I wonder if we'll get an extra day? Right now we are only getting 1 good
pass at our school and my kids want to listen in. Our next pass during the
school day is tomorrow morning at 11:26 utc.
Good luck all. 73

Bernhard,
Nothing down here at EM65 on the 1102 UTC pass. Good geometry, though.
Fingers crossed we will have some definite word today.

I had a good view of the ISS during the pass, though.

ISS On-Orbit Report April 11th:
http://www.nasa.gov/directorates/somd/reports/iss_reports/index.html
"Dmitri performed hardware setup and test activation of the TEKh-43
Radioskaf-B ?Kedr? microsatellite in the MRM2 Poisk module, connecting
it to an 825M3 Orlan battery and checking out its 430 MHz transmitter
from the satellite control panel. [The small satellite was named Kedr in
honor of the call sign of Yuri Gagarin. It will be activated onboard the
station tomorrow, April 12, i.e., Cosmonautics Day, when the world
celebrates the anniversaries of the first human flight into space and
the first Space Shuttle flight.(...)]"
Looks completely normal to me, that nobody heard anything.. activation
is now planned for April 12th (today).

Hi Phil,
You are just forgetting. Remember that we
needed it in a "pull" rather than "push" interface?
That makes it easy to sync everything up.
Low power mode works something like this (my memory
isn't great either)
When it is time to send a frame, the next data frame
gets created and encoded. Then the Tx is turned on and
bits start coming out. When the encoder is ready for the
next frame, we don't send anymore and the encoder is fed
fill characters. Since we know that the interleaver is still
full, a timer is started to clear the interleaver. After the
interleave is cleared, the Tx can be turned off. So, the actual
Tx ON time depends upon the size of the frame but it is
always ON at least ~30 seconds to have time to finish the
voice announcements or SSTV on the FM downlink.
This worked flawlessly in lab testing of the satellite
including tests with significant fading of the BPSK link.

I have a sketch on my web page: http://aprs.org/rotator1.html
It shows that 70% of the time LEO satellites are below 12 degrees. The good
news is that for the 30% of the time they are above say 12 degrees, they are
6 dB stronger.
You can visualize this anytime by recognizing that the radius of the earth
is about 4000 miles. And the radius of a LEO satellite is about 4400 miles.
So swing an arc on a sheet of paper (the earths surface), and then swing
another one only 10% above it (the LEO satellite) and then draw the tangent
through your station. It is amazing to see how far away the horizon is and
how much time a satellite is way out there...

The US crew was performing routine EVA battery charging yesterday in
preparation for the EVAs to be performed during the next shuttle mission. I
think that has gotten folks confused because of all the discussions on KEDR
occurring around the same time.

Let me clarify this battery charging issue for ARISSAT.
The crew has the capability to charge the battery onboard ISS. The battery
is a Russian suit battery. That means they have a certified charger on board.
The system was designed such that it's easy to remove the battery and charge
it. From what we can tell they elected to not do that.
We have very little knowledge as to what the status of ARISSat is. There has
been no word from the Russians.
If any of the ARISS or AMSAT team has word. It will be published as quickly
and as widely as we can do it.

understood. However, the station on the other end is generally going to
work stations that are the easiest to recognize and that includes what
phonetics are used. Therefore, how much time you spend in the pileup
depends on how well the DX station understands your transmissions. As for
me, I prefer not to spend a long time in a pileup!

Come up with a documented, better phonetic alphabet and get it
internationally recognized and recommended and then this discussion will go
away (or at least be changed to an argument between the old and new
standard). As long as there is no official alternative (and I don't give a
rip about how long the geographic non-documented non-standard has been
used), the internationally recognized standard is what should be used. You
can play your word games all day long on DX, but as soon as you start
working emcomm - you'd better be using the accepted standard or you're
putting people's lives at stake.
