Hi Everyone,

Thanks for the QSOs during my portable operation today. It was probably the
hardest portable operation I have done so far, as I am sure some of you
heard the plane that kept buzzing around every time I would transmit... ;-)
I can't exactly say what was causing that horrible "buzz" every time I would
transmit, but I do know that Horns Hill (where I was operating from) has
three towers with cell, amateur, police and fire repeaters on them. I could
barely hear my downlink through the buzz, and the trees really complicated
it as well. The first AO27 and AO51 passes were okay with a few QSOs made,
but we decided to just monitor the last AO27. I heard at least one station
call on the 1957z AO27 pass, but I did not feel comfortable transmitting.
Everyone just enjoyed listening - especially to that pass. Everyone enjoyed
hearing WD9EWK and KF7MYK on the west coast along with CO6CBF in Cuba and
VE3JW in Canada.

I was able to log all of the QSO from the first AO27 pass, but I do need the
1942z AO51 recording. I had to sacrifice my recorder jack for an external
speaker. If someone could email that to me I would greatly appreciate it!

If EN80 was new for anyone, let me know and I will send one of my regular
cards - no return/sase needed.

Thank you to the gracious ops today who put up with the noise!

Subject: KD8KSN Active Tomorrow (4/30) for Boy Scout Demo

Hi All,

I have been asked to do a few satellite demos for some Boy Scouts tomorrow
afternoon on Horn?s Hill, Newark Ohio. The location sits about 400-500?
above the rest of the terrain which is great for low passes, but there are
several trees to contend with. It would be great if a few people could call
so the scouts could hear a typical exchange, and it would be really great if
whoever calls could give their state as well.

Here are the passes I plan to be on:

AO27 30/1817z 50*

AO51 30/1942z 15*

Maybe...
AO27 30/1957z 19*

I will be operating with my usual call, or I might be operating using W8CBF.
Grid will still be EN80.

We will also be on HF:

Sorry I can't provide more details about the event. I believe there were a
few organizational issues. The passes and HF ops will be dependent on who
all shows up, band conditions and weather. There are supposedly 400-500
scouts that will be coming through.

If you would like a card, send me the QSO details and I will send you one -
no return necessary.

I am adding UHF and VHF preamps to my Satellite setup and I am trying to
make sure I know the right order of components...

Here is what I think is right for VHF:

FT-847 --> VHF AMP  -->  SWR Meter --> SEQUENCER --> PREAMP --> Antenna

Is that right or does the SEQUENCER go before the AMP?

For UHF, pretty straight forward I think:

FT-847 --> SWR Meter --> SEQUENCER --> PREAMP --> Antenna

Note the SSB Sequencers provide power to the SSB Preamps also, which is
why I guessed on V it went after the AMP and the SWR Meter.

Thanks for checking it out before I wire it all up.

Thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike, KB8ZGL

A sequencers provides that preamp switchover occurs before power
amplifier turn on by first removing the preamplifier control voltage and
then providing a relay closure to key the PTT line of your linear amplifier.
This insures that hot switching which could damage the preamp relay
contacts or destroy the GaAsFET does not occur.

In other words when you are receiving the antenna is connected to the
preamplifier input.

When you push the PTT to transmit first of all the antenna must be
switched to the TX line and only then after a 1/2 second delay time
the transceiver and the amplifier must go ON

Doing that no sparks of RF can occur on preamplifier and linear
amplifier relays contacts during the sequence RX to TX switching
and TX to RX switching.

The above delay time of about 1/2 second allow the antenna and
amplifier relays to switch ON and OFF in about 20 milliseconds
without RF current applied to the contacts.

Without the delay time provided by the sequencer the RF current
applied to relay contacts during closing and opening will burn
the relay contacts itself and will destroy the GaAsFET preamplifier.

http://www.ssbusa.com/seqcon.html

A description to fully understand how to build a good sequencer how it
works and how it must be connected to antenna- preamplifier- driver
and power amplifier has been published in THE ARRL HANDBOOK
for Radio Amateurs 1991 by Chip Angle N6CA Chapter 31
" TR Time-Delay Generator " pages 9 to 12

I have built it and I am using it with great results to switch the antenna
from my GaAsFET preamplifier to a 600 watt power amplifier for
1296 MHz

AO-51 Status

AMSAT News Service Bulletin 121.02
From AMSAT HQ SILVER SPRING, MD.
May 1, 2011
To All RADIO AMATEURS
BID: $ANS-121.02

For now, it looks like the PL tone management (and changes to other
settings)
has helped to keep AO-51 running and supporting normal operations. We are
now running around 475 mW of power out on 435.300 MHz.

