Sand it to shiny copper and lay on some paste flux.
Even then, you'll need a lot of heat. Make sure the solder flows on,
and not just globs on.
I have not built a Moxon but I have dealt with soldering heavy wire.
Let us know how they work out for you, after they're up.

"Whether the operator puts his/her beam at 15 degrees elevation, at 30

used for satellite communication and, in the vast majority of time, a fixed

Well said, Glen. After all the discussion I put my Elk up at somewhere

That was good fun, making over 200 contacts from wet grids. It was a little
frustrating that I couldn't control the ship and I was sometimes in grid
locations I didn't predict :-) I missed most of the late-night SO-50 and
early-morning AO-51 passes due to the need to sleep and I typically only had
AO-27 for about 5 minutes. The detox starts today and I am off alcohol and
red meat for a few days.
Contacts were made in: EL28, EL36, EL35, EL34, EL44, EL43, EL51, EL52,
EL62, EL60, EL54, EL55, EL45, EL46, EL47, EL37, & EL29.
Again, no QSLs are needed: just send me an email request (k5oe at amsat dot
org) with your QSO date/time (and mailing info) and I will confirm my log
and send you a QSL. Please wait until 18 April to send requests for a QSL
card and give me a few weeks to get them made and mailed out. If you want
LoTW, I am happy to oblige, but no promises on how long it will be before I
get around to updating the file(s) and you need to tell me exactly how you
coded the contact (I find very few succesful satellite QSLs using LoTW).

I will be QRV aboard the Carnival Ecstasy from late on 11-Apri-2011 till early
on 16 April-2011 (CDT). This is a family holiday (10 of us), but I will work
as many FM satellite passes as our hectic schedule allows. This trip crosses
grids between Galveston and Yucatan/Cozumel and I expect to be the most active
on 12 April and 15 April (days at sea). Per IARP rules I will be signing
HP/K5OE/MM while at sea and XE/K5OE/P while in Mexico.
No QSLs are needed: just send me an email request (k5oe at amsat dot org)
with
your QSO date/time and I???ll confirm and send a QSL. Please wait until 18
April to send requests for a QSL card.
Special thanks, again, to Allen, N5AFV, for his excellent, detailed how-to
guides (http://www.qsl.net/n5afv/cruise.html) and to the AO-51 command team
for
leaving AO-51 in mode V/U.

Here is a question about a blast from the past. Can a Kenwood TW4000 be
modified to receive from 430-440mhz to cover the satellite portion of the
band?

One small consolation is that if the ISS crew can't get it working before
tossing it into space, it could (possibly) be brought back to Earth on a
future return trip to be diagnosed and repaired on the ground.
But let's hope it is something simple to fix up on the ISS and that someone
on the crew can take a little time to fix it.
But I also understand that none of those 3 scenarios are guaranteed (easy
to fix, time to fix it, or return it to Earth).

Hi Alan
The Russian and English versions of the Roscosmos website can say different
things at different times - they address different audiences.
I couldn't find the Russian language version of the item you give dated the
16th but there was an item on the Russian language site dated April 11 the
day before the transmission. It looks like the English language text from
April 16 is a cut down version of the Russian April 11 original.

Trevor,
Yes, I checked both. Posting different versions in different languages for
different audiences is an old tradition. Unfortunately, not everybody is
aware of how, and why, this is done.
Thanks for the confirmation that the post went out. The original did not
turn up yet here.

Hi Zach, I have a Traveler but I recommend you try one before buying. It
just does not do a real good job of staying put, at least on my big Polish
head. I am looking for something with full ear cups to replace it. I like
its PTT but I have not had any luck tying it to my FT 60 and a recorder.
Patrick suggested a Rat Shack adaptor but I have not had a chance to try
that yet: a Y adaptor PN: 2102953.
I tried a Warren Gregoire headset (see QST mag for the ad) but it was toy
like and sent it back (twice)
I decided to just have the recorder in my pocket or nearby and that seems to
pick up my side of the audio for further checking. When I'm real lazy at
home, I have my TS-2000 and HRD record the pass and listen later.

Zack,
I have that headset & radio. What I did was connect the Y cord to the
speaker jack on the headset adapter (using a step up adaptor), one end plugs
into the radio, the other into the recorder. I then ran an extension from
the mic jack on the headset to the radio. Works fine. I'll send you a
picture of the set up off list.

In your checked bagage dismantle you arrow and put your elements in a 1"1/2
plastic (PVC) plumbing pipe cut to fit the longest element.
Seal both end with clear plactic bag in a way for the inspector to see
through it. You can put fishing rod section wrap around the pipe it
will propbably not trigger enough questions in the inspector mind and he can
let go your suitcase. I found the TSB search card in one of my
suitcase with the pipe one time and no question ask
For carry on follow an excellent suggestion made. Just pur your radio wires
antenna in clear zip lock bag and put them in a separate
plastic search box. They want to see understand. One female inspector told
me once when i asked her why my carry on suitcase has been
manually inspected, she told me it was not the stuff but the huge number of
items who made them searching manually!!!
Put more bag with less stock in them it helps.

Curious why NASA is delaying such a long time to hand launch the satellite
until July? I would think they would want to get it out of there and
de-clutter the ISS. Given that it appears to be dead without a solar panel
functioning, it seems like an obvious idea to me. Is there some reason why
they can't schedule this sooner?

Hi Bryan,
I am very sorry to hear about the loss of the stolen items. I always get
nervous carrying my recorder with me when it is full of recordings...but to
have it stolen along with a pc...
>From your email I am assuming that you did not log many - if any - of the
QSOs on a computer, so you do not have any way to know who you worked now.
You should check K8YSE's website - http://www.papays.com/sat/general.html -
and listen to the recordings on there to at least recover part of your lost
recordings. At least you could get most of the QSOs recorded.
Thank you for activating several of the wet grids in the Caribbean! I
dropped a card in the mail yesterday.
73,
Zack

I have some bad news to report. The MP3 recorder I used to log the QSOs on
our recent Caribbean DXpedition was stolen last night along with my beloved
MacBook Pro. Chalk it up to the misery of our times.
I do have some paper notes, so please e-mail me if you would like ay

Breaking news -- a kind soul found the recorder on the street near the
robbery. Will post details soon.
