That be fighting talk........OK, shall we start the re-entry date
competition now???
For 66 pounds in a relatively small box, I think that Arissat-1 will go on
beyond 6 months by quite a bit.
My rapidly depreciating UK pound is on Launch + 324 days.

Nice to see a lot of the oldtimers come out of the woodwork!!
I'm guessing that over half of my over 6000 satellite contacts were
on AO40. And except for a very small circle near Madagascar (my
antipode), I was able to talk to the world...And I have a contact
with Durbin...
I agree with Peter, a donation to AMSAT DL is the best bet to get another
HEO..
At 89 I need some help when it comes to antenna roof work, but manage
to keep all of the shack operating full bore...
Greetings to all AMSAT operators, but a special hello to the OT's......

Peter,
Good to hear from Amsat-DL pertaining to P3-E.
I guess it is a forgone conclusion that Amsat-NA
is stalled indefinitely for any Heo. So, it
definitely appears that P3-E is our sole
remaining hope for a Heo satellite in the
heritage of AO-10, 13 and 40. I hear a "rally
cry" to step-out and be counted in support of P3-E.
Peter, hopefully you have some better launch prospects than Amsat-NA has.
Could we get it hauled up to ISS and "kicked out
the door" with orbital boost engine? I guess
that would be a huge permitting battle?

I was guessing it could be close to a year as well, it's certainly a lot
smaller than SuitSat was.
Okay I'll stake a claim on 340 days with my depreciating pounds going to
AMSAT-UK if I'm wrong.

Considering the interest in using the ISS as a launchpad for satellites and
manned space craft have increased, depending on how Arissat-1 fairs it might
be possible for other birds to piggy back a ride with a resupply to the ISS
for a launch and with P3E being the testbed for the P5A Mars mission it
might have enough leverage to go this route. I'd encourage both Peter and
the rest of AMSAT-DL to at least consider inquiring about it.
With that said I missed out on the opportunity to work on AO-40 as it died
before I became licensed, but when I found out about AO-40 I became hopeful
P3E would get launched so I could experience working a HEO for myself.

Launch Opportunity To All Balloon Groups, Or Individuals!
This will be a launch opportunity that will be for most if not all the
balloon groups a once in a lifetime opportunity!
A few people on these lists already know about this. I am now trying to
hit all the lists that I know of. If you know of anyone that may be
interested please forward this on to them.
In the spirit of cooperation between all the balloon groups, Like the
Four to Six groups did from those early days over 20 years ago now.
Where every flight that happened all the groups all joined in helping
each other to make sure the flight was successful. There were only a
dozen or so flights each YEAR! Now sometimes in one weekend, there are
more flights happening, than what would have happened for the whole year
back in those old days!
After MUCH thought, and deliberation, in the spirit of the fellow
founders of this extremely fun activity we do. I have decided to open
this flight opportunity to anyone and everyone.
Anyway, I at first thought of using this opportunity for myself to grab
and smash for all time the maximum altitude record. But then I also
thought, maybe while that is cool, but at the same time an awful waste
of this opportunity. And this will be a one time flight! I know myself
for sure could never ever even come close to doing a flight like this
again. The Balloon alone when purchased cost close to $2800.00 Yikes!
So I got to thinking of instead of simply grabbing the all time and
probably forever maximum altitude record. I thought maybe open up this
opportunity to all the groups anywhere to propose a payload to fly on it.

HI
WB9SBD plans to fly a very large balloon. He wants to reach hopefully
250,000 ft. and make the balloon a floater i.e. for it not to burst.
I thought this might be an opportunity for AMSAT. To fly a transponder or
other payload.

Hello Everyone,
Clare, I certainly do miss AO-40, along with AO-13, and AO-10 :(
Thanks for all the QSO's, & QSL's! Many friends were made via satellite!
Has anything been heard from AO-10 lately? I knew it went
into sleep mode for a long rest, but it would just show up again without
notice.
My satellite antennas are down, and I can't listen for it :(
Floyd, AO-40 was used by many during it's short life. I have at least
50 DXCC confirmed from AO-40 QSO's! I just wonder what it would have been
like,
since more DX Peditions were inclined to take along a small dish and yagi,
and be able to work DX via satellite.
Mike, I remember the AO-40 - 24 GHz QSO's from the parking lot of Dayton
Hamvention,
they were a blast! Thank You for the 10 GHz terrestrial QSO last Summer too!
I hope we can break a record on 24 GHz this summer! Please e-mail me when
the time
gets closer.
Clare, it was very nice to see the calls you mentioned in your post.
I often wonder about many of the operators that we worked.
I hope they are all well.

Hello AMSAT-BB;......I am trying to determine if the
W3HMS beacon on 2401MHZ is being use by the Satellite community
located in South/Central PA. We have
not received any reports for some time and will not continue to
support it if not needed.
It Is located in FM19qv (S/E of York PA.) It has been heard
in MD and NJ.
For those who are not familiar with it, it has been on 24/7
for >3 years and located at 1000ft on a 130ft tower. Its output is 1W
to a RHCP Lindenblad Ant. Its CW Message
contains 4 Telemetering channels and about 15 sec of solid carrier
(then it repeat).
A spread sheet decoder is available on request. The beacon is useful
for Receive system testing and propagation analyzing etc.
The 2401MHZ beacon is co-located with a 1296MHZ beacon and a 5760MHZ beacon.
The ID message and telemetering is common to all 3 beacons.
More info is available from k3vdb@xxxxx.xxx
Please Let me know if any of these beacons are useful to you!!!

I was thinking of the mode S linear transponder portion of the satellite. It
had a narrow passband and produced about 1 watt. You needed a 4-6 foot dish
for the downlink. Since a 3U cubesat can generate about 6 W of DC power with
solar panels and the largest surface for mounting antennas is 11.5" x 3.5",
this would be the kind of satellite that we could expect for an $800k launch
cost.

I hope that Amsat can make Fox the highest quality, longest lived Cubesat ever
built. But a Cubesat in high altitude orbit will be very disappointing to most
hams, only the big-gun ham stations will ever be able to work it. We need a
larger satellite with a larger power budget, high gain antennas and an
attitude control system to aim those antennas at the Earth. We need to build
and launch multiple satellites so that a single failure will not be so
devastating to the user community.
Those of us who work in or near the space program are looking under every rock
to find a flight opportunity to a high altitude orbit. Please don't sell your
AO-40 gear just yet, I think that you will need it again someday.

Logged, but not accurately perhaps. I made several contacts with you Luc via

I am in favor of any beacon in a ham band. The more beacons the merrier.
You are establishing a "presence" in a infrequently used ham band.
My estimate is that less than 10% of the users of a beacon ever report
their use of a /B.
If I had my way, I would have a /B on every hamband 900 MHz and above,
thru 240 GHz.
Just be sure to keep out of the passband of a satellite downlink or uplink.
Beacons are valuable and best considered a "labor of love".
We appreciate your /B.