Over the last few days, some of you on the east coast of the U.S. have
probably heard command stations downloading telemetry files on the 435.300
frequency. You can expect this to happen every few days; sometimes in the
AM, sometimes in the PM. Because it's 9600 baud packet, it sounds like a
carrier or open squelch with a "SSSSSHHHHHHHHHH" sound to it. If you
hear that sound, there isn't much use in trying to uplink; it means we're
collecting telemetry and the voice repeater is off for the moment. Wait
for the "SSSHHHHHHH" sound to go away, and you'll know the voice repeater
is active again.

The current power budget makes it very hard to run both transmitters at the
same time. Also, we are trying to keep the amount of commanding to a
minimum,
so using the single transmitter for both voice and telemetry is our current
approach. We'll see how it goes. It does mean that it eats into voice o
perations a little, but the trade off is worth it-both for the short and
long terms.

In the meantime, keeping using our old bird when it's active!
We don't want to take it for granted...

73 on behalf of the Command Team,

Mark L. Hammond [N8MH]

OSCAR-11 REPORT 27 April 2011

AMSAT News Service Bulletin 121.03
From AMSAT HQ SILVER SPRING, MD.
May 1, 2011
To All RADIO AMATEURS
BID: $ANS-121.03

OSCAR-11 REPORT 27 April 2011

This report covers the period from 02 March to 27 April 2011 .
During this time the satellite has been heard from 03 to 13 March,
24 March to 03 April, 13 April to 23 April 2011. It is expected to
switch-on again 04 May until 14 May.

Excellent signals have been reported from stations located around
the world, and good copy obtained from decoded telemetry frames.

Transmissions are controlled by the watchdog timer, which has a
20.7 day cycle time, 10.35 days on, 10,35 days off. Solar
eclipses occur during every orbit, when signals are weaker.
This indicates that there is still some capacity remaining in
the battery.

The on-board clock is now very stable. It gained 12 seconds
during during the current reporting period. This is comparable
with its accuracy when the satellite was fully operational,
when it gained approximately one minute per year. However,
there is still an accumulated loss of 309 days, which has
occurred during eclipses of the last few years.

The VHF beacon frequency is 145.826 MHz. AFSK FM ASCII Telemetry

Reception reports have been received from Horatio CX8AF,
Jerry WB5LHD and Stefano IZ1GRJ. Many thanks.

At the present time, while OSCAR-11 is operating in a predictable
way, I no longer need direct reports or files by e-mail.
However, could all listeners continue to enter their reports
on the general satellite status website
http://oscar.dcarr.org/index.php. This is a very convenient and
easy to use facility, which shows the current status of all the
amateur satellites, and is of use to everyone. Reports around the
expected times of switch-on and switch-off are of special interest,
especially for times 12:00 - 17:00 and 22:00 - 07:00 UTC,
to when the satellite is out-of-range in the UK.

A longer version of this report report is available on my
website, and new listeners to OSCAR-11 should read this for
further information. The URL is www.g3cwv.co.uk/oscar11.htm .
This page contains a links to the longer report, a short audio
clip to help you identify the satellite and a file of the last
telemetry received. The website also contains an archive of
news & telemetry data which is updated from time to time, and
details about using a soundcard or hardware demodulators for
data capture. There is also software for capturing data, and
decoding ASCII telemetry.

Hi Kevin,
SA-AMSAT has announced that SO-67 will not be on for us for a month
or more from April 18th.
The control station needs to use the transponder for other things.

Hi Folks,
hope in an help to solve my problem with my Rotator Yaesu G-5400B.
Today i was tracking the ISS, ad while i was tracking it I got The AO-51 in
AOS. As I am using the Trackbox, and i did not have under my eyes the
control box, I heard the Trackbox passing from ISS to AO-51. I gave an eye
to the control box and saw it was stuck at 35 degrees and it did not go
down to the 0 degrees to start the AOS. I have pulled out the connector
which connects the control box to the Track box and tried manually
To bring down the antennas. I've tried to press the "DOWN" switch, but they
did not move from that position.
I've tried to press the "UP" switch and noticed that the antennas moves
going up.
Then i have tried also with the "RIGHT" and "LEFT" switches of the Azimuth
and noticed also that the antennas moves in both sides.
At the end i can say that the antenna moves in all the positions except for
down.
Please anybody can tell me what is happened?
As the antennas are now stuck at 45 degrees i am afraid that the wind can
cause problems.
I Hope in an help.
Any help will be really appreciated.
Thanks in Advance
