's a San Diego station on (2550 miles)... listen to the last 10 secs
of this recording for the punch line:

Hi Bill,

I use this exact same setup. I originally bought the preamp for mobile use,
but I have enjoyed using it for the Arrow as well. I carry it in a camera
bad (that fits it perfect) on my waist powered by 8AA batteries inside thee
pack. How did you mount yours? I don't use a tripod, but I am curious if
you have a better way to mount it on the Arrow itself.

Nice work on the low passes! AO51 is one of the easiest birds to work at
low elevations - especially when it is putting out high power. I have heard
(and made contacts on) 3 degree passes before - without the preamp! Give it
a listen!

Mervyn,

I've looked though my logs and here are the stations I worked in some of the
states you need. Maybe you could try to contact them via QRZ and arrange a
schedule:

UT: AG7A
NM: N7RP
AR: AJ5C

Anyone in N. America up early for AO-7 Mode B try? On the next pass
starting about 0925Z, my footprint will extend deep into N. America,
Minnesota to the west and Georgia to the south. Look for me on the top
portion of the passband, 145.959 or so. Signals were very strong on the
last pass, and I copied the bird from my hilltop QTH to -0.5 degrees.

Has the AO-7 orbit shifted higher? I don't recall such big windows to N.
America last year.

All,

During the coming week (July 16th - 23rd) I will be available to
operate from EN63 via FM satellite for those who still need to confirm
this grid. While not considered rare, EN63 is has not been commonly
active. I have operated from this grid several times over the past
years and there are a few locals that operate from this grid from time
to time. I do not plan to be active other than by request, so please
email me if you would like to make the attempt to work a station in
EN63. I will not likely be available for all pass opportunities, but
we should be able to work something out if you email me within the
next couple of days.

73,

Doug KD8CAO

Ps. There is no need to QSL or send SASE for our contact when I'm
operating portable. If you email me for a sked and/or with a QSL
request, I will gladly send a QSL card to confirm our contact in
return.

I had my first 3 contacts on AO-27 this afternoon shortly after noon central
time with a Baofeng UV-3R (2 watts) with an antenna based on a design by
Kent Britain -- WA5VJB I built. In a rush to get away from my apartment
complex I forgot to bring my digital audio recorder and I cannot remember
their call signs. One had XX in it and one had K8 in it. Did any hear us
and can help me out? Wow, this was a lot of fun. Thanks.
