Has anybody else heard this --

http://mysite.verizon.net/vzeqe0l7/Signal_436MHz.wav
(recorded in USB mode) -
in AM mode it just sounds like a constant tone --
The signal strength is not constant - and peaks about every 10 seconds - -
A new radar perhaps?

I was running for some time yesterday (02/07/2011) and
for at least an hour today (02/08/2011) stopping around 2100Z.

I'm located FM19 - I believe it's originating south of me.

Needless to say it makes the downlinks hard to copy!

The 10 sec rotation rate nails it as an E6C Radar plane. Probably operating
off the East Coast. I have been hearing it periodically for years, and
getting ready for a satellite receive lab this week, it would have
completely spoiled the lab. So I spent over an hour on the web and on the
phone and finally got in touch with the right folks and when I said "10
seconds" they didn't need any more. That nailed it to an E6.

They are not supposed to operate on the UHF channel that overlaps the
400-420 MHz band anywhere near land, but it is unclear what the guidance is
for the band 430-450 where HAMS ARE SECONDARY.

The above is my understanding, might not be exact.

To locate it would be hard... Swinging the beam doesn't help much, because
the radar is rotating at the same time and giving all kinds of fluctuations
per second... which would mask your attempts at peaking on it.

My best guess to locate it would be to get two hams on the phone separated
by several hundred miles and to TIME the difference between the peak. That
would establish an angle from the radar between the two hams. Then both
hams compare signal strengths to an OMNI antenna (must be omni) and both
must be calibrated for equal S meter readings. The difference in peak
signal strength would get an idea of range ratio between the two stations.
That and the angle (and ignoring the mirror solution over land) would get
you a good idea where he is operating. (Maybe?)

a doppler fox hunt antenna system would get the direction also.

Was everyone on AO-51? SO-50 & AO-51 had a mutual pass at 2329 from DM33. I
tried SO-50 figuring it would be less crowded. I was right, I was the only
one on! I actually had to transmit the 74hz on tone before I could hear my
downlink. Toward the end of the pass it sounded like someone else was trying
to answer me, all I heard were a couple of short carriers, no modulation.

Was anyone else trying to work SO-50?

Bob -
Thanks for running that down.
And you are exactly right - I could not get seem to get a signal strength peak
at any compass heading.

I can't really tell, but the whois info for it makes me think the
domain was up for renewal, and when it expired a robot came
along and snatched it up, in the hopes that its owners would
pay 25+ times the renewal price for it.

When ARISSat-1 is deployed next week, confirming it will simply be "pushed"
outside the ISS, correct?

How closely will it "emulate" the orbit of the ISS? What is its intended
orbit - will it be passing the poles?

I apologize if this is covered all over the place already ...

Zach,

I use a single 2' long Elk antenna with 15 degrees fixed elevation. It
works well. See photos at: http://www.myhamshack.com/NZ5N/Pictures/.

Some suggest 20 or even 30 degrees fixed elevation but that's too much. You
want low fixed elevation so you will have good gain on sats when they are at
very low elevation (when they are furthest away and you have an opportunity
for the best available DX).

In my humble opinion, a pair of Gulf Alphas on a cross-boom with az-el
rotation would be overkill for what is up in the air now. With just the
Elk, I have worked Holland from south Florida (7400 km) via AO-7 at 1.5
degrees. The world DX record on AO-7 is 7766 km. I do have a mast-mounted
preamp, which greatly helps.

I use an old TV rotor for azimuth rotation. It cannot be controlled with
SatPC32. The program probably is able to control some types of azimuth-only
rotors, but I do not have the details. SatPC32 does automatically control
your rig's frequency to adjust for doppler, which is highly valuable on the
linear sats.

Interesting debate. I would be interested in submitting my book of qsl cards
for an award but the problem is that my operations with an Arrow were in
different countries, such as:

F/G0SFJ/P
YL/G0SFJ/P
LZ/G0SFJ/P etc etc

and probably a half-dozen or so qsl cards from each location.

Any ideas as to which award I might apply for??? bet there isn't one!

The Web site that Carlos is using to host the decoding software is giving
browsers' "security warnings" and "invalid certificates" messages.

Can "we" assist Carlos and host his wares somewhere else?

I realize that going to his site is probably all fine ... but the warnings
are enough to possible scare some away frm the project.

Or you could wait for the software to be released to the public. This
is the development site and only the brave (i.e., developers and beta

the released software is added to the ARISSat site.
