Jim, some of us don't know your background.

Can you tell us what you are 'driving', where abouts you are geography wise,
how far off shore and where you are going ??

Thanks, Ted K7TRK

We're progressing toward W6-land and should be there this coming
Wednesday. North America is solidly within many footprints now, and a
lot of contacts have been made. It's also surprising to me that several
of the passes I've been on have had no other signals even though the
footprint covered well into North America and I heard my downlinks quite
easily.

The seas have calmed considerably, but the winds have brought the wind
chill down into the 30s. That makes for some mighty cold passes!

Here's my planned op sked and the expected grid(s) for tomorrow, 27 Feb:

FO29 - 27/1106Z - CM15 or CM25, possibly both during the same pass

VO52 - 27/1745Z - CM25

AO27 - 27/2107Z - CM35

VO52 - 28/0305Z - Probably CM45

AO7 - 28/0324Z - Probably CM45

FO29 - 28/1013Z - CM54

These passes are during my business hours. I'll make them if I can.

AO27 - 27/2246Z - CM35 - Approximate turn on time

AO7 - 27/2343Z - CM35 - If in Mode B

FO29 - 28/0004Z - CM35

AO51 - 28/0013Z - CM35 - will miss the first few minutes to be on FO29

AO7 - 28/0130Z - CM35 - This is a likely one, but I can't be sure.

FO29 - 28/0149Z - CM35 - This is also a likely pass to make.

Here's a "maybe" pass:

VO52 - 27/1611Z - CM25 - It'll be low (4 degrees) and early here, which
is why it's a maybe...

CU on the birds!

73,

Jim, ND9M / VQ9JC

OPDX Bulletin Nr. 1000, edited by Tedd KB8NW and hosted on my
website www.papays.com/opdx.html, is reporting some good news regarding VUCC
and DXCC fees etc.:

"DXCC NEWS (Awards Processing Update). The ARRL Awards-Blog page reports
the following: "We are nearly done with processing all the 2010 DXCC
applications. At this point we are reconciling hybrid applications and
determining final disposition of applications with problems. It will
take us about one more week to finish these tasks, at which time we will
shut down the DXCC system so that the data for 2010 (Annual Listings and
Honor Roll listings) can be tabulated.
After we have the 2010 data, we will work with IT staff to incorporate
the newest DXCC entities into LoTW and call for LoTW certificate requests
from the PJ operations.
VUCC paper applications from 2010 and the first few weeks of 2011 have
been entered into the VUCC system, but not processed further. Those who
submitted those applications, and have accounts in LoTW, can see that
data inside their accounts. Link requests for VUCC have been processed
where it was possible without manual intervention. There are approximately
60 link requests that will require further work at HQ.
DXCC and VUCC fees are being evaluated. If the fees are changed (they
will not be raised), the new rates will be applied to any applications
received in 2011."

Hello, all:

Semi-active OSCAR user Bryan Green KL7CN/W6 here. I'm going on a cruise ship
in about a month leaving April 3 on Royal Caribbean's Adventure of the Seas,
cruising from San Juan to Barbados and back via a bunch of island nations.

I would love to emulate Allen N5AFV and operate maritime mobile from the
ship and from ports of call. However, I am not as knowledgeable as I would
like to be about how to go about this... properly. I am certain that I am
too late to obtain reciprocal licenses, but perhaps there are some places
where I could operate. I have read Allen N5AFV's excellent and very detailed
articles and I will attempt to obtain what I can for licenses. I also have
decent equipment for FM operations already.

Does anyone have any very recent experience, and perhaps in particular with
this cruise line? Royal Caribbean specifically calls out Amateur Radio gear
as prohibited, but I expect that with the proper permission it would be
possible...

Thank you in advance for any information! In any case I will be able to
operate in San Juan KP4 when we are not on the ship, so I'm excited about
that!

Hi Kevin,

The transponder of FO-29 is inverting and to receive correctly in USB on 70
cm you must transmit LSB in 2 meters.

Actually it's the other way around. You transmit on the uplink in LSB so
you receive the downlink in USB.

I have a couple of ham friends who wanted to take some HF gear on a
recent cruise.
They were told absolutely NO amateur radio operation was allowed on the
cruise line they had selected, I forget which one.
They also checked with several other lines, and were told the same thing.
Best thing would be to check directly with the cruise line you were
thinking of taking, as I believe they found one that would still allow it.

No, that's actually a good question. Usually, satellites follow the normal
sideband plan for the downlink, and then you have to set your uplink
depending on the satellite. So, with FO-29's downlink in the 70cm band,
you'd be listening to the downlink on USB, and transmitting on the uplink on
LSB.

If you did transmit on USB, your signal would come back down in LSB.
Nothing illegal about that, but by breaking with convention most aren't
listening that way and it would slow down making a contact.

Good luck,

Greg KO6TH

Hi Matt,

Sorry about that. When you can figure out how to change the laws of
physics, we'll go back to the original schedule :) There's nothing we can
do to make sunlight if it's not there...

Sorry it didn't work out. We'll be running L/SU in a few days' time.

Don't sell your gear...we'll run some V/S in the weeks/months/years ahead.
It is VERY labor intensive on the command team to run S-band during eclipses
(absolutely must be reprogrammed every day, with no mistakes, or the bird
shuts off and cooks what's left of the batteries!), but we'll do it some
from time to time.

Sorry for the short notice, but last night when I wrote up my op sked
for today, I overlooked a VO52 pass that will rise locally at 28/0436Z.
I'll be in the center of the band from CM45.

I'll post tomorrow's op sked later.

It means that the signal sideband is inverting upside down in the satellite.
It inverts USB to LSB and LSB to USB. It also change your frequency
polarity. If you increase your frequency at the uplink, it will get
downwards the same amount at the downlink. It is "mirroring" all signals.
And converting them to an other band at the same time. :)

For the birds (and I'm relatively new to this as well) I transmit LSB
and receive USB - am I correct in thinking this is the accepted default
or does it vary from satellite to satellite?

It depends on the transponder. The actual convention is that your
downlink is USB. If the transmpnder is inverting, then you need to
uplink LSB, if the transponder is non inverting, you need to uplink USB.
