It was great to receive Hector's very nice QSL card in the mail today!
I have started uploading my contacts to LOTW for the benefit of those that
use it. However, it is of no use to me because:
1) I am not an ARRL member so I am not eligible to apply for their awards.
The QSL cards I receive are, themselves, my awards. I have nothing against
the ARRL but all the money I have budgeted for amateur radio organizations
goes to AMSAT.
2) The internet, email, etc., are great but can't provide the thrill I get
when I open my mailbox and find a real, honest-to-goodness QSL card. Yes, I
know postage and printing costs money and if I didn't spend the money on
postage, paper, and ink, I could afford to donate more to AMSAT.
Evidently, many of you agree with me because, to date, I have mailed 423 QSL
cards and have received 304. That is a much higher percentage than
verifications I have gotten via LOTW.

Chuck, KM9U

Great! Thanks for those uploads to LOTW.

That might not be entirely correct. LOTW has only been available for
VUCC applications for 3 months, and many satellite operators have
not bothered with LOTW until that announcement. I do enjoy sending
and receiving QSL cards, and have not stopped that even though I am
also uploading QSOs to LOTW. More stations are uploading satellite
QSOs to LOTW, and now ARRL needs to start processing the VUCC
applications it has (among those, my initial satellite VUCC application).

Hi Greg,
Sorry to say this, but your analogy to "just another component"
is plain wrong. The vocoder cannot be replaced by another generic
component as far as I can ascertain. I cant' even find the algorithms
that would allow me to program a DSPIC or fpga at home in my meager lab
to perform any of the functions in the codec.
If they are available (I have searched the US patent office records and
came up with nothing of substance) please point me to the information
that I could use to produce my own version for "one off, private use,
that a competent artisan could make" from the patent office application.
Taken from your own patent office's requirements for a patent to be granted.
I'm certainly not against using modern technology in ham radio, but if
it is to be used, all aspects of the technology should be on public
display, so any one "could":
1: Understand how the technology worked
2: Attempt to build something or code something that would enable them
to communicate using the technique.
3: Advance the "art" by understanding and may be even using the latest
techniques.
I have no problems with the use of "digital" systems on the ham bands, I
use FLDIGI for receiving all sorts of signals, and have modified the
open source code (waterfall) for a totally different interest.
I could do this because the information was freely available.
On another, probably more contentious, issue that you raised you
mentioned that of operating systems! and choices.
As you so correctly pointed out most people don't care, and probably
wouldn't even know what system was giving them their internet access or
email or poetry writing ability or photo sharing or.....
Isn't ham radio a little different?
Are we not interested in the nuances of the closed source versus open
source systems that we may choose to use?
I certainly know where my interest is, and it is most certainly not in
closed source systems.
Want to know a recent reason why closed source software is a
REALLY,REALLY bad idea? Try Googling Stuxnet and then follow the leads
from there.
Really scary, if you live in a country that uses an internet based
control system...USA,GB, France, Italy, Germany,etc
Open source, or at least scrutiny would have identified the stupidity of
global passwords and non changing access passwords!
Another point that you inferred (and I could be wrong here) that we
should accept and use commercial systems (DSTAR?) because they are
available and are being pushed (hard) by one....ONE ONLY... manufacturer
, well I don't subscribe to that mindset.
I fully understand that JARL instigated this system for their own
reasons, but I fail to see why the rest of the world should be captive
to a system that has to use closed source components to function.
Which is where we started I think.
Cheers and (open source wishes!)
Don

Hi All,
I have been asked to do a few satellite demos for some Boy Scouts tomorrow
afternoon on Horn?s Hill, Newark Ohio. The location sits about 400-500?
above the rest of the terrain which is great for low passes, but there are
several trees to contend with. It would be great if a few people could call
so the scouts could hear a typical exchange, and it would be really great if
whoever calls could give their state as well.
Here are the passes I plan to be on:
AO27 30/1817z 50*
AO51 30/1942z 15*
Maybe...
AO27 30/1957z 19*
I will be operating with my usual call, or I might be operating using W8CBF.
Grid will still be EN80.
We will also be on HF:
JOTA Scout Frequencies
>
> Band
>
> 80-meter
> 3.940 MHz
>
> 40-meter
> 7.190 MHz
>
> 20-meter
> 14.290 MHz
>
> 10-meter
> 28.390 MHz
Sorry I can't provide more details about the event. I believe there were a
few organizational issues. The passes and HF ops will be dependent on who
all shows up, band conditions and weather. There are supposedly 400-500
scouts that will be coming through.
If you would like a card, send me the QSO details and I will send you one -
no return necessary.

OK, I finally received the ARROW satellite antenna. I believe I have all
necessary to make AO-51 contacts (any maybe SO-50) while I am camping in
the Motorhome. I have a Yaesu FT-470 with Speaker Mic, the Arrow antenna
and I approprated the camera tri-pod from my bride. Not going to worry
about logging until I get comfortable enough receiving.
I seem to remember someone mentioning they used the tripod top plate to
change polarity. How was that done? Do I need to poke a hole thru my New
Arrow to attach it to the tripod? Anyone out there BTDT (been there,
done that)?
Thanks

There should already be a 1/4-20 threaded hole in the Arrow boom for tripod
mounting. Most (better) camera tripod top plates can be "tipped" up from
horizontal to vertical, and that's how you change the polarity of the Arrow,
same as you would by rotating the boom if you were hand-holding it.

Hi John,
The Arrow actually come predrilled with 1/4" holes on all four sides. This
should fit all standard tripods. To switch polarization using a tripod, you
will need to have a tripod that not only enables you to move the antenna (or
camera) forward and backward (up/down) as most tripods do, but you will also
need one that pivots vertically/horizontally. Not all camera tripods do
this - it will depend on what type you have.
> Not going to worry about logging until I get
> comfortable enough receiving.
You should look into using a recorder (your phone might even have one!).
Even for the experienced handheld beam user it is a challenge to log while
doing a pass. Just set your phone or recorder near you, and then you can go
back after the pass and log. No hassle whatsoever.

Duh!! I bought mine with the duplexor installed so it had the foam
handle on the end of the boom. That's why I didn't see it. Pulled the
foam handle off and there it was, as you described. Now to pull the
screw on the tri-pod and replace it with a "just long enough"
replacement. Thanks for clearing the fog!!!

Y'all might want to listen for some /MM stations in the Gulf on the FM birds
starting today. Go easy on them, as they are new to satellite, and operating
with omnis most likely. Their route is St.Pete to Cancun, and back. I'm not
sure of their calls, so just keep an ear out.

to my earphones .. the other side goes to my digital recorder.
Works great.
