The rules are in effect to prevent possible interference to the
aircraft navigation aids and communications equipment.
The potential for mix produces from numerous consumer grade
electronic devices emitting part 15 compliant RF is just to
unpredictable for the FAA to allow these possible RF sources to be
energized during the landing and take off phase of flight.
If the interference were to occur at a higher flight level, the pilot
has longer to respond and get the interfering emitter shut down.
During landing and take off the reaction time is just too long to
allow the devices to be turned on.

It is not a matter of general EMI.
It is a matter of mix products from unknown emitters causing on
channel interference to sensitive receivers.

The most recent stuff on the P3E website is from 2005 and what I'm guessing
is the most recent thing posted on Eagle's website isn't dated and says that
updates will be provided when progress is made.

I'm just curious as to what the real status/in-progress milestone/really
really rough guess as to when completion becomes a possibility is. I know
these are not quick and easy projects, but published updates every 6
months(at least) would be awesome.

Thanks Glenn. I'll add my 2 cents from my perspective as an airline pilot.
It gets annoying when people turn on or leave on all their devices. The
first clue is the buzzing in my headset from the interference with the
cellular networks. (Edge networks are the most annoying.) Then the
localizer needle starts bouncing back and forth. In decent weather, not a
big deal, but try shooting an ILS approach in bad weather with the needles
bouncing back and forth and buzzing in your headset, and you understand why
people are asked to turn their devices off during critcal phases of flight.

Still...bottom line with this shuttle picture, the flight wasn't below
10,000' feet and not in a critcal phase of flight, so I'm glad the passenger
took the photo so we can all enjoy the beauty of the launch.

Hi Ben ,

The most recent stuff on P3E comes from the AMSAT-DL Symposium and
AGM on May 14 2011 in Bochum and in a separate email I will send to you
a pdf file 4.27 MB long describing the P3E status / update with pictures and
diagrams.

In addition I can send the above file to everyone requesting it to me.

About Eagle's I don't have any information.

Ben,
I believe that more information will be available when a launch opportunity
presents itself. What is the sense of building a very expensive satellite and
have it sit on the shelf for 5 to 10 years?
If we get an opportunity then you will see activity, until then ... donate!

I'm very happy to report that my XYL (and grid-pedition driver) Cori passed
her Tech license exam at the Dayton Hamvention today. Now comes the long
wait (or so it will seem) for her callsign to appear in the FCC database
before she can get on the air.

But she'll be ready and packin' when we head out to AZ in July.

And yes, her family AMSAT membership is already on the books!

Just got back from Dayton had a very good time. The A.M.S.A.T demonstration
outside was great ! They tried for the I.S.S. but the system was not working
on board. Ten minutes later AO-27 came around and Mark N8MH made several
contacts. Now I see why I need a voice recorder . Astronaut Wheelock was
there but did not get his autograph. Martha did an excellent job with the
crowd. I got my elk antenna from A.M.S.A.T talking to Martha she said they
were selling fast. The weather was great Sunny and very warm, with a slight
breeze. The only thing bad about it was the lack of restrooms. They had all
the restrooms closed everywhere I went. Got back to Toledo....rain,chilly
and gloomy :(

BID: $ANS-142.03

Masten Space Systems and Space Florida announced contract under which Masten
will perform a series of demonstration flights of a Vertical Takeoff Vertical
Landing (VTVL) reusable suborbital launch vehicle
from Launch Complex 36 at Cape
Canaveral Air Force Station.

Under the contract, Masten will complete multiple
flights. These operations will
serve as a pathfinder to assist Space Florida in developing operational
requirements for VTVL vehicles, recommending the optimum operational scenario,
and determining the program schedule to achieve launch capability as soon as
possible.

The upcoming flights will also enable Masten to fully evaluate Florida, CCAFS,
and LC-36 as a base for the company?s flight operations group. ?We look
forward
to successfully completing our demonstration flights and better understanding
what is needed for operations in Florida,? said
David Masten. ?Space Florida and
the 45th Space Wing have been very helpful as we
continue to develop operational
concepts for Florida.?

astronaut Cady Coleman, KC5ZTH on the ISS took part in an ARISS contact. The
school partners with the Challenger Learning Center in Hammond, Indiana and

questions about life in space were asked and answered. Contact video was
streamed on the internet and representatives from three newspapers covered the
event. The Times posted an article. See:

Aloha

I just returned from over a month on the mainland where unfortunately I was
not too
engaged in SatComms. Also, I've deleted a lot of accumulated email without
paying
too much attention however I thought I noticed carrier? problems with AO-51.

Being home now, I have tried on several occasions to work 51 only to find
the uplink frequency
totaled out with some type of carrier. The same occurred this evening on the
Hawaii easterly pass. Essentially 145.910 - 145.925 MHz is totally
"S-metered" out.

Is this the same phenomena I think I noticed posted on this BBS? Any
predictions
where it is coming from?

Well, having been on not one, not two, but THREE separate flights where not
only did someone NOT turn off their phone, but they actually ANSWERED it
when it rang in flight, you'll have to excuse my skepticism...
