Good recommendations, Lowell.

I use fairly high wattage tips (on an iron, easier to handle) and
switch a diode in and out for two reasons...I have two heat choices,
and when switched on "low" it keeps the tip from "burning" as
quickly, and yet "high" heat is almost immediately available...the
switch case and diode holder is made from a short length of 1/2" PVC
and two PVC caps...

I remember in the UO-14 days many late night passes, where I ended up
talking to myself for an entire pass. If I got lucky, one or two
others would show up and we'd have a ragchew for the entire pass
(with long breaks for those breaking in). The biggest problems I've
heard on the FM birds down this way are (1) long range cordless
phones, there seems to be millions of these things in SE Asia - I'm
assuming it's phones by the tempo of the speech, and (2) new
operators who don't realise they're not hearing the 70cm downlinks on
their vertical antennas, and accidentally stomp on the
uplink. Unfortunately, due to the large distances here, there's
often no one else within their simplex range to give them
pointers. I have personally elmered a couple who I did find within
simplex range, and got them on the birds successfully.

I'm not so active on the satellites these days, but that's due to
subtle lifestyle factors that brings the short passes at differing
times of day into conflict with other things that happen here, rather
than anything fundamental about the sats themselves.

One of the things I notice here is that not only is the population
density much lower, but there's none of the grid chasing down
here. We do have satellite awards, but these can be completed with a
modest amount of contacts (VK0 can be a challenge to work - it's the
only VK call area I haven't worked). I've never understood the
rationale behind increasing the pressure on an already limited
resource by encouraging grid square chasing. One would have thought
the FM birds should be the "WARC bands" of the satellite world. Keep
the grid chasing to SSB/CW, where more operators can be supported
(and maybe encourage a few to upgrade to SSB :) ).

And the only P29s I've worked on the birds have been Americans who
were working in PNG! :) Unfortunately, you weren't one of those I've worked.

Neat.

Any problems with switch isolation from the AC line? I may add your "hack" to
a standard iron.

Thanks.

Mark,

I think you are correct on that. It was SO67 that had the two week

Hi Pete and the -bb,
I can recognize your description about some of the passes - not all - here
over Europe.
K5OE also tells the story about his operating here some years ago :-)

I also support Drews action - but some may say that I am biased since I
am a member of the Operating Committee for AO-51.

I wasn't going to reply to this thread when it started because I feel
quite strongly about the subject and didn't want to say something I
would later regret. However as I feel I need to show my support for
Drew's decision, here goes.

First of all I think Drew was right to do what he did, over here in
Europe things are pretty much the same, in fact I have heard worse
than the recording posted here earlier in the week. I have experienced
the same frustration that I imagine Drew did when he had others
deliberately stomp all over him, it's not nice, especially when it's
the same stations day in and day out.

While I dont always agree with Drew's attitude to people here on -bb,
on this occasion I do support him in what he did - and appreciate both
his efforts in looking after the sat and those of the other command
stations (and of course others behind the scenes who dont always get a
mention)

There has been a lot of talk about what can't be done to rectify the
situation.. we need to have a more positive approach to this and look
at what can be done.

Our license states that it is an offence to cause interference - If it
is intentional or not, it is interference - some people have compared
it to a HF pileup, yes there is that side to it, but that doesn't mean
we cant do something about those regular users who continually make a
nuisance of themselves by stomping all over other stations, be it
deliberate or not - it is interference. If you cant make a contact on
the sat without regularly causing interference, then it's either time
to look at asking for help with your station setup and operating
practices or consider another aspect of the hobby.

The ham radio governing bodies (ARRL, RSGB etc) are perhaps in a
better position to offer assistance to contact those who don't hang
out on here or have contact details on QRZ.com etc.

For those people who choose to ignore the advise and continue to cause
interference by stomping all over users then perhaps if a few
complaints were lodged with the licensing authority it may help.

I know it won't cure the problem totally but wouldn't it help? - those
who are that way inclined will think twice before making a total
nuisance of themselves on the air, and those that choose to ignore the
thought of having their license revoked may well just get a letter
forwarded to them by their national Amsat organisation via the ARRL or
RSGB etc, or repeat offenders from the licensing authority.

To reiterate, i'm not talking about the new operators, we were all new
once. I'm talking about the regular offenders who are just plain rude
and cant ontinues like this (doubtful) then a demo on
AO-51 would most definitley be a possibility.

Remember, the use of AO-51 is a privilege, not a right. Treat it, and
it's users with the respect it/they deserve.

Ok, rant over.

Keep up the good work Drew, Mark, Gould and all the team at Amsat-NA

My experience here is that contacting people who cause problems and
pointing them in the right direction is highly likely to succeed. In
this part of the world, almost all ht passes, a
ragchew with short overs of 15 seconds or less and 5 - 10 second
breaks between overs can _help_ people find the satellite, so they
can pick the downlink our from the noise!). It should still be
online at http://vkradio.com/satiquette.html .

I have corrections to make on my previous post. It looks like there will be
two passes on SO67 only. HO68 will not be on and SO67 will be on during
passes according their schedule and it is the satellite that will be on over
the Americas.
  SO-67 AOS 1938 Local / 0338 UTC
  SO-67 AOS 2110 Local / 0510 UTC

Will have to see if we can both or only one. It all depends on the
meeting schedule.

Thanks to Mark for info on the corrections.

Hi Dave,WB6LLO

For electronic work my 25 watt soldering iron is supplied by a homebrewed
galvanically insulated transformer with primary 220 volt and secondary
12 volts with a copper foil in between the primary and secondary windings
and the copper foil is connected to the ground so that it's not necessary
to slip the tip thru a loop in a grounded line.

By the way when I solder a GaAsFET I connect to the ground all working
tools and my left wrist to prevent damages to device because of possible
static charges.

From: Adrian Engeling a special trip over to FK09 today.

I plan to be on during 1900 UTC through 2300 UTC today only!!!

I hope to get on:

AO27 at 19:06 UTC

FO-29 at 21:03 UTC

AO-51 at 21:11 UTC

Please, please, please be patient and listen, listen, listen. This makes it
easier on this operator and I can work more stations efficiently as was done
yesterday.

Fellow ops,

I was originally not planning on getting on the satellites this afternoon
but we
are coming back early from our neighbor island trip. I will try to make the
following passes:

FO-29 @ 2153UTC
AO-51 @ 22:11UTC assuming it is still on the end of March Schedule
AO-07 @ 22:31 UTC. I will have some blockage after TCA and will only make
half
of the pass.
