Perfect Launch,
Congratulations to all involved and pleased to see things went OK for this
final launch of Discovery.
Good luck for the rest of the mission and a safe return.
We will miss you "Discovery " but you will always be a key player in the

How about not wanting to interfere with the antenna pattern...?
Fiberglass is very expensive... Didn't you ever overtighten the ubolts mast
clamps and see that aluminum crimp a bit???
Good suggestions on all but the owner/user will decide...

Hmmm... how about not being cheap and buy a steel or aluminum mast?
That's my solution....

Hi Zack,
Great - I think I saw that he is on his way to Brazil.
I have worked him in several grids for the last few days.
Starting here in the Baltic See and last in HM56 February 20th.
He has been very active during the travel.
Have fun.

Hi All,
Maybe this is old news, but I just worked Yuri (UT1FG) in GL69 on AO51 at
1937z. I thought he had gone back home a few weeks ago, but I guess he is
still out in the Atlantic. Does anyone have any details on where he is
going next?
Keep your ears open for him on the eastern passes, especially if you live in
New England! If he is on his way home, we probably won?t have long to work
him before he reaches Europe.
73!
Zack

Up here ten foot of gray electrical 1-1/2-inch PVC runs about $9.95
and ten foot of 1-1/4 ID schedule-40 aluminum about $15. When I am
going to mount several hundreds of dollars of antennas on a mast am I
going to risk losing them by saving $5?
My nearly $3K 2m eme array (four antennas+H-frame+144-foot of coax+
elevation bracket) are supported by 3-1/2 feet of 2-inch sched-80
steel pipe! The 16 sq-foot wind area array has withstood >65mph
winds sustained over a 30-hour period that stripped the ring gear on
the Ham-III rotator (azimuth drive). I now use Ham-IV with steel
ring gears. That array and mast have been up 11-years. You would
not do that with PVC.
The H-frame has combined aluminum and fiberglass on the vertical
masts which support the 21-foot long 2m x-yagis. PVC would not be
suitable even with wood. The fiberglass has wooden dowels inserted
in the ends to prevent crushing the fiberglass with antenna clamps. I
added short split lengthwise aluminum tubing to sheath the fiberglass
at the clamp locations.
You probably are not looking at a project this big but steel and
aluminum are not that expensive. So is there another reason to want PVC?

Here's Mine:
You sell your dream house after getting licensed because the HOA has antenna
restrictions.

It is much more effective to follow the ARRL's suggestions and send letters
directly to their lobbyist. Unless you have an inside contact with a rep's
legislative aid to send to.
Normal USPS mail can take up to two months to get screened in this "post
9/11" world.

Here is one more for the growing list
You have a couple of handhelds next to your bed, for monitoring.

Then, what's the PVC for?
I went with a closet pole (sans PVC) for my horizontal support, and it's
still going fine after something like 10 years up on the roof. Around here
(Northern California Sierra foothills), PVC degrades very quickly in the
Sun, so it's more of a liability than anything else. It's also pretty heavy
for what weather proofing or whatever else you think you're getting. You'd
be better off filling the extra diameter with more wood.
The vertical support is steel, held in a wooden tripod.

Today was a good day to stay indoors as a cold front moved through,
bringing with it strong gusty winds, much colder temps (go figure!), and
all day showers. I was able to make a few passes, but at best it was
very hard keeping the step-ladder "station" in place, holding on to the
antenna, and tuning the rigs. I missed several passes, but they were all
during the business hours when I was tied up.
By the way, I worked only KB5WIA during the VO52 pass at 25/0527Z; that
was on CW. It sounded like someone had called me on SSB on the same freq
and proceeded to work me. Hopefully it was another station he was
working, 'cuz it sure wasn't me.
Also, I'll be getting up extra early to work the FO29 pass at 25/1115Z.
I should be in BM55 at that time.
I should be able to put BM55, BM65, and BM75 into someone's logs
tomorrow.
Here's the planned sked for tomorrow, 25 Feb. Everything is contingent
on the weather.
SO50 - 25/2136Z (if I can ever turn it on!)
AO27 - 25/2205Z
AO51 - 26/0132Z
FO29 - 26/0154Z
AO7 - 26/0331Z (if in Mode B)
FO29 - 26/0340Z
VO52 - 26/0404Z
SO50 - 26/0431Z (it's coming from the States, so hopefully someone else
will turn it on!)
VO52 - 26/0537Z
The following passes are hopefuls as they're during my workday:
VO52 - 25/1845Z
SO50 - 25/1956Z
AO27 - 25/2347Z (approx turn on time)
AO51 - 25/2357Z
FO29 - 26/0012Z
I've got FO29 earmarked at 26/1201Z, but that's in the middle of my
night, so the jury will stay out on that one until tomorrow night.
