threat	to 70 cm operations

To our US members,

This information has been disseminated by the ARRL, AMSAT, and other amateur
related news services, but I will recap it here. A bill, HR 607, has been
introduced with the aim of expanding Public Service communications.
However, this bill uniquely proposes to transfer the 420-440 MHz band away
from its current users. Considering that most amateur satellites use these
frequencies, this would effectively end our operations if implemented. We
are working with the ARRL to make this issue public, and to urge our members
to contact their representatives.

For more details on the threat, and on how to respond effectively, see:

There is currently a brief video near the top of the page on HR 607.

http://www.arrl.org/regulatory-advocacy

The regulatory link has multiple articles, updated as needed.

Currently toward the bottom of the page is a review of the situation from
AMSAT's perspective, and a letter representing our unique concerns.

http://www.kd4pyr.net/hamletter.htm

This site will take your call, and generate a letter to your representative
with your name and address in PDF format.

I worked XE2AT this morning on AO7 at 16/1254Z when I was in grid DL40.
He told me later that not only was it a new grid, but that it was grid
#1000 for him. That's a terrific accomplishment!

Congrats Alvaro! Muy bueno!

Interesting maps.

The natural circulation is west to east so possible that some
radiation could transverse the world. During the Chernobyl accident
radiation was detected in Alaska. Probably into western US,
also. Chernobyl impacted eastern Europe and Asia more, but was
located in the Ukraine. Japan is much closer to the US.

At this point the radiation release is much less than what happened
in Chernobyl. It is more a danger in the immediate area surrounding
the plants. If the reactor container has a breach then one can only
guess the results. So far it has been intentional release of
radioactive steam resulting from heat of the reactor core and fuel
rod storage area. Unfortunately H2 gas is released in the extreme
heat as sea water was applied for cooling and that led to explosions.

Hi Zack,

Yeah, noticed the same, KD7QAF likely wasn't the correct call. My
ears hadn't fully woken up yet this morning, darn it!

Maybe it was KD7QAS I heard ... that's an IRLP node in Middleton, ID,
and the robot voice definitely announced Middleton. And "F" and "S"
do sound kinda alike.....

Hello

I am trying to research the SPOT messenger and GPS reporting system

I see that the band in use is 1610 - 1620 MHz

What satellites are they though ?

John, K8YSE, records almost all of the FM LEO passes...? it'll probably be
up on
his site within the next couple of hours.?
http://www.papays.com/sat/general.html

I will check for any Echolink or IRLP nodes for that call sign or area when I
get home.? Hopefully we can get hold of the owner & get them to move it out of
the satellite sub-band.? We had one here in the Chicago area a couple of years
ago, and got it to move pretty quickly.

Andrew,

The System gets it's position from the GPS satellites and reports it to it's
network via the Globestar Constellation. SPOT is a subsidiary of Globestar:

And there is an Echolink system (KD7QAS-R, node 410789).

What may be more interesting, after some Google searches,
is a series of references I saw where the KC0TQZ-L system
(node 367513) had been linked to the KD7QAS-R system.
On http://www.echolink.org/logins.asp now (1839 UTC), I saw
this for KC0TQZ-L:

KC0TQZ-L	Clay Cntr,KS 145.920 (1)	ON	01:27	367513

In the station description, it shows 145.920 along with the QTH
in Kansas. This may be the system that's causing the QRM on
AO-51, and the other system is just linked to KC0TQZ-L at that
time.

> QRZ.com does show A KD7QAS in Middleton.

And there is an Echolink system (KD7QAS-R, node 410789).

What may be more interesting, after some Google searches,
is a series of references I saw where the KC0TQZ-L system
(node 367513) had been linked to the KD7QAS-R system.
On http://www.echolink.org/logins.jsp now (1839 UTC), I saw
this for KC0TQZ-L:

KC0TQZ-L Clay Cntr,KS 145.920 (1) ON 01:27 367513

In the station description, it shows 145.920 along with the QTH
in Kansas. This may be the system that's causing the QRM on
AO-51, and the other system is just linked to KC0TQZ-L at that
time.

73!

(I previously had the wrong link to the Echolink page with
active logins - sorry about that)
