Hello there.
Can someone tell me when the Iss repeater will be active. My thought's are
that if Oscar 51 is sick just now wouldn't it be nice to use the repeater on
the Iss. Or is the repeater used only for School's chat's?.

Hi Jerry,
While I don't know the TNC personally, from a quick look at the specs it
should work fine at either 1200 or 9600.
Here's the catch--there really aren't any digital satellites to work :(
With the fairly quick decline of AO-51 (which is the only 9600 bird still
functional at 9600, but rarely running that mode...) I'm not sure I'd spend
a bunch of money to get ready for satellite packet activity.
There was a bit of 1200 activity with HO-68, but it has been running a
beacon only for many weeks now. If you want to copy IO-26 telemetry, you'll
need a PSK modem for that (or use MixW).
Soooo....yes, I've been running Wisp under Win7 just fine, but there really
isn't much you can do with a TNC and satellites righ now!
Who knows what the future holds for digital satellites...hopefully something!

In the past...like way past...didn't AMSAT keep a satellite "alive" by
positioning a BAUDOT RTTY loop in Canada to fire up the satellite for
the American continents, at least for declining passes?
Of course the reset code may have been much simpler then, but computers
make automatic timing and response much easier now.
The further north the better for declining passes around the world....
Of course the same could be said for ascending passes from southern
"pole" type areas.

Kev,
I believe the decision is made by the ISS crew. This website tracks the
current status and may give clues to upcoming events:
http://www.issfanclub.com/
I believe that most of the time the station works in digipeater mode. I
have been experimenting with using this over the past couple of weeks and
its really kinda neat. It only requires a single-band radio, a fixed
antenna, and a TNC. http://home.comcast.net/~k9jkm/ARISS_Packet_How_To/ has
great instructions on getting started.
AO-27 and SO-50 offer full-time FM repeaters.

You can buy a custom low pass filter for 2-meters from DCI.
Marex had DCI custom build a 2-meter filter for simular usage on Mir.
The filter passed 144.000 - 146.000, and had a notch added for 143.xxx.
The filter worked great.
It reduced most noise out side of the band and it blocked out a 50 watt
transmitter located about 10 meters away.

We are working on this right now. There are six commands that have to be
given in sequence to make this work, and for the time being, one at the
end of a pass. It's important to shut things down to keep from damaging
the batteries even further in eclipse. There may be a small chance for a
brief recovery in the fall of this year, and we don't want to endanger
that by further harm to the batteries.
In the meantime, listen to 435.150 during the afternoon passes over the
Eastern US, especially on weekends and holidays. If you hear voices, the
repeater should be available for use with a 145.880 uplink. If you don't
hear anything, don't transmit. This is IMPORTANT: There are no promises
or predictions of when we will get the chance to run the repeater. It is
on an 'as available' basis. Please don't e-mail asking when it will be
on, unless it's for a very, very special event. If I know in advance,
I'll drop a note to here or to the AMSAT twitter account. That being
said, this afternoon is looking good.
